Your favourite read of the year?

I had several 10/10s:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K Jerome

The Earth Hums in B Flat by Mari Strachan

Mr Rosenblum's List - or Friendly Guidance for the Aspiring Englishman by Natasha Solomons

Once by Morris Gleitzman

The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson

Macbeth by William Shakespeare

Your favourite author of the year?

Stieg Larsson. I will (hopefully!) finish The Girl Who Played With Fire today, which I'm also really enjoying - I'm looking forward to part 3 in 2011.

Your most read author of the year?

George Orwell and Shakespeare - 2 books for each

Your favourite book cover of the year?

This is tricky as there have been several, so I'm going to cheat and pick two!

For prettiness:

008-2010-Feb-10-TheCrowfieldCurse.jpg

But for sheer tactility of the cover (even though the picture isn't pretty) - I couldn't stop rubbing it!

027-2010-Jun-09-TheQuickeningMaze.jpg

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

Sadly The Children's Book by A S Byatt. :( I really wanted to like this, and the cover was very pretty (!) but I just couldn't get into it.

The book that most disappointed you?

I was lucky not to have any absolute turkeys this year, but I was rather disappointed with the non-fiction Dear Me: A Letter to my Sixteen-Year-Old Self by Various Contributors - a brilliant premise, but a bit of a let-down.

The funniest book you read this year?

Join Me by Danny Wallace - I haven't read all of his books yet, but he never disappoints!

Your favourite literary character this year?

Pooter in Diary of a Nobody!

Your favourite children's book this year?

The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson - a bit of a twee ending, but charming.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

The Lady in the Van by Alan Bennett

Your favourite biography this year?

It's Not What You Think by Chris Evans - I'm looking forward to the paperback of part 2

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

N/A

Your favourite poetry collection this year?

A Poem for the Day One - although I haven't managed to read a poem every day - perhaps that should be a resolution for 2011!

Your favourite illustrated book of the year?

I've already chosen this book in another category, but it would have to be The Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith as they so suit the story!

Your favourite read of the year?

I have to cheat and nominate two:

The Hand That First Held Mine - Maggie O'Farrell

The Tenderness of Wolves - Stef Penney

Your favourite author of the year?

Probably David Liss - he was a new author for me, and I was quite impressed.

Your most read author of the year?

Stephenie Meyer, as I finally read the Twilight series.

Your favourite book cover of the year?

Pass

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

Brick Lane by Monica Ali.

The book that most disappointed you?

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire.

The funniest book you read this year?

Then We Came To The End by Joshua Ferris

Your favourite literary character this year?

Difficult, but I'd say Ethel Williams from Fall of Giants, by Ken Follett.

Your favourite children's book this year?

I only read one children's book this year - the first in the Famous Five series.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

I'm quite shocked to discover I've only read one non-fiction this year, and I'm still part way through it (and I've been reading it since June  ) It's At Home by Bill Bryson. A very good read, so I don't know why it's taking me so long. :irked:

Your favourite biography this year?

Haven't read any.

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

None - I can't get into short stories.

Your favourite poetry collection this year?

None, poetry doesn't do anything for me.

Your favourite illustrated book of the year?

The only one I have read is The Little Prince.

Now 2010 is finally over (and my chance for squeezing in another quick read has gone!), here are my choices:

Your favourite read of the year?

The Gum Thief, by Douglas Coupland

or

The Death of Grass, by John Christopher

I can't decide between the two. Two very different books; the first full of sharp, insightful observation (and one of the most bizarre books-within-a-book I have ever read); the second a dark and grim tale of the collapse of civilisation. Both very well written and both very enjoyable.

Your favourite author of the year?

Whilst I have enjoyed books written by other authors more, I'd have to go for Haruki Murakami for Wild Sheep Chase, a superbly crafted book (possibly my favourite of his to date).

Your most read author of the year?

Douglas Coupland

(Purely by dint of my having read two of his books this year!)

Your favourite book cover of the year?

chicksdigtimelords.jpg

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

There's nothing I've have got more than a few pages into before abandoning, and they were abandoned because they were simply the wrong book picked up at the wrong time rather than the book in question being poor.

The book that most disappointed you?

Black Sun Rising, by Celia Friedman

But I've raked over that ground a few times already!

The funniest book you read this year?

The Gum Thief, by Douglas Coupland (though Generation X, by the same author, and M*A*S*H, by Richard Hooker both give it a run for it's money).

Your favourite literary character this year?

Emma Morley (One Day). One of the best characters I've ever read; Ordinary and flawed, but so vividly written I felt like I knew her. There's no way I'll be watching the film adaptation of this, there is simply no way they will be able to meet my expectations for the character (Anne Hathaway certainly isn't it!).

Your favourite children's book this year?

The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien

The book that restored my faith in fantasy novels! Notable for useless, ungrateful Dwarves, a plucky hobbit and epic dragon fail.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

Doctor Who: The Writers Tale: The Final Chapter, by Russell T. Davis and Benjamin Cook

An interesting insight into the last months of Russell T. Davis's tenure as the head writer on Doctor Who (and for those wondering, yes, he was making it up as he went along).

Your favourite biography this year?

The To-Do List, by Mike Gayle.

Not a biography in the traditional sense, but probably the closest I've come to reading one this year. It was interesting to read about Mike Gayle's own life (even though this was a brief glimpse into it) as it gave a number of insights into his novels.

