  1. Yesterday I finished All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot.  I thought it was the main Counties Challenge book for North Yorkshire but it's the alternative for those who have already read Dracula (which I haven't yet). I guess that doesn't matter though.  :)

I have now started my annual re-read of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.  One of my favourite books ever!

I have seven paper versions of it but am actually reading it on my Kindle!  :giggle2:

You've inspired me! I'm going to dig out my copy and start a new tradition!

The Glass Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

    222 pages

This sequel to The Paper Magician takes a step forward away from the Harry Potter-wannabe feel that plagued much of the first novel. The Glass Magician unfolds as a love story between Ceony and Emery. It's sweet and charming. Definitely young adult, but a fun read nonetheless.

  3. Hmm...it looks like rather lukewarm. That doesn't usually happen around here! It seems like he's written quite a few things of the same feel, so reading one might give me an idea of his style. I suppose I'll start with whatever is at the library tonight. Thanks for the insight, everyone!

  4. I'm a few chapters into The Glass Magician by Charlie M. Holmberg. It's the sequel to The Paper Magician. I was a bit worried at the beginning of the first book that it was just going to be a Potter re-hash, but it really does seem to have found its own way. Again, it seems to be another quick, enjoyable read.

  5. OMG I loved Personal!  It's the very latest one (I think it came out in August) and has been one of the best Reacher's in awhile.  I think he'll love it!

Yay! I'm so glad to hear that. He's a bit particular about his reading, so it was rather a stab in the dark.

The Paper Magician by Charlie M. Holmberg

    214 pages

So this is the first book in a series about magicians who can manipulate various materials. In this case, it tells the story of paper magician Emery Thane and his apprentice Ceony Twill and their struggle to defeat blood magician Lira.

Upon beginning this story, it rather felt as if the author was trying to write a Harry Potter-esque story for a slightly older audience. It seemed to find more of its own voice, however, as the story progressed. The development of the main character, Ceony, seemed dubious to me. She seemed much, much younger at the beginning; I had pictured her to be 15 or so as opposed to the 19 she actually was. I suppose both are still quite young, though! ;) I rather liked Emery and enjoyed learning more about him throughout the story.

I did enjoy this overall, and would be interested to see what the author (who is, by the way, a female!) does with the sequel. I liked the idea of it all quite a bit. It was a fun, easy read -- not incredibly challenging but enjoyable nonetheless.

An Old Captivity by Nevil Shute

    ©1940

    333 pages

This is the story of a Scottish pilot, Donald Ross, who is hired by wealthy Englishman Cyril Lockwood to lead an archaeological air survey mission to Greenland. Out of concern for her father, Lockwood's daughter, Alix, insists upon accompanying them on the arduous journey.

I rather enjoyed the story overall, and found Shute's deliberate writing style to be well-suited to it. As usual, he writes relatable characters of great depth. This story, however, had a bit of a tangent about reincarnation which made it the least favorite of his books so far. I was a bit tired and unfocused when I read it on Friday (probably a harbinger of my illness today) so I didn't quite get it at first, then even after I rather didn't care for the plot twist. As I said, though, I enjoyed it overall and would be happy to continue exploring Shute's writings.

Eta: Reading this story was rather like watching an old Cary Grant movie.

  8. So has anyone read anything by him? I was in the Kindle store looking up books by Jasper Fforde, and quite a few of Tom Holt's things popped up. They seem to be quirky and whimsical with a little touch of dark the way Fforde's things are. Any thoughts? I'm always looking for a new author.

  9. Well I completely blew my attempts to join the readathon. I've had a rough few days and basically spent the weekend on the sofa doing very little.

I think that happens to the best of us! Aside from finishing the end of a novel, my Sunday was a complete wash!

I hope you get well soon, Dtr :flowers2::(. Awww, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better soon! The next read-a-thon will in principle take place on 2nd, 3rd and 4th of January. I'm not sure if this is a good weekend to pick, because of New Year's happening just before. What do you all think? I'd be okay with these dates I think, since I don't plan on doing much on New Year's really, but I don't know how it is for other people?

Thanks so much for the well-wishes! I hope you get some rest, as well!

Actually, the next read-a-thon dates are great for me, too, because I'm off work still for Christmas break. :)

  10. I love the covers of this series... did you know #2 The Glass Magician just came out a month ago?  I'm sorry you are sick!

I am in the middle of a Jack Reacher Short Story, Not a Drill.

I saw that! :) Actually, my library had the second one, but not the first one. I had to wait for them to order it. The covers are what attracted me to it as well.

The sickness has actually gotten worse. I've been asleep all day. I thought it was just a bad cold, but it seems to be much more than that.

I just bought my husband a signed Jack Reacher novel for Christmas. I'm hoping it's a good one!

  11. So I just finished the last half of An Old Captivity by Nevil Shute. (pages 174-333) It's the third one of his that I've read, and I'll definitely read more. This one was my least favorite of the three, although still very enjoyable. I think the fact that I read the first half a week ago and wasn't able to read the last half until today didn't help.

I also did a story time today and read aloud a stack of children's books. Not sure how that figures in, if at all, but there it is.

I'm getting ready to start The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg. i've read the sample chapters on Kindle and am interested to see how this goes.

  12. Happy read-a-thon, everyone! My goal for today is to finish An Old Captivity by Nevil Shute. Next, I'm starting on The Paper Magician.

I stopped by the library last night and got a huge stack of books. :D It was 15 minutes before closing, so there were a lot of random picks. I did grab a couple of Marcus Sakey books because I grabbed Brilliance and liked it, so I wanted to see how his other stuff was. I also grabbed a Gabrielle Zevin for the same reason. This one is one of her adult titles; she seems to do a fair amount of YA as well. There are three more that I had seen at Barnes and Noble just in case they actually are interesting. It was quite a mad dash, but needless to say, I am well-stocked!
