poppy Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Water For Elephants. It wasn't bad, but I enjoyed the book way more. Didn't feel either Robert Pattinson or Reese Witherspoon would have been my first choices to act the parts, but Christoph Waltz was excellent as August. The book set the mood of a struggling circus during the depression, the cut-throat tactics and the eccentric characters involved, far more powerfully.
Nika Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Margin Call - good, intelligent entertainment. Plus Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and Zachary Quinto - what a pleasurable experience ;-)
chesilbeach Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 We watched a documentary film about the film company Polygram this evening called 100 Films and a Funeral (a reference to one of its most successful films, Four Weddings and a Funeral) and it was a fascinating look at the development and demise of the company, and at the business of making and distributing films.
Karsa Orlong Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I started watching Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and it sent me to sleep (as did the book! ), so turned it off, planning to go to bed, and somehow started watching Red Eye on BBC1. Rubbish film, but Rachel McAdams kept me awake
vodkafan Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Yesterday I watched Mirrors with Keifer Sutherland. Was not up to much, rather silly.
Ruth Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Stalag 17, wIth the late, great, gorgeous WIllIam Holden. TerrIfic fIlm; I'd rate It 10 out of 10, easIly. It was dIrected by BIlly WIlder, and I am fast comIng to the conclusIon that WIlder dId not ever dIrect a bad fIlm. Stalag 17 Is not even my favourIte WIlder/Holden collaboratIon - that would certaInly be Sunset Boulevard - but It Is brIllIant. Holden won a much deserved Oscar for hIs role.
Peacefield Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I remember watching Stalag 17 when I was a kid, Ruth, with my dad. He loved it but I can't remember what I thought so I need to watch it again I saw Magic Mike yesterday . It was funny, and fit the 'fluffy' bill perfectly. One drawback was not seeing the guy in my avatar onscreen enough!
Chrissy Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 I watched 'The World's Fastest Indian', a New Zealand film about an older man's attempts to race his 1920 Indian motorcycle at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah USA. This sounds like a whole lot of nothing, but the central character of Burt Munro alongside the people and places he encounters en route make the film wonderful. This is a terrific film, with Anthony Hopkins acting his socks off with great support from his fellow cast members. It is a 100% character driven film, and I defy anyone to not be uplifted by it. It was recommended to me by an acquaintance, and all I can do is recommend it on.
Nika Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 The World's Fastest Indian is indeed an amazing film. It was the first time I really appreciated Anthony Hopkins. I watched it few years back when I was down and it instantly made me feel better and believe that it is never too late to follow your dreams.... Water For Elephants. The book was much better. I did not like the film much and Pattinson was just a wrong choice. His Polish was terrible too Off to watch Vicar of Dibley now. I need my daily dose of some British humour....
ian Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Tried to watch Public Enemies the other night. My thought process was "Johnny Depp & Christain Bale: must be good". Wrong! After a hour of shaky camera work and mumbling dialogue I gave up and went to bed
Nika Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 The ending to this was part good, part disappointing. The book is very good and different from the film. Much better too I must say :-)
chesilbeach Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Watched Knight and Day again last night. Utterly ridiculous but suited my mood last night so was happy to watch it again
dex Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 If you can get over the nods and winks to the first film, then the amazing spiderman is quite good. A few too many famous faces jumping on the bandwagon though.
chesilbeach Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - seen it before, but enjoyable anyway, and I love Simon Pegg in it!
Peacefield Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Ooooooh Simon! I saw Moonrise Kingdom yesterday and loved it. Honestly, if you guys will see only one film this year, make it Moonrise Kingdom. I've long said I'm a huge fan of Wes Anderson and that his first film, Bottle Rocket remains my favorite of his, but Moonrise Kingdom is the first of his that's come close to knocking Bottle Rocket out of the first place spot .
Weave Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Troll Hunter ~ it was incredibly awesome! a definite favourite
pontalba Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 We're watching the BBC Wallander films now, last night we watched The Man Who Smiled. I like the BBC version, but have to say the Swedish version is mo'bettah, IMO. One thing in favor of the BBC ones is that they are based on Mankell's books, the Swedish ones don't seem to be, but are true to the character of Wallander.
vodkafan Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Troll Hunter ~ it was incredibly awesome! a definite favourite I agree Paula this was hilarious!
vodkafan Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I just saw Machete. It had everything, crooked politicians, (Robert De Niro) Racist vigilantes (Don Johnson), Machete weilding disgraced ex-cop (Danny Trejo), beautiful Federal agent (Jessica Alba), Mexican underground people smuggler (Michelle Rodriguez) Mexican drug lord (Steven Seagal) Gun toting priest (Cheech Marin) and a general bad guy (Jeff Fahey) with Lindsay Lohan as his delinquent daughter. Wait did I miss anybody out?
Weave Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 (edited) I agree Paula this was hilarious! It was, I just loved Hans total lack of job satisfaction, like he worked in an office or something instead of hunting trolls Edited July 9, 2012 by Weave
Timstar Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I saw Moonrise Kingdom yesterday and loved it. I really wanna see that, glad it is good! Darjeeling Limited is my favourite Anderson film.
