  1. So very late to this party, but for what it's worth, here are my two cents:

My suggestion and recommendation is a book series with more than 300 pages per book, but I think it's one that you might really like: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde :) We have a lot of Fforde fans on here, and I think you're one of those who would most likely find delight in the literary world of Thursday Next.

I second this! (Jumping up and down waving my arms in the air) I absolutely love the Thursday Next series and couldn't recommend it more highly. Probably my favorite series.

Also, consider Neil Gaiman. Two of his books that I really liked were The Graveyard Book (336 pages) and Stardust (368 pages).

Another great recommendation. His style is rather haunting and quite unique. He has several wonderful titles to choose from, many at the length you wanted.
  2. I have a bit of a mess going for myself. I'm a quarter of the way through The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden, a little over halfway through The Shadow of the Wind, and just bought and am four or five chapters into The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. (Apparently, a prerequisite for inclusion on my current reading list is having no fewer than five words in the title.) I need to just settle down and read one thing, but I keep stumbling across great deals on great books.

Marie, I see that you're in the same boat.

  3. Gaia, one of your other posts got me to thinking about this, then I saw another post for a different read-a-thon. Now I have read-a-thorns on the brain. Is ours next weekend or the following? I thought next weekend, but then I thought I might be wrong.

  4. I've been feeling crafty lately, so I'm taking a break from reading tonight to do some sewing. I found a fabric that I love on sale for $2.50/yard and am using it to make a little spring/summer skirt. I'm winging it with no pattern, so let's see how it goes.

Right now I'm onto hand sewing the hem before I move onto gathering the skirt. I probably won't attach the waistband until tomorrow. I'm still a bit undecided as to how I want to approach that, so it's best to do it when I'm fresh, I think.

  5. I finished The Dynamite Room by Jason Hewitt that Kay bought me for Christmas. Top stuff! :D

I read that last weekend! Fantastic book, glad you enjoyed it too, Janet. :smile2:

More praise! I put it on my wishlist based on Claire's review as well. Now I'm even more excited for the U.S. release date.
  6. Ah yes, it was bound to seem all the more poorer because TSotW is so fantastic :(  I'm not happy you didn't enjoy the novel, but I'm happy that it makes TSotW seem even better :giggle2:

See, you so understand! :D I'm getting deeper and deeper into TSofTW and am loving it more with every page. There's no way the other could even come close.

I agree, it goes so much deeper than one would expect! But it's not preachy or anything. It seems like an effortless novel, and yet it manages to go so deep! :) I'm happy your review has made some members on here add the book to their wishlist and bump it up on their TBR pile :D Job well done!

Thanks! I hope everyone who reads it enjoys it. :)

  7. Would anyone be interested in doing a read along for The Giver quartet? I just finished reading the first one, but would be happy to read it again so we could all start from square one.

There has been so much positive talk about the first one, but it doesn't seem like many have read on in the series. If anyone is interested in joining in, just let me know. :)

Also, they really are easy (yet amazing, based on the first book) reads and under 200 pages, so I think fairly easy to squeeze in.

  8. Ouch, that sounds so painful, Dtr. :( Do you think a form of water exercise might be helpful? I know water offers little resistance so it's a good option for people who might find other types of exercise too painful. That said, I'm no doctor, so I don't know if it would be appropriate in your situation.

I once decided to start drinking eight glasses of water a day. The first day, at work, I drank loads of water in the morning. Then I started having to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes. LOL. It was just going straight through me, so that was the end of that! I've read articles that say you don't actually have to drink eight glasses of water because that advice takes into account the water we get from food. Although I guess more water is better than less!

I received my blender today! It arrived by courier this afternoon. I've given my kitchen a good clean and moved stuff out of the way so my blender can have pride of place. I've also had a good look over all the parts and read the instruction manual. :) It's so big and fancy! I'm going away in a couple of days, and I'll be gone for nearly 5 days, so I don't want to load up on fresh food before I go because it'll just go to waste. Then again, I don't know if I can wait until next week to try it! I might try a simple juice or smoothie with just a couple of ingredients. Can't wait to give it a spin!

Actually, aquatic therapy was part of my physical therapy regimen for a year or so following my surgery. I'd like to join a pool if I can this year.

That's interesting about the water. It makes sense, but I've never heard that before.

Congrats on the blender! I used to make the all the time with my Magic Bullet until it broke.

  9. I read a bit more of The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie today. I'll try to get in a bit more reading before bedtime. It's really good—just need to find more time to read! I have a four and a half hour train trip coming up in a few day. I can't wait...I'm planning to get a lot of reading done!

I'm so glad you're enjoying it. It'll be the perfect length for the train ride. Have a safe trip!

  10. Thanks everyone! It was one of those rare instances where I went into it with zero expectations. A friend's daughter was reading it for seventh grade Reading class and needed help reviewing for the test. I was ashamed to admit that I had never read it before, so when I saw it for $1.99 on Kindle, I had to jump at it. I'm so glad I did!
