Maureen Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Tried some local wine called Bacchus Montepulciano. Deep garnet, tasting of fruit. Will definately buy it again. Quote
muggle not Posted January 3, 2007 Author Posted January 3, 2007 tried another German wine today...Have to copy out the whole name as I cannot read it...Domgarten Niersteiner Gutes Domtal. Anyway I enjoyed the wine! Will definately buy it again. My wife likes the German Rieslings. She especially enjoys a wine called Erben Kabinett. Today I bought a bottle of the Ercavio that dogmatix recommended. We will probably try it this weekend. Quote
Sugar Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 My wife likes the German Rieslings. She especially enjoys a wine called Erben Kabinett. Ever since I went to Germany and attended a wine festival, I've always been partial to German Reisling! It brings back so many memories... Quote
madcow Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 I love the Mosel wines from Germany, not too keen on the Rhine ones. Been to a few wine tasting sessions whilst Xmas shopping there Quote
dogmatix Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 I've been so hooked on Spanish and Portugese Wines (with my regular stable of French and California) that I've NEVER tried a German wine. (wierd huh?) Someone want to make a recommendation? In a white I like a dry with vanilla tones. In a red, smooth and deep flaors are my favorite. Quote
Maureen Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I would dogmatix, but apart from the ones I have already mentioned, I don't know of any more. .....should be getting some wine at the end of the week though....... p.s What about Argentinian? Quote
Maureen Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Some nice red Chanti called il Poggio dei Vigneti, which is really good value! The choice of wine is so good nowadays, I always end up buying different ones! Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 I'm not sure the dry vanilla whites are really what you get from Germany (well, there are some weisserburgunder type wines from further south). On the whole you're getting full, sweet or medium dry wines. Lovely, in my opinion, but not the kind of thing that would normally be to your tastes. I am, at the moment, completely wined out. After 3 days of touring Stellenbosch and Franschoek at the end of the trip to South Africa, and going to maybe 4 wineries a day and tasting maybe 4 or 5 wines at most of them, my palate is incredibly jaded and I need a few more days off. Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Yep, but now I'm thirsty dehydrated. Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Water! Not wine! I'm sure I'll be back on the wine by the weekend, though. Quote
dogmatix Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 There is a South African wine I loved called Goats Do Roam, also Goats Do Roam in Villages. 3 or maybe 4 varieties. They're all nice and if I'm not mistaken some of the proceeds are donated to children's charities(?) can't remember for sure. Quote
Lilywhite Posted January 9, 2007 Posted January 9, 2007 Currently enjoying a glass of Montalis Rose, very refreshing and a lovely taste too it. Might just enjoy a couple more Quote
emmasanders Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 Has anyone ever heard of the wine of the month clubs, where they send you 2 bottles of new wine every month? I've thought about signing up for this, of course 2 bottles probably wouldn't last a month, LOL, but I love to try new wine from distributors I've never heard of. It seems a little expensive, but I guess if you think about it, it's a little over $10-$15 a bottle (which is more than I usually spend but if it introduces me to new wine, it may be worth it.) Quote
dogmatix Posted January 14, 2007 Posted January 14, 2007 My suggestion is to subscribe to a e newsletter that recommends a wine a week, read through this thread for our suggestions, and get to know the sommelier at your wine shop. That way you'll be making some informed descisions rater than relying on what they send you. Trying new wines is fun, but I'd hesitate to belong to a wine of the month club. Quote

I am not a fan of the Wine Of The Month clubs. I used to subscribe to The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker and received many, many good recommendations of wine. I would much rather read up on wine and try a few experiments on my own than going the club route. As dogmatix says, I believe you can get some pretty good recommendations right here. Quote
dogmatix Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Had a 2005 Clos Du Bois Pinot Grigio tonight on the patio with grilled shrimp. It was warm here today. (Is that summer I see comming?) Quote
Wraith* Posted January 15, 2007 Posted January 15, 2007 Last night I had a bottle of Domaine de Chevalier 2003. Wasn't too bad but a bit rich for my liking. Quote
muggle not Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007 I had the Vina Alarba from Spain (Old Vines Grenache) the other night and really enjoyed it. I don't believe I have ever had a $6.99 (U.S.) bottle of wine that enjoyable. For those interested, I bought it at World Market. Great buy for the money. Quote
Wraith* Posted January 20, 2007 Posted January 20, 2007 When I got home last night all I had left was a bottle of Bucks Fizz. It was lovely Quote
