  1. Hope you feel better soon Autumn, I've done that to my leg on a metal bed frame and it hurts!

It certainly does.  I may have turned the air blue with a few choice words!

Autumn, I hope you feel better soon :flowers2:!! It sounds painful.

    Thanks.

I am quite proud of myself actually in the way that I handled that.

Sounds like you definitely did the right thing.  It's always better to be the bigger person and now the ball is in his court so to speak.  Regardless of what happens next at least you know that you have done everything you can to try and keep things civil by offering to start afresh.

  2. I have some great news to report - the Department Head came on the radio (we use walkie talkies where I work) about 12 noon to ask where I was and came over to see me and offered me the Cleaning Supervisor job.

Oh wow!  Fantastic news.  I'm so glad things have worked out for you!

Sorry I haven't been around as much over the last few weeks; things are super busy at work and by the time I get home in the evenings I barely have enough energy left to drag myself into bed let alone do anything else.  This weekend has been a bit of a nightmare too - Friday evening I inadvertently walked into my wooden (and very solid) bed frame meaning I have one hell of a bruise and a rather large lump on my left leg just below my knee.  Ouch!  Then Saturday I woke up feeling really ill so had a lazy day, only to drop a bottle of shampoo down the back of a chest of drawers which was too heavy for me to move on my own, so I did the only thing I could and shoved my arm behind it (even though there wasn't really enough room) and have subsequently scraped/bruised my entire right arm, from the elbow down.  I also somehow managed to take a chunk of skin out of one of my fingers in the process too so double ouch.  On the plus side I did manage to rescue the bottle of shampoo so silver linings and all that!  Slept terribly last night, barely got a wink of sleep, and now I am loaded with the cold.  So overall, this weekend has been a bit of a disaster!

Oh and my reading has come to a complete standstill again, but I've decided to embrace it and use the time I would normally be reading to catch up on alll my favourite TV shows!

Hope everyone else has had/is having a better weekend than mine!

  3. So, has anyone watched this yet?  Did you watch all four episodes back-to-back or are you going to pace yourself and watch them one at a time over a few days?

More to the point, without spoiling it for those of us who may have to wait a while to see them, what's it like?  Worth it?  Is the magic still there?

  4. The only thing I'd dunk them in is ketchup and salad cream, although they are nice with BBQ sauce dribbled over them too!  Failing that liberally sprinkled with salt and vinegar.

    Edited to add...

Either ketchup, or egg yolk, but not both!

Oh god, I can't believe I forgot this.  Egg (with a runny yolk) and chips with a generous helping of ketchup is one of my favourite meals!  Yum!!

  5. I knew there was a fourth book; haven't read the third yet though.

I do have to admit I'm not a huge fan of the first two books.  I can't remember exactly but I have a feeling I may have read them after I'd seen the movie and the books just didn't work for me.  Found them a bit boring if I'm honest.  I am, however, looking forward to the third movie being released on DVD as I do like the movies, even though they are a bit cheesy!

  6. The only e-reader I have ever tried is my old Kindle Keyboard (3rd generation) and it's just okay to me.  I do hate the fact the cover isn't in colour though (petty I know!).  As someone who will always pick a paperback (or hardcover for that matter) over an e-book it doesn't get used as much as it probably should which is a shame because I have over 700 books on it.  The fact that I don't use it very often doesn't stop me from buying or downloading free ebooks on to it though!!

I have been tempted to buy a Paperwhite or a different model to see if I would get on better with a newer, more up-to-date e-reader but I can't really justify buying a new one when 1) my current one still works and 2) I don't use it very often anyway.

  7. I have a LOT of books on my TBR pile that I've been putting off reading, but the ones that have probably been there the longest are what I call the classics - Jane Austen, Charlies Dickens, Emily Bronte etc.  The only classic I have ever read is Jane Eyre which I loved, but as for the rest of them I just haven't been able to pick them up for some reason.  Saying that I have picked Pride & Prejudice up a couple of times (although not for a while) but haven't got past the first few pages.  At the time maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind to be reading them, maybe I was too young, or maybe they're just not for me but I would like to read them because, you know, they're classics.  I guess a part of me feels like I'm missing out and that I should read them, again because they're classics.

Other than that I'm always buying books that people have either recommended to me or that have been hyped up online or are just bestsellers and then they sit waiting to be read for months, if not years.  I think the majority of the time it's because I'm almost fearful of reading them in case they don't live up to my expectations or in case I hate them.

One of my goals for next year is to concentrate on reading the books I already own so hopefully I'll be able to knock a few of the ones I've mentioned above off my TBR list.

  8. But Gone with the Wind is the only book I've ever finished then immediately started again. Honestly. Read the last line and flipped the book back to page one and started all over again.

I would love to read this book and I did try once years ago but I couldn't get past the first 100 pages or so (I may not even have reached that).  I can't actually remember the reasons why either, maybe the length was a bit daunting or something but I really would like to try again.  Maybe I'll try and track a copy down and give it another shot now that I'm that bit older (and wiser).

I mourn finishing all my books, unless there the kind that you can read again and again, but like the last harry potter, re-reading it and reaching the end will never feel the same as the regret I felt finishing it the first time.

Absolutely.  The Harry Potter series is and always will be one of my absolute favourite series ever and I love re-reading them every now and again.  But yes, the feelings you had first time around will never be replicated.  I've got a couple of work colleagues/friends who have never read them (although believe me I am trying to get them to do so) and I am so, so jealous that if they do read them then they get to experience it all for the first time!

The whole Shopaholics series by Sophie Kinsella. I loved them. Laughed and cried. Wish there was another addition to the series.

