PianomanWest Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Hi. I am looking for a compelling book/story fiction or non-fiction that takes place in East Germany between 1961 and 1989, during the life of the Berlin Wall. Looking for good characters and an intriguing plot. Has anyone read anything that may fit this? Thanks. Regards, PianomanWest Quote
Chrissy Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 The only one that springs to mond, which only touches your request is 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold' by John Le Carre. Quote
Janet Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 A quick Google finds these: The Book Jumper by Peter Schneider Berlin Game by Len Deighton And there are several listed in this article Quote
Lumo Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Yes, Berlin Game was the first one that came to my mind too. Quote
Ruth Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Marcia Preston wrote a book called West Of The Wall, which is on my tbr, but I haven't read it yet. If you fancy trying non fiction, Peter Millar's '1989' is a great book all about his life in the Eastern Bloc, and the night the wall came down (he was in Checkpoint Charlie at the time). Quote
kurtz Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 The best non-fiction book I ever read about East Germany was Man Without a Face, which was the biography of Markus Wolf, who was head of the foreign intelligence branch of Stasi during Cold War. The fictional one I enjoyed most was Rift Zone, by Raelynn Hillhouse, who herself supposedly smuggled antiques and other stuff over border from East to West Germany. Quote
