Sky have launched a Sky Movies 007 channel to coincide with the 50th anniversary of James Bond films, and are showing all the newly restored films in glorious HD, so it's been on the television most of the weekend while we've been doing other things. I've caught bits of The Spy Who Loved Me, Live and Let Die, Casino Royale, From Russia With Love, Moonraker, Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The Golden Gun as well as seeing a documentary about Q which was being made with Desmond Llewelyn just before he died, and some on set footage from Skyfall!

Anatomy of a Murder. Forget 'It's A Wonderful Life'.....Anatomy of a Murder was James Stewart's best film by far (well, that's just my humble opinion!) Love it - except for the ending!!!! What a let-down. Still the 2 and a half hours that went before it made it definitely worth the watch :)

Dangerous Liaisons (OH is working in Edinburgh this week, so have been catching up on a few films). Brilliant - Glenn Close is an amazing actress, and John Malkovich is a far sexier man than such a dastardly character (in this film) deserves to be.

Was that the ghost one? I thought it was OK

Puberty Blues - an iconic Australian movie from the 1970s (based on a novel by Kathy Lette of the same name). It's about two Sydney schoolgirls who strive to get into the cool kids' group but then realise it's not all it's cracked up to be. It's set in a time when 'girls don't surf' - they sit on the beach, watch the guys surf and buy them Chiko rolls and meat pies. There's a brilliant bit at the end...

when the girls buy a surfboard and go surfing, with all the guys and girls jeering at them from the beach. Their jeers eventually turn into respect though.

Apparently it's a pretty accurate portrayal of the time. I'm glad I didn't go to school with pigs like that. The guys were awful! The book was just turned into a TV series here as well, which was brilliantly done.

Watched a few over the weekend....

The Hot Rock (aka How To Steal A Diamond in Four Uneasy Lessons), from 1972 - with Robert Redford - who is so pretty in this that it almost hurts to look at him! - and George Segal. Very funny heist movie; a hidden gem really. I can't help wondering why this is not more famous. Definitely worth checking out.

Accidental Hero (aka Hero) from 1992 - with Dustin Hoffman, Andy Garcia and Geena Davis. Absolutely brilliant - Dustin Hoffman is a small time crook, who saves the lives of a load of passengers from a plane crash - but then Andy Garcia pops up to take the credit. Really really enjoyed this film.

The Big Lebowski from 1998 - with Jeff Bridges and John Goodman. One of my all time favourite films - I've watched it several times, and always find something new in it every time. OH loves it too, so we popped it on on Saturday night :)

That Touch of Mink from 1962 - Cary Grant and Doris Day. Funny, but very dated romcom.

^ Raven 1971 is better.

Whisper of the Heart

I do like this film, but I can't really tell you why as on paper it's everything I usually try and avoid. I think it is also a film that could only be set in Japan.

The wonderful "Killing Them Softly"

I watched 28 Weeks Later last night - not usually my cup of tea by a long shot, but it was reasonably good.

Currently watching Whip It, which I never get sick of.

Is that a film about dogs in the North of England?

(hey, at least it wasn't a bondage joke . . . ).

Anna Karenina - I don't usually like films with Keira Knightley in them, but I loved this and will be going to see it again. Very stylised and unusual, but I want it on DVD too as there are some parts I want to be able to watch again and again.

I've just seen taken 2, It's like the third Bourne film, Split into two parts. Shame it was a 12A as a lot of the fight scenes were spoiled. It was alright though.

OK time to catch up on a few film reviews.

Snow White And The Huntsman.

I had two problems with this film .

1). Snow White was supposed to be really beautiful , the fairest one of all. The trouble is, Kristen Stewart just....isn't. I don't know why Charlize Theron even bothered asking the mirror if it is going to tell obvious whoppers like that.

2) It is supposed to be that Snow white wins because of her inner beauty, purity, intrinsic goodness or something like that...

then she ends up leading an army and killing the witch queen in a dirty knife fight

.

I think the storywriters really lost the plot....there is really no story here at all and no chemistry between the lead characters.

I saw this at somebodies house about a year ago on a pirate DVD. I have been waiting ever since for it to come out and was frustrated because nobody seemed to know anything about it, it has had a very low key release.

I found it a really excellent taut nerve wracking thriller with an excellent cast.

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie .. and I was very disappointed in it. Wish you could ask for your money back like in restaurants (though I never have there either :D) It wasn't a patch on Nightmare Before Xmas.
