  1. I bring my kindle to work (as it is rather less likely to get damaged in my bag than a paperback) and in an effort to increase my reading, I am trying to read that at lunchtime rather than wasting my half hour surfing random rubbish on the internet. :D Yesterday, I started Bill Bryson's A Short History of Everything, in response to reading someone's favourable review on here. :)

  2. Well, 2 books is really good with your household of furries and humans to take care of. Well done. :D

Nooo ! I still have Raising Steam and the Shepherd`s Crown to read. I just can`t get myself in the mood to admit it`s all over. :(

Well, 2 chapters in, and I was in floods of tears. :wibbly:

  3. Stumbled upon Fresh Meat quite by accident, and am now watching the third episode :smile2:

Enjoy, you've got some cracking episodes ahead! :D

I've been watching Unforgotten, which after a slowish first episode (or maybe I wasn't paying enough attention) has got really intriguing. :)  Also watching Chewing Gum on C4, which is just bonkers.

  4. :D   I finally got a PS4 for Christmas and I just finished Uncharted 4 about ten days ago.  You're in for a treat - the story, the action, the characters, the superb voice acting - I thought it was marvellous.

Not as marvellous as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, though.  I held off getting it for ages and ages cos I didn't like the second game very much, then finally succumbed and bought it in the Black Friday sale on Steam.  I'm around 120 hours into it now and I haven't finished the main quest, let alone started the expansions, and yet I haven't been bored for one moment.  It's the best game I've ever played.

Yep, I'm really enjoying Uncharted 4 at the mo. It's been a long time since I've had such a desire to get back on the PS4 of an evening. Probably because I was previously working my way through Watch Dogs trying to finish it, and that seems relentlessly long and repetitive (and annoying at times).

The Witcher 3 I was unsure about, even though it's had such brilliant reviews. I played it for a bit a few months back whilst trying to decide what to play next and I thought the controls were rather clumsy. It could be because I'm more used to the GTA/Assassin's Creed style of play and this is more RPGey rather than action (not that I have a problem with RPGs, they are amongst my fave games of all time - Final Fantasy, Shining Force etc). Anyway, I did a few missions on Witcher 3, but I wasn't "getting it" so I put it aside to finish Watch Dogs. Though Uncharted 4 has now leapt to the top of the queue. ;)

  5. I've started reading Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones, which the lovely Frankie gave me for Christmas. I got into it straight way and have read more than 40 pages. I'll have limited time for reading in the next week or so, but I'm sure I'll be making time to read this. :)

Ah, that takes me back.  ^_^  I borrowed this and a load of other Diana Wynne Jones from the library when I was a teenager. They were brilliant at the time. :)

  6. After finally feeling headache free on Saturday, I managed to start playing one of my Christmas presents - Uncharted 4. I'm already sucked into it, though I doubt I'll be able to get through it as quickly as I would have done in the past. Gaming opportunities are few and far between these days unless my husband is out of an evening, or if we give each other a night to take over the telly ;)

  7. I didn't find the length of the books a problem - they are quite easy reads, in my opinion. The biggest problem I found, especially with the first one, is the fact that just when you've got a handle of the story and the characters; it jumps forward a hundred years or so. That was the point at which I nearly gave up.

The Passage was one of those books that I wasn't sure if I liked or not or even understood what was going on, but I kept reading on.  I was dubious about starting The Twelve because of this, but I did, and formed much the same opinion of that one. I'm quite curious to see how it all ends up though, so I might give City of MIrrors a go, especially given your glowing review. :)

  8. Watched the first one of Neil Brand's new series last night - The Sound of Musicals - all about the history of stage musicals.  Lovely hearing about the origins of shows like Show Boat, Carousel and Oklahoma!  There was also a piece about My Fair Lady and how Julie Andrews was an unknown before then, and the tough process she had to go through to prepare for the role, as well as some great archive footage.

I recorded that, I'm looking forward to watching it. :) I also recorded Show Boat and Carousel over Xmas as I've never seen them.

I'm currently watching Timeless, This is Us, Uncle and series 5 of Girls, which has just come back on NowTV.

  9. I finally finished Revolution by Russell Brand which was not the quick read I thought it'd be after a virtually reading free festive period. It had some quite interesting ideas in it. :)

Started The Unmumsy Mum by Sarah Turner which was one of my Christmas books 'from my kids'. The other one being Hurrah for Gin, another comedy parenting book. :D

  10. I was exactly like you Athena, the bigger the book, the better. Whereas now, I'm reading more 300-400 page books.

I still get the same thrill when I see a book with 800+ pages, but I often have to stop myself getting excited as my reading pace is not like it used to be. :( So if I don't want to be stuck reading the same book for months on end, I'm more likely to pass on it and read something smaller. Having said that, I didn't do too badly with the Ken Follett Century trilogy books I read last year, so it does depend a bit on mood and what else I have going on in my life. :)

  12. Happy new year all!

I've not been around for a while as for the first part of the Christmas holiday I was on holiday from work and busy with the kids and then later on I just got ill and it's been one of those Christmases to forget! I've had a headache every day since the 20th Dec and initially thought it was sinusitis. As the headaches got worse, and I got less and less functional, I saw out of hours GP on Boxing Day who diagnosed a return of my migraines and prescribed imigran. That helped at first but it was worse again the next day, so this time 111 recommended me to go to A&E where I eventually had a CT scan due to also having had a solid whack on the head from my daughter armed with a remote control in hand, that was causing me acute pain too. That came back clear thankfully but it did show up a sinus infection which is what I initially thought it was, but had been worsened by also getting migraines on top of this!

So since then I've been trying to treat myself for that with paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamine and menthol steaming but it's not been getting any better. So I eventually got antibiotics yesterday and signed off from work til next week, as the last thing I want to be doing is sitting in front of a computer screen. The headache got worse last night but is much better today which is hopefully a sign of the penicillin doing its job and clearing all the gunk out.

It's been perhaps the driest Christmas on record for me (even accounting for 2 pregnancies and breastfeeding ) - I still have an unopened 1l bottle of Baileys on the shelf  - and the least chocolate and cheese filled of them all too. Also my reading was non existent as that was too painful. Still, at least I don't have any excess xmas weight to lose!

  13. A lot of xmas specials - Last Tango in Halifax, Grantchester, Yonderland, Strictly, etc. Watched the last ep of Divorce, which was fun. Blitzed through the 10 eps of Westworld in about 5 days before it disappeared from catch-up and absolutely loved it! Started This is Us, which is pretty good so far. Still got lots to catch up with though as there was so much good stuff on the box over the festive period.

  14. I almost ordered The Omen Machine :o. Then I decided to wait until I know the series is definitely over ( `cos I`ve been caught like that before  :giggle2: ).

I know what you mean!

    I took a peek at Ellie`s books - Katie the Kitten !  :D

Yep, that's her favourite of the 4 and will get me to read it over and over. She's a girl after my own heart and loves cats. :D
