Well, I finally ordered the latest season/series of Sherlock.  We watched the first episode the other night, and I have to say I was disappointed in it.  I absolutely hate the prankishness of this Holmes, and consider it so far out of character as to be a killer of the series for me.

I haven't read this thread on account of spoilers, so can anyone tell me if it improves, or does this nonsense continue?  I really, really wanted to love this, but just can't.

Much to my consternation, husband fell sound asleep during the showing, several times.  He later said he found it boring, with no plot developments happening.  I have to agree with him.  The leaps were too much, no filler, IMO.

I watched the first episode (of season one) yesterday and I quite enjoyed it. I haven't read any of the original books (on my TBR), so I couldn't say anything of how faithful an adaptation it is, to the original works. But I liked what I saw, it was funny in places and also tense. I thought the two main actors were very talented. I look forward to watch more of the series.

I'm sorry you didn't like it, Kate :(.

We finished watching series two and three. I have to say, overall I liked the first two series better than the third. There were less deductions and there was less focus on cases.

Below some spoilery thoughts on series three (so don't read it if you haven't seen it and don't want to be spoiled).

I thought the whole thing with Sherlock's death was a bit weird and didn't seem to make much sense. So many people knew about it yet John didn't, why keep him in the dark but not the other 30 people involved? I did like seeing the various theories but didn't think the final one made the most sense.

I liked Sherlock's speech at the wedding and thought the second episode had quite a few funny moments.

I thought Magnussen was very creepy.

I found it a shame it was never explained how he got to know the secrets of the people which bothered me. I liked the revelation of Mary and her backstory but thought what happened with Magnussen wasn't as thrilling as it could've perhaps been, there was less focus on him.

The whole thing where Sherlock gets shot, I enjoyed seeing the mindpalace but it took a little bit too long in my opinion.

I'm very curious what will happen with Moriarty.

Overall I thought series three was less memorable and had less memorable cases in it. I'm still interested to see series four though, when it's out and released on DVD (we can't get the BBC in this house because we don't have cable nor the proper satellite connection).

I still haven't finished series 3. I have seen episodes 1 and 2, but it is so hard to find time to watch one hour and a half block of TV. I'm hoping to finish watching the last episode at some point...

So far I've thought that there has been less crime solving in the last series than the other two. It is more about their personal lives and advancing the plot. I felt like series 1 included so much more crimes and Sherlock solving those crimes.

Can't wait! Apparently this special is all we'll be getting for a while. They haven't even started writing season 4 yet. :(

Well, I'd be quite happy for Moffat to give up Doctor Who and concentrate on Sherlock

I admire your courage for saying that on a forum with many DW fans.  :friends3::giggle2:

But yes, there are hundreds of old Doctor Who episodes for fans to watch. Sherlock should be the priority now.

I'm looking forward to this special, because of the period setting, but I'm not that interested in a new series as I didn't think the last one was that great.

I was curious about that.. it did look like a period setting to me but I don't know anything about the special other than the trailer. I would agree with you Raven, I enjoyed the first two seasons more than the third one. I might still want to watch the fourth one though if people say it's better than series three.

I'd be happy for Moffat to give up on Doctor Who because he's been running it into the ground since he got it. I'd like him to pass it on to someone else, and go focus on Sherlock.

Can't believe we've to wait so long for Season 4. :(

Doctor Who isn't holding up new Sherlock, I believe that is down to the availability of Cumberbatch and Freemen. Also, production and writing duties on Sherlock are split between Moffat and Mark Gatiss so his input is far less demanding than it is on Who.

And for the record, Doctor Who has seen a large increase in viewers worldwide since Moffat took up the reins. From a commercial point of view the show is more successful now than it has ever been (personal taste over episode content is another issue!).

His first season, Smith's first season, was brilliant. Nothing since then has even come close to what it was like prior to that. People also watch Big Brother, I wouldn't trust large scale viewership for estimation of quality. Maybe Sherlock doesn't need Moffat either, I don't know. All I know is Doctor Who was better before he took over. Whatever the reason, they should do something.

I'm quite fond of most of Matt Smith's stuff, but I must admit I'm still not sold on Capaldi's Doctor (I need to watch the last series through again, though; I've been waiting for it to come down in price on Blu-ray!).

I think Moffat is one of the most inventive writers Who has ever had, but I'll concede that he doesn't always get it right.  I also think that Moffat should probably be moving on before too long, because I don't believe it is healthy for any long running series to stick with the same person for too long (fresh ideas, and all that, although I wouldn't have said Moffat has run out of them just yet).

Apparently the Sherlock Xmas special will be broadcast on New Years Day.

I am very excited about this.

Apparently it will also be simultaneously broadcast in various cinemas around the country. Essentially, people can go and pay to see it in the cinema, when they've already paid their TV license and can therefore watch it at home without paying any extra money. What kind of insanity is this? I can understand cinematic showings of theatrical productions (as they did with Frankenstein, coincidentally, a production starring Benedict Cumberbatch), as not everyone can make it to wherever they're putting on the play, but when it's something that's being broadcast directly into your living room, why would you leave your home and pay extra money to watch it elsewhere?

I just don't get it.

I am very excited about the special, but not excited enough to go and see it at a cinema, because that would just be silly!

They've done this a few times with Doctor Who now, and it's been pretty popular.  I think the 50th Anniversary screening was actually the top of the UK box office for that week, and it was only on for one night!

Is everyone getting excited for the new Sherlock? I am!  :exc:

I'm contemplating going to the cinema to see it; otherwise I'll have to wait too long. It'll be shown in cinemas here at 11.30 am on the 2nd of January, which I think is quite close to the UK air time.

I am DYING to see it. I'm, like, wetting my pants excited about it. I adore Sherlock and having this special to look forward to has kept me going while waiting for the next "series" to air (I say series, but I'm not sure we can really cal it that when it's only 3 episodes - still, they're feature length, so we can't really complain, can we?).

I plan to re-watch them all in their entirety (including the special) before the new season starts.

I'm re-watching them now, Kell. :) I know the special takes place in a different era, but I felt like immersing myself in the show again. Currently watching the last episode of the first series.
