I like the other Margaret Atwood books I've read but this one... is a struggle. Life Before Man. She's introduced characters and told us about them and had them talk to each other. But I don't like the characters. They aren't at all sympathetic. And I have no idea where she's going with this. Never mind, I already started a non-fiction book : Atomic Accidents: A History of Nuclear Meltdowns and Disasters: From the Ozark Mountains to Fukushima by James Mahaffey I like it so far.

Allow me to explain: You may have noticed a book on my shelves called Porn 101. The book contains a series of U.S. Supreme Court cases concerning obscenity and pornography. What books and films were banned and why; who went to jail; arguments about the limits to freedom of speech and so on. The book is all text and much of it in legalese. No pictures. Let's keep it clean, people!

This is me green with envy . I covet your collection; but what I need are some of those bookshelves. Good bookshelves cost a lot and you have so many! Color me impressed. I think I'd build a bathroom adjacent to that library, get some 55 gallon drums of water, 100 lbs. of trail mix, and just stay there. Why would I want leave? I'd be perfectly happy there day and night until I ran out of something life sustaining. I do have a lot of sci-fi and fantasy because those are the books I started out reading. Back then I had to buy the mass market paperbacks. But since I discovered library book sales, I've replaced almost everything with hardcover editions. I've picked up many non-fiction, art, and history books since 2011. I have a book on logic (It's called "Logic") that's one of my favorites. I learned so much from that book and had fun doing it. In closing I'd like to say, "Holy papyrus and ink, Batman, that's a lot of books!"

. . If you want your writing to be taken seriously, don't marry and have kids, and above all, don't die. But if you have to die, commit suicide. They approve of that. To light a candle is to cast a shadow. It had never occurred to me before that music and thinking are so much alike. In fact you could say music is another way of thinking, or maybe thinking is another kind of music. What sane person could live in this world and not be crazy? Ursula K. Can anyone help me find out why this book is worth so much?
Litwitlou replied to Ambarking's topic in Book Buying
There is absolutely no reason that book should be worth more than a few bucks. Advertising it for a high price may just mean the seller doesn't know it's true value, or he's trying to part a fool from his money -
I can see how people wouldn't like Martin's stuff. He's crass, cruel, and he has some problems writing female characters. But when, I was hooked. I did not see that coming and I wanted to know what crazy things this author would do next. I need to put Feist on my TBR list that is already longer than Lindsay Lohan's rap sheet.

To make things worse I was speaking in an annoying voice and being a wise ass because Pete had been getting on my nerves. But if you want to see some of the books I had 6 or 7 years ago, here they are.I advise you not to look. It ain't pretty. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZoimwCV3M8

Eighteen Yellow Roses -- Bobby Darin -
The 4th book, A Feast for Crows, was published in 2005. The 5th book, A Dance with Dragons was published in 2011. We're still waiting for the 6th book, The Winds of Winter, and it's 2018. I like the series. I like fantasy when it's well written and this series is unlike most of the fantasy crap I've read. On the other hand, what the hell is up with releasing the first book in 1996 and 12 years later we're still waiting for the last two books? Does George Martin think he's William Shakespeare or James Joyce? The books are good but it's a fantasy series, not an astrophysics dissertation on the solution to Dark Energy and Dark Matter. When an author begins a series like this isn't there an implied contract with the readers that the series will be completed before its fans start dying off? I liked The Wheel of Time series but Robert Jordan died somewhere around book 10. They had to bring in Brandon Sanderson to complete it. I've learned one fundamental thing from George R.R. Martin: Never start a series of books before the last volume in the series is published.

I find it impossible not to look at other peoples' bookshelves. I must read the title of every book and will, quite rudely, ignore everyone in the room until I'm done. The attraction is irresistible; what if they have a really good book I haven't read? I just can't take that chance. Bookshelves call me like the sirens called Odysseus. Thanks for letting me see a few of yours.
