  1. Just saw you posting this morning How was your trip? Anytime for reading? BTW- I'd LOVE to hear your views on the Scottish vote.
  2. I was just reading about this- your elections sound really complicated! Lots of parties.
  3. Here is the new trailer for Mockingjay 1. Now I really want to see it!! https://www.yahoo.com/movies/hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1-trailer-katniss-97573872427.html
  4. I thought you'd say that! Just yesterday I was contemplating a re-read! Maybe this is a sign...
  5. And the first is...
  6. I got two A- on two papers for school! One was an essay practice for our final so that was WAY exciting and the other was our first page long paragraph. Good luck! You will remember the words just fine!
  7. NO, really, don't lol Atlas Shrugged was SO much better. Just google Objectivism and your good to go Also, re: our discussion about early warnings for earthquakes, you asked if there was such a system. So far, I have learned there is one in Japan and California does have one as well. Unfortunately, ours only warns scientists less than 10 seconds before a quake- so far.
  8. I love local elections (I used to work in news radio) and all the different issues being voted on, the politics involved. Here the news is pretty much dominated by Putin and IS, our news is not dominated as much by International news. Nationally, everyone is talking about Ray Rice, an NFL player who was caught viciously beating his wife on video. He has been suspended indefinitely from the NFL. Also, a HUGE 36 year old wooden Rollercoaster burned down in Los Angeles.
  9. Reading BBC History magazine right now, an very interesting article about the world before and after the Agricultural Revolution and how Sapiens have changed the world. Very interesting. When Sapiens first inhabited Australia 50,000 years ago, 95% of the large animals living there became extinct. The article also includes how Empires transformed society. Also in this issue, Were the Wars of the Roses a Tudor invention?, Stalin's secret massacre in Poland and myths of Joan of Arc. They also always have a great book review section where I get some recommendations- like I need more of those
  10. Isn't that the one with Christian Bale? Have you read the book?
  11. ^^ Ya or the bible in 43 hours Took me about a week just to get to Psalms (I stopped there lol)
  12. I was just wondering what are some of the news issues in your area of the world. International, local, etc, As the Scottish Independence vote creeps up, it just makes me wonder, what are people talking about in your area?
  13. Wow! Ken Follett's Edge of Eternity now seems small in comparison to Song of Ice and Fire (obviously, by the comparison to that and others) and even Atlas Shrugged! The books I've read on this, seem to be spot on- like it took me about a week for Gone With the wind and a little more than a week for Atlas Shrugged. If I read 3 1/2 to 4 hours a day (which I did at that time), it works out. I also like the list- a good "should read" short list! I believe that would be if you read non- stop, all the way thorough On that note, anyone finish Ice and Fire in 98 hours?
  14. Oh I've seen the movie- loved it. The book is tough sailin' for me! It just makes me want to see the movie again!
  15. I am 1/3 of the way through Trainspotting and really want to watch the movie. Like TODAY. Should I wait til I finish the book or just indulge right now?
  16. I think this is the right place for this... I saw the movie for Gale Forman's If I Stay last night and ended up reading an interview with her after the movie on Amazon. She gave a great quote on YA: Q: This book explores some serious themes. Why is this a book for kids and not adults? GF: It’s a book for kids precisely because it explores serious themes. Teenagers are grappling with choices about life and love as much as adults, so why shouldn’t their reading reflect that? I don’t set out to write YA. It just seems like I’m drawn to stories about young people. That said, I think If I Stay is for adults, too. I love the idea of teens reading this book and then handing it off to their parents.
  17. Ugh- I did the same thing! My drop off came in July though, I'm still trying to get out of It, I'm doing better. I think I need a few "easy" reads next, most of those books Juy- now have been a tad hard- like Fountainhead, Elie Wiesel's memoirs, etc.
  18. I can't tell you how much I freak out over this happening to me. I never ever leave any liquids next to my computer or (OMG) Kindle. I don't even leave them near anything that can be knocked over. I worked at a radio station for many years, one time, a stupid DJ opened a bottle of Champaign over the soundboard and it went everywhere (obviously). Ruined the whole brand new $10,000 board. It takes awhile to get that "homey" feeling in a new place- once, I moved to an apartment that was exactly the opposite of my previous one! I'd be in the kitchen, trying to find the bathroom
  19. That is great news, Devi!
  20. Great review- especially about the translations and all that- I didn't know there were so few fantasy or science fiction Dutch writers. I'm glad you liked it- it sounds a bit complicated!
  21. A belated welcome!
  22. I haven't talked to Weave about Atwood, but we do get to the same types of books. I'm glad to have found a fan- I liked The Handmaids Tale ok, but I've been searching for that one book for me from her that will be my Ah Ha! moment... if that makes sense. It may be Stone Mattress. I love short stories. Would you recommend Oryx and Crake then?
  23. Yes, at this point even someone who hasn't read The Dinner wants to read reviews of it (I think I am the only one!)
  24. So good! No, I haven't read the book.
