Kylie Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 After being pretty good for a long time, I've now bought 5 books in 2 days. I picked up a book from Penguin's new Popular Penguin range (the good ol' orange covers): The Lost Estate (Le Grand Meaulnes) by Henri Alain-Fournier.
AbielleRose Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Read some from Japanese Death Poems tonight and am considering a reread of City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Its one of my favorite books but a reread seems impractical with an ever-growing TBR pile.
Nollaig Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I actually ended up reading about 110 pages of Popco yesterday even though I only picked it up with the intention of reading for a short while, which is good. Only 80 pages left, so hopefully I'll get it finished today.
SueK Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I've got The Savage Garden on the TBR pile. It was recommended to me by a friend - the same one who recommended Shadow of the Wind, so it may be a while before I get round to it Yes, I've seen mixed reviews for Savage Garden but the thought of Tuscany as a backdrop prompts me to give it a go. I really enjoyed The Secret Scripture. Sue. thanks Lucybird, good to know you enjoyed it. I have fancied this book for a while now.
Kate Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I'm reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes at the moment and I plan to listen to Alice in Wonderland this afternoon
pickle Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Happy Happy Happy, my books arrived from Amazon this morning Tess Gerritssen The Killing place and Keeper of the Bride, and since then I have been contemplating ways of faking illness and getting out of work to read
Pixie Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Happy Happy Happy, my books arrived from Amazon this morning Tess Gerritssen The Killing place and Keeper of the Bride, and since then I have been contemplating ways of faking illness and getting out of work to read Just tell your boss you are having "female problems". That always works.
pickle Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Just tell your boss you are having "female problems". That always works. you are right, hmm but that happened only a couple of weeks ago...ha ha just as write this I have been cc'd in an email from a Mr Overy...it must be fate
SueK Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Happy Happy Happy, my books arrived from Amazon this morning Tess Gerritssen The Killing place and Keeper of the Bride, and since then I have been contemplating ways of faking illness and getting out of work to read .. or you could tell them that you have an appointment with the Keeper of the Bride at the Killing Place - that should keep them wondering ......
Pixie Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Oh, I am excited about this one. My very own copy of Oscar Wilde's Complete Short Fiction arrived today. But when will I get to it? That is the question.
pontalba Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Started The Blue Afternoon by William Boyd. Good period piece, mystery. Still chugging away at The Spoon River Anthology. So different, both good.
Jessi Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I am now half way through Marley and Me and am loving it!
frankie Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I am now half way through Marley and Me and am loving it! I'm really glad you're enjoying it, it's such a marvellous, heart-warming story I was bawling my eyes out on page four I think Edit: I'm reading Karen Harper's Shaker Run. It's my first book by her, it's going alright. I think it's the first thriller I've read in a (too) long while, I'm totally enjoying the thriller aspect of it
Kate Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I'm listening to Alice in Wonderland, have 1 n 1/2 hours to go
Charm Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I finished Burnt Offerings today and have now started Blue Moon
frankie Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I finished Karen Harper's Shaker Run and I'm definitely in the mood for another thriller! I might have to go and find the other Karen Harper novel I have...
Jessi Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I'm really glad you're enjoying it, it's such a marvellous, heart-warming story I was bawling my eyes out on page four I think Oh, it really is - I've not yet cried but I am now over half way through and am dreading the end!
frankie Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Oh, it really is - I've not yet cried but I am now over half way through and am dreading the end! The ending is no good, the only downside to pets is that we unfortunately outlive them But there are some really fun and quirky pet tales in the very last few pages, you'll enjoy them I'm sure!
BookJumper Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 (edited) My book activity today was made out of awesome. Judge for yourself. Prologue: a while back me and my sister were talking books, and I used the word "metanarrative"; she then said to me that if I managed to use the word in conversation with a complete stranger - no booksellers allowed - she'd buy me a book. Activity: we went into a bookshop and I dithered nervously for a bit before tapping my sister on the shoulder and walking up to a random young man. I said to him, 'Can I ask you something? I am looking for people to interview for my thesis, it's on metanarrative; would I be able to contact you with my questionnaire? ...' All complete fiction, of course. My sister was suitably proud of my creativity and bought me Paola Boni's L'Evocatore (The Summoner), which looks abysmal in a marvellous way we've settled that when the sequels come out she'll give me other unusual words to puzzle innocent people with. Epilogue: I am not utterly mean though, I will write to the young man with a fictitious questionnaire so he doesn't feel cheated ! Edited July 6, 2010 by BookJumper
whitegold Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I have 100 pages left of Dead in the Family. I'm enjoying it but its definitely not the best of the series. I can never seem to get enough of True Blood/Sookie series! Love<3
AbielleRose Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 That's awesome, Giulia! Read about 20 pages of Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang while waiting for the movie to start at the theater. Have to say, it is the kind of book that should not be read in public due to the mount of blushing it causes!
Maureen Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Just finished 'Broken Skin' by Stuart MacBride. Probably the most enjoyable read of my life..seriously..that good..Jim Wow, that's serious praise indeed! Will have to add this to my wish list! I've not done any reading so far today, but that's all about to change. My plans for today include me finishing my current read and writing the review so that I can start a new book later. I also want to get around to starting a book log here on Book Club Forum, although I haven't quite figured out the best way to go about it yet. Just list whatever you have read in July onwards for now...then you can edit later if you want to include previous reads, but that way you have started on your list.
Kylie Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Read about 20 pages of Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang while waiting for the movie to start at the theater. Wow, are you a really fast reader or did you get to the movie really early? I'm reading Rama Revealed whenever I get a chance. I'll hopefully finish it tomorrow but I've still got around 150 pages left.
pickle Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Read my Gena Sholwater last night looks like a series I might want to get into. I now have Tess Gerritsen's The Killing PLace to keep me amused (when I finish work that is)
frankie Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I started reading Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place last night.
