  1. I've got Thin air lined up as my next read - great review! I can see the similarities to Dark Matter, which I loved.
  2. NIce and bright here too, makes a change!
  3. I've just watched Spiral, a French crime series, for the first time, and really enjoyed it. Also enjoyed the first part of The Miniaturist over the holidays (still have part 2 to watch), wasn't that impressed with Little Women, and might give up on McMafia (big new thriller series with James Norton, but I haven't got the faintest idea what's going on!).
  4. Definitely out of the frying pan for poor Jane! I re-read I last year, sorry the year before last now, and had forgotten just how awful her cousin John was.
  5. I must admit I did giggle when I saw a pic of the snow in Florida - it was barely a sprinkling, but I guess still very unusual.
  6. I've just read Hotel du Lac and loved it too, glad you're enjoying it.
  7. that is so detailed! you are very dedicated to your reading!
  8. Oh wow......! I did see something on the news about a deep freeze in one of the Dakotas and remember thinking that sounded a bit unusual.
  9. So sorry to hear about your dog, it's so sad when they go. Hugs.
  10. Rained most of the night and this morning, milder but meant to get much colder at the weekend.
  11. I think the Us might have more public holidays but we do have more holiday entitlement here, where I work it 's 25 days (on top of the public hooidays) plus one extra day at Xmas, again depending on how the public holidays fall, last year it was the 27th. There does seem to be a very long gap before the next public holiday though ie Easter!
  12. Only 20 pence! That's nothing, down here it'll probably be about £30.
  13. Same here overnight, got woken up by the wind around 3.00. Still very windy when I left.
  14. thanks for posting that list, I've started my own thread although I don't expect to fill that many! I usually barely manage half of these challenges

  16. At least it's a short working week, it was horrible getting up in the dark.
  17. it's rained for most of the day here.
  18. I like your way of thinking - quality rather than quantity. Good luck and happy reading!
  19. And one more which I read over Xmas: Nigel, My Family and other Dogs by Monty Don - I hardly ever read non-fiction, but this is the lovely story of Monty Don, a famous TV gardener in the UK, and his dog Nigel, a lovely golden retriever who is the unexpected star of his dad's show, Gardeners' World (along with new recruit Nellie, another golden retriever). In the book Monty tells of all the dogs he and his family have ever had, and also gives a brief outline of his life and career, and how his current "garden", where his show is filmed, gradually evolved into all the different sections he has, and which of course, are still evolving. But it always comes back to Nigel, who is happy to pose for the camera at any opportunity! I must admit I found some of the earlier attitudes to pets a little hard to take, the family weren't cruel to their animals (they were farmers as well) but Monty's dad drowned some puppies from a large litter as he felt the mother, who was young herself, wouldn't be able to feed them all, and a beagle belonging to his mother was put down at only 5 years old as he was such a wanderer that the neighbouring farmer was always threatening to shoot him, and they felt it was cruel to keep him tied up, or confined indoors, all the time. But overall a lovely read, especially for dog lovers! 8/10
  20. Last day of my break too, back on the work treadmill tomorrow!
  21. just one brief shower, but was actually quite nice - did a nice forest walk with my walking group which was vey nice although muddy, and stopped off at the deer sanctuary and saw loads of stags, who looked at us for a while then carried on grazing.
