Coffin Nail Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 If you don't consider yourself a collector, what's the most you've spent on one book?? I can't say specifically but some of my film books were Quote
Kylie Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 I've probably spent $50 or more on some of the rarer Trixie Belden books, and I'll probably spend more than trying to obtain the last two in the series. Otherwise my most expensive books tend to be non-fiction, such as dictionaries, style guides, editor's manual, and mosaic books. Quote
BookJumper Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Though I do consider myself a collector, I'm a destitute, unemployed collector at the minute so there's only so much I've been able to splash - Quote
Nicola Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 I wouldn't class myself as a collector, in that I don't look for rare copies. I do collect my books though and never part with them. The most I've ever spent is around Quote
vodkafan Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) I only buy books to read and so don't care what condition they are in. `The best compliment you can pay a book is read it and then pass it on to others and so on until it falls to pieces.... The thing I like best is to find a great book in a charity shop for next to nothing that I have never heard of but then get to love. Edited March 10, 2010 by vodkafan Quote
Kell Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 I don't tend to spend a lot on books - the majority of my most expensive ones have been given to me as gifts. My lovely hubby spent about Quote
Univerze Posted March 10, 2010 Posted March 10, 2010 Nope, I have never payed that much, most is probably 25 euros, for a bloody paperback too, a book that had just come out and I really wanted to read. I have some Lord of the Rings art books that are pricey, but I got them all as a gift. Besides that I have spent 90 euros or so on a book. But it was a book for university, about classes that we had at the time, actually for school I have at least a dozen books that were at least 50 euros a piece. And they wonder why students are poor. But can't see myself (with current finances, don't know when I have a decent job and more money) paying that much for a book. I'd rather buy three less expensive books that I want than one expensive one. That said, I did promise myself I'd buy proper copies of the books I have loved for years but have never being able to afford nice editions of. Quote
iamnotreal Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 I'm not a collector (what with still being in school and not having much money and all) but the most I've ever spent on a fiction book that I can remember is Quote
dave165 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Some of the authors I like can be hard to get hold of and I have spent up to Quote
Cookie Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Like BookJumper I think my most expensive purchase was my special edition Shades of Gray. Otherwise I will try to buy pretty editions if I have the money and I really like the book. I am currently looking for a nice copy of Dracula because the one I've got was a 99p jobby from the Works. Tristan Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 That's a pretty one isn't it? I'd like to have that one too, and maybe I'll buy it sooner or later, it's 25 euros here. However I'd have to check which stories are in there because honestly, I have about three other books with Lovecraft stories, so if most of those are in there, I'll just buy it when I have money to spare. Which is, ehh never. I gave that one to my gf some time ago. Gorgeous edition, and well worth the investment. You can get it for 20 euros on Book Depository. Quote
Univerze Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Probably, but I don't have a creditcard or paypal. Was going to say the delivery costs a lot since I am in Holland, but it's free delivery world wide, wow. Quote

Stephanie2008 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 I try not to spend too much money on one book, but I did buy two text books for uni which were Quote

I am currently looking for a nice copy of Dracula because the one I've got was a 99p jobby from the Works. The Annotated Dracula is huge, prettiful and does what it says on the tin... I want it bad. A cheaper yet still attractive alternative is the edition foreworded by Elizabeth Kostova, author of The Historian. I didn't really count textbooks and literature anthologies when I answered the original question - pretty much all of the titles I bought for uni were at least Quote
Book Fiend Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Oh I've just been browsing ebay and there is a signed limited edition of The Time Travellers Wife. I want it!!!!! Unfortunately it is Quote

Book Fiend Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I just took a look. Is it the one with the beautiful sailing ship on a red sea? If it is, Isn't it gorgeous? I love the cover and think it's more in keeping with the story. *sigh* That's the one! It's so beautiful! Oh I want it very badly. I'm actually sort of hoping somebody buys it soon before I can talk myself into it Quote