Hmmm.  I have mixed feelings about this series.  On the one hand I loved the first couple of books but from about Shopaholic & Sister it all got a bit meh for me.  Admittedly I haven't read the most recent ones (although I'm sure I will do at some point - if I ever find the time) but my personal feeling is it should have ended long before now.

Gone With the Wind *sigh* I just finished it for the fourth time last month.  In 4 days.

Wow!  I really will need to track down a copy and give it another try.  Maybe a trip to my local library is in order.

Honestly? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I've never mourned a book's (series') end as much as that. Nothing can compare.

Loved it... including the epilogue which I know a lot of people didn't.

  9. That's one thing that annoys me about e-books, often they don't display a page count on my Kindle and I have to go hunt for it on Amazon or using my Book Collector program (where I've filled it in at the moment I bought and catalogued the e-book). If Amazon doesn't have page information, tough luck. It's annoying.

It really annoys me too and as I think I said in another thread I'm a bit OCD about page counts so eBooks are a bit of a nightmare!

I'll be following your reading log! I wish you happy reading in the rest of 2016 and in 2017 :readingtwo::)!

    Thank you!

Enjoy your new book log! I'm looking forward to reading it :)

    Thanks Nollaig.

  10. Sometimes I read for half an hour in the morning before work if I have time and then try and fit an hour or two in in the evenings.  I'm lucky that I only work during the week so my weekends are mine so to speak and this is when I tend I do the main bulk of my reading... particularly on a Sunday!

I usually like to curl up on the sofa or read on my bed, propped up with pillows/cushions.  I don't tend to read in bed though because I find I get too warm and then my eyes begin to droop and when that happens I lose my concentration.

  12. Hello and welcome to my Book Log.

I will be keeping track of the books I read from January 2017 right through to the end of 2017.

Along with the title and author I will also be recording if they are part of a series along with the amount of pages.  Nothing fancy, just the basics.  I am also planning on writing mini reviews (consisting of a few lines only) of all the books I read, however will probably do this a couple of times a month rather than immediately after finishing a book - we'll see how it goes.  I will also be keeping a monthly & running tally of books read and overall pages read.  This is for a personal challenge I've set myself to see how long it will take me to read 1,000 books and 1,000,000 pages.  Have a feeling it might take me a while, particularly that last one!

All books read will either be in paperback or hardcover format.  E-books will not be counted as it is impossible for me to accurately record the page count for these.

  13. TV shows are still released on DVD. Pay TV subscriptions don't affect that.

    Best news EVER!  Thanks Kylie.

I think I might just wait for it to be released on DVD then - hopefully won't have too long to wait- plus it will give me the chance to rewatch the series from the very beginning.

  14. Today our clocks have gone back an hour.

I love the fact that the weekend is an hour longer, but I'm not so keen on the fact that I've been up since 5.00 am.  Still, I have wrapped the Christmas presents I've already bought so that along with me having written my Christmas cards yesterday means I am super organised this year.  Only a few more presents to buy (and wrap) and then I'm done!

  15. My to-read shelf on Goodreads has 168 books on it (at the moment) so I guess I bit more off than I can chew - but I still have the rest of my life to read all of them :D

That's not too bad.  I wish mine was only 168.  My problem is I buy books a hell of a lot quicker then I can read them so for every book I read at least 1 or 2 more get added so my TBR never gets any smaller.  Still there are worse things in life!

  16. I am going to The Works later on today to get some crafty material for Christmas cards.

I love looking round my local store although it's not particularly big.  I love all the crafty goodies and of course the 3 books for £5 is a big bonus, but the one thing I hate at this time of year is they fill up the majority of the shop with Christmas related toys, calendars, diaries etc. and remove all the good stuff.  It's so frustrating!

I had a very productive afternoon today; I sat down and wrote all my Christmas cards.

  17. Yay!  So glad my favourite won... definitely a worthy winner.  Well done Candice!

As much as I liked Andrew, to me there were other bakers who deserved to be in the final more than him.  He had a few too many disasters for my liking (over the course of the series) but always managed to scrape by somehow.  And although Jane is a good baker I didn't warm to her as much as I did some of the others.  There was just something about her I didn't quite like.

  18. There might be a forum on Amazon that you could ask in?

Decided to have a look at the online Users Guide for my version of the Kindle and it looks like the only way of doing it is by sorting items on your home screen by 'collections'.  This then only shows collections and individual items don't show up.  Tried it and it does actually work, although for some strange reason there are two books that are still showing on the home screen even though they are part of a collection.  Annoying, but I can deal with two books being listed.... much better than the 714 that were there!

    Thanks for the help!

  19. Who else is SUPER excited about new episodes of Gilmore Girls?  They've released a trailer - click here - and it really is like seeing old friends again.

I don't actually have Netflix and I think my brother cancelled his subscription in order to take out Amazon Prime but I am seriously considering taking it out just so I can see these episodes.  I know Netflix has many Netflix only shows but does anyone know if they are released on DVD too or are they exclusive to subscribers?

  20. I found it in Settings - Device Options - Personalise your Kindle - Advanced Options - Home Screen View (Display recommended content from store and enable reading lists) - I switched this option off and now as I move them to 'Read 2016' they're vanishing from the list.  :)

Janet, I don't have that setting.  I go into Settings and I have Registration, Device Name, Wi-Fi Settings, Device Info, Voice Guide, Send-to-Kindle Email, Device Password, Parental Controls, Device Time, Social Networks, Popular Highlights, Public Notes, Annotations Backup and Personal Info.  No Personalise your Kindle option.  My Kindle is an old Keyboard 3rd Generation so maybe it's not an option on my Kindle, but I could have sworn that it never used to happen.