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

Pavane, by Keith Roberts

Technically, this is classed as a novel, but it is really a collection of short stories spanning a number of years in an alternate history of the UK.

Alice Sebold - The Lovely Bones

Your favourite read of the year?

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Your favourite author of the year?

Yeesh - probably Suzanne Collins as I really enjoyed her Hunger Games series.

Your most read author of the year?

Richelle Mead

Your favourite book cover of the year?

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. I didn't think much of the book but the cover appealed.

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. I tried really hard with this but in the end decided it was absolute rubbish.

The book that most disappointed you?

Atonement by Ian McEwan.

Ooh and I need to have a second. The Towers of Midnight by Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan - simply for the massive continuity errors that the editors should be ashamed of themselves for missing. Despicable in an otherwise great series.

The funniest book you read this year?

Probably the succubus series by Richelle Mead - let's face it, they are easy-reading slush and that's why I like 'em.

Your favourite literary character this year?

Winston Smith from 1984.

Your favourite children's book this year?

Seeing as my favourite book of the year is a children's book I will choose that and add a second, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Your favourite read of the year?

I'll count this as new reads in 2010, rather than re-reads. Even then there are too many. It's between The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay, and Lustrum by Robert Harris. Or Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantell. Damn, this is difficult. Call it a tie.

Your favourite author of the year?

I'll count this as authors that were new to me in 2010. So it's Jo Nesbo, CJ Sansom or George RR Martin. Again, it's a tie.

Your most read author of the year?

Steven Erikson, I think, as I've been gradually re-reading his Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

Your favourite book cover of the year?

The Wind-Up Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

Only one - The King Beyond The Gate by David Gemmell. No reason other than I was unwell and lost touch with it.

The book that most disappointed you?

Judas Unchained by Peter F Hamilton. I'm a big Hamilton fan but this was the second book in a two-book 'saga' and it was over-blown and padded beyond belief. He could have stripped the extraneous stuff out and told the whole story in one book. Shame.

The funniest book you read this year?

Um, I don't really read funny books. Say Cross Country by James Patterson, just because it was so hilariously bad.

Your favourite literary character this year?

There are three that immediately spring to mind: Fermin Romero de Torres in The Shadow of the Wind, and Tyrion Lannister and Arya Stark in George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. All wonderful characters that jumped off the page in my mind.

Your favourite children's book this year?

I think Eon: Rise of the Dragoneye by Alison Goodman was the only one I read.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

Forensics For Dummies. It was research for a story I'm writing. I'm not planning to murder anyone. Honest.

Your favourite biography this year?

Didn't read any.

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

I read some of Robert E Howard's Solomon Kane stories, which I enjoyed.

Your favourite poetry collection this year?

Didn't read any.

Your favourite illustrated book of the year?

Didn't read any.

 That made me laugh! If there's a list of book you don't want "dummies" reading, this one must surely be right near the top :giggle2:

Your favourite read of the year?

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanne Clarke. It took me about 6 months to get through it, but I loved every page and thought it was an absolutely fantastic read.

Your favourite author of the year?

Favourite book was a toss up between the above and this: Vlad by C. C. Humphreys. I'm picking Humphreys for this as I adored his book, he was immensely kind about doing an interview for the forum when I contacted him and I plan to read much more of his work.

Your most read author of the year?

Lev Grossman - I read two by him and only one by everyone else. I also absolutely loved both books, and The Magicians was another contender for favourite book.

Your favourite book cover of the year?

Oooh, PROBABLY The House At Riverton by Kate Morton. It's just a picture of a garden/gate, but I love books with those covers. That's actually what caught my eye about it in the charity shop - same way I found 'The Line Of Beauty' by Alan Hollinghurst, the cover of which I also love but did not read this year! Galileo's Dream was a close second, with a gorgeous grey space-y cover with some gold instruments on it.

The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, then the one you read the least of)?

I abandoned Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare after a few chapters because I just wasn't feeling it. I did however pay good money for the thing so I'm going to attempt it again this year.

The book that most disappointed you?

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. I was so sure I'd love his writing, based both on what I had heard about his material and the actual people who recommended him to me - they're usually bang on. But I just hated every page of it. I read the whole thing just to be sure, but I'm afraid he eludes me.

The funniest book you read this year?

I didn't read anything I could honestly class as funny last year. I'll have to make sure I do this year!

Your favourite literary character this year?

That's tough. Mr. Norrell comes close, but I think I have to go with Vlad Dracula simply because of the range of emotions he inspired in me and his being portrayed as a well rounded man and celebrated leader, not just a cold blooded psychotic killer.

Your favourite children's book this year?

Tag by Michael Coleman. About a couple of kids who get caught up in graffiti gangs and end up in serious trouble. I just spotted it for 2 quid in the charity shop and said why not - but it turned out to be one of the best books I read in 2010.

Your favourite non-fiction book this year?

Oscar Wilde's Collected Letters. Very interesting to see the contrast between the man in formal poetic writing and the man being honest in letters he never expected the world to see.

Your favourite collection of short stories this year?

Again, Oscar Wilde. I had never read a lot of his short stories and I loved them!

Your favourite illustrated book of the year?

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. The illustrations were few and far between, but lovely all the same.
