Inver Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Just finished 'The Memory Garden' by Rachel Hore, read via bookring started by Kate.
pickle Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Currently reading a few books at once, keep changing with the mood I am in. so I am reading London's Dead - which is really fascinating just not something you can read as a novel. Also reading Ark - Stephen Baxter but its not something I want to read full time, although its fascinating I don't really like any of the characters so keep finding myself skim reading. So I started one of my library books, Death's Mistress by Karen Chance, someting to just skip into vampireas and such..
Peacefield Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I was plenty busy this weekend so didn't get a chance to open up The Heretic's Daughter, but I aim to remedy that tonight before bed . I also have big and exciting news! Well it's big and exciting for me, LOL. I ran to the market tonight after I returned home and snuck into 1/2 Price Books, and went directly back to their clearance section. I found a copy of Alan Bradley's The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and I almost screamed! I've been keeping my eye out for this book, and am delighted that I finally found it and only had to pay $2! Needless to say, it was a very productive trip .
lopeanha Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Today in my maibox: Shiver and Linger by Maggie Stiefvater and The Giraffe, the Pelly and me by Roald Dahl
Kylie Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I'm a little over halfway through We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The story is unrolling tantalisingly slowly.
chesilbeach Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Decided to start Hotel World by Ali Smith, as it's been sat on my shelf for ages now. Already two stories in, and absolutely loving it, I've yet to read anything of hers I haven't enjoyed.
Brida Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Read a few chapters of Le Testament... and I'm really liking it. But I think I'll need to reread it sometime in the future, it's just one of those books...
Stephanie2008 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I can't find the time to read at the minute and my mojo has completely gone. I need a good book to draw me back in
green Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Finished River Of Darkness by Rennie Airth early this morning. Very good crime novel set in 1921 England with echoes of WW1. Started The Witch Of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Peake this afternoon. Written in 1959 it's set in Connecticut of 1667 and not surprisingly is about a witch trial.
Pixie Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I was reading David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, but I am putting it aside to read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson since we will be discussing it in September.
pickle Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I finished my bit of fluff read Deaths Mistress this afternoon the usual vampire stuff just what you need to keep happy I have now either Sue Townsend -The Lost Diaries of Adrian Mole or Juli Zeh - Dark Matter where I was attrac ted to the title of the book, hope its good.
Lucybird Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Today I've been working on my NVQ. This involved reading one of my psychology textbooks from uni and getting annoyed that I had a lot of information to answer the question, and that the question wasn't specific enough. Still reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog.
madcow Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Managed to read a good chunk of Jodi Picoult's Picture Perfect this morning
Kylie Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I finished We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and I'm now moving on to Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.
pontalba Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 (edited) I finished We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and I'm now moving on to Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I haven't read anything by Jackson, but saw the movie The Haunting of Hill House years ago, and talk about c-r-e-e-p-y! Are the books as creepy as I think? Read some more in The Secret Pilgrim by John LeCarre. It was a little slow getting going, but has really taken off. LeCarre is really tops! Edited August 31, 2010 by pontalba
whitegold Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 FINALLY finished Eat Pray Love. It only took me a whole month. Damn reading mojo withered and this book didn't quite help. It was overall a good read but I found the India section kind of dragged on. Maybe its my lack of interest in ashrams and meditating? but I found it kind of boring and hard to get through. Otherwise, I loved the Italy and Indonesia sections! Made me really want to travel..and soon! Now I must figure out my next book to read. This is going to be a tough choice!
Kylie Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I haven't read anything by Jackson, but saw the movie The Haunting of Hill House years ago, and talk about c-r-e-e-p-y! Are the books as creepy as I think? I think I'd describe We Have Always Lived in the Castle as a bit disturbing. But it was quite interesting and really well written.
Roland Butter Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I read an article about Shirley Jackson a couple of weeks ago, and it stirred my interest. By the sound of it, she specialised in "disturbing". I think I'll be looking out for something by her in the not too distant future - "The Lottery" sounded like a challenging story, certainly.
Kylie Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I have The Lottery and Other Stories on my TBR, but I did get around to reading title story. It's really quite short, but very good.
Karsa Orlong Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Since last posting I've read Lustrum by Robert Harris and The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester, and am now about 250 pages into The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo
pickle Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I started The Lost Diaries of Adrian Mole - Sue Townsend this morning and I had forgotten how funny they could be.
Kylie Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Since last posting I've read Lustrum by Robert Harris and The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester, and am now about 250 pages into The Redbreast by Jo Nesbo Ooh, how was The Demolished Man? I received Level 7 by Mordecai Roshwald (a dystopian novel) in the mail today.
Karsa Orlong Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Ooh, how was The Demolished Man? It was great fun! Very inventive and slightly insane. I didn't like it quite as much as The Stars My Destination, but that's a pretty high bar to jump over, imo Going to read the Charles Stross book after I've finished my current read, so I'll let you know what it's like
