Ben Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 You seem to have a good TBR list there, plenty of good choices to go for. Amongst them I spotted The Tales of Beedle the Bard. I read this - this year - and found it a nice little read. Although not as interesting as a full on novel (obviously because they're just fairytales), it is a nice little book to dip into and is very good as a nice light read if strapped for time. Also, I seem to have spotted some books from A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. I read them not so long ago, and have to say I enjoyed them all! Some good story twists and a good plot that managed to keep me interested in buying the next installment. Judging by the fact the ones on your TBR are the one's later in the series, I imagine you've already read some of them, would love to know your thoughts. Anyway, good luck with the reading, enjoy. chesilbeach Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 My To be Read list, somehow never seems to get shorter since I keep buying books(these are the books I actually have and still have to read my wishlist is even longer): Tell me about it! I had 97 books on my TBR list at the start of the year, I've read over 60 books, and I've still got 71 books left to read! I noticed you've read a Meg Cabot book, and another one on your list - I take it you like her writing? I think she's great fun, one of my favourite comfort reads. I really enjoyed the Heather Wells Murder Mystery series - have you read them? Quote

Those were good and funny. Quote
chesilbeach Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I did actually read all 3 of the Heather Wells Murder Mysteries I loved them. Did you read the Queen of Babble ones? Those were good and funny. I've read the first two, but am waiting for the third one to be out in paperback. I really enjoyed them too. Quote
Rosalind Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 I couldn't wait for the 3rd one to be out on paperback so I got the hardback one. Normally I only buy paperbacks, because they are easier to lug around on the train and stuff, but sometimes I just can't wait for the paperback. Have you tried the Airhead one? It was a quick read in my opinion and young adult but still nice to read. I like Meg Cabot books, I even got some Princess Diaries. Quote
chesilbeach Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I haven't got around to Airhead yet, but do plan to at some point. I've read the Princess Diaries upto number eight, I've read all the Mediator series, which I loved, and the two All American Girl books, plus the Avalon High! I'm just as happy reading the YA books as well as the "grown-up" ones Quote
Rosalind Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 (edited) Blurb: Deirdre Martin - The Penalty Box Everyone from Didsbury High remembers Katie Fisher as the dumpy brainiac from the poor side of town. Every one from Didsbury High remembers Paul van Dorn as the school hockey star - and heartthrob. But now they're facing off - and matching up in more ways than one. Katie's lost the pounds, added some self-confidence, and become a drop-dead gorgeous sociology professor. And since a series of concussions put an end to Paul's pro-hockey carreer, his star has dimmed. Now he hits the ice as a youth hockey coach. But he's still got the hometown crowd behind him as the owner of a bar called the Penalty Box. Paul is reliving his glory days. Katie wishes she could put those years behind her. And the battle of wills that ensues just might knock love right out of the game... My Opinion Although I really love this hockey players series, I'm starting to feel a little bit of Deja Vu when reading. This is the 4th book that I've read now and I'm really going to read the rest of the series but I'm going to leave some time between this one and the next. I'm not saying I didn't like this book. I loved it, even it's predictability. It's a good chick-lit book, good to relax to get swept away in the romance and the struggles for the relationship. Grade: 7.5/10 Edited June 16, 2009 by Rosalind added my opinion Quote
Charm Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 That's some TBR pile Rosalind, I thought mine was bad! I've read a lot of Karin Slaughter, Kathy Reich, J K Rowling and Cecilia Ahern books, also loads of vampire reads but none of those on your list. Think I may have to check them out Have you read any Tess Gerritsen or Richard Montanari? You may like them if you like Karin Slaughter and Kathy Reich. Quote
Rosalind Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 No I haven't read anything by them yet. Thanks for the tip Charm Quote
Rosalind Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 Blurb: MaryJanice Davidson, Karen Kelle & Nancy Warren - Bad boys with expensive toys (18+) (from FantasticFiction since I read the EBook version) The Fourteen Million-Dollar Poodle - Nancy Warren Labour dispute negotiator Vince Grange has a reputation for being a tough guy. Tough guys hammer out deals, drink beer, and keep their well-muscled, six-foot-four physiques in shape. What they do not do is inherit frou-frou toy poodles named Mimi who only understand French. Good thing Vince was a softy for his late eccentric aunt, and really good thing she left him fourteen million dollars so he can hire a French dog nanny. The World is Too Darned Big - Mary Janice Davidson The name's Dyson. Benjamin Dyson. Genius engineering geek by day and unfortunately, genius engineering geek by night. Ben may work for the CIA, but he's the mild-mannered brainy type who wouldn't know a gun from a gear shift. Enter Tara Marx. She's six feet of big, bad, booty-kicking fearlessness, and she needs Ben on her mission ASAP. Guilty Pleasures - Karen Kelley Computer entrepreneur Alex Cannedy loves women - the way they move, talk, smell...and other things. He'd love to get to show Kagen Yates a good time, but his sister has declared the wealthy designer off-limits. She even makes him pinkie-swear not to so much as wink at the hot babe who's had her heart broken by men just like Alex. But Alex has no idea how his resolve, will be tested. Kagen has plans of her own My Opinion: I normally love the bad boys in books but these weren't bad enough, too polished. Yhis was bothering me while reading the stories. Since these were short stories it might have been that I didn't get a feel for the characters. Not a bad book, maybe good for a flight somewhere or something like that but not so good for sitting down and reading in one go. Grade:6/10 Quote
Rosalind Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 Blurb: Sophie Kinsella - Can you keep a secret? (from Sophie Kinsella's website since I read the EBook version) Meet Emma Corrigan, a young woman with a huge heart, an irrepressible spirit, and a few little secrets: Secrets from her boyfriend: I Quote
Rosalind Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 I will update soon when I have more time with blurbs & opinions on the other books I've read in the meantime Quote
Rosalind Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Blurb: Meg Cabot - The boy next door (from FantasticFiction since I read the EBook version) Melissa Fuller, gossip columnist of the fictional New York Journal is on the brink of losing her job. This particular morning she is 68 minutes late for work - making it her 37th late arrival so far this year. Human Resources have given her another official warning, her boss seriously doubts her commitment to the paper and, more importantly, even her best friend has begun to worry about her psychological well being. This time, however, Melissa has a real excuse. She has just saved her elderly neighbour from a near-fatal attack, taken her to hospital and in the process become sole custodian of Paco her Great Dane - not the ideal accessory for a New York City girl. Melissa urgently needs to trace her neighbour's only relative and when she finally meets him the real trouble starts. My Opinion: It takes a while to get used to this format since the whole book is in e-mails written to each other. You get the whole story, but you better not miss one email. Once I got used to it the book read very fluently skipping the email headers which I do in real life anyway and the love story unfolds. Summery read like always with anything I've read up to now by Miss Cabot. Grade:7.5/10 Quote
Rosalind Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Blurb: Meg Cabot - Boy meets Girl(from FantasticFiction since I read the EBook version) When you work for a T.O.D. (short for Tyrannical Office Despot... also known as Amy Jenkins, Director of the Human Resources Division at the New York Journal, New York City's leading photo-newspaper), and your musician boyfriend of ten years has just announced that he can't commit to a long term relationship because he has to take it "one day at a time", and your best girlfriend is on fertility drugs because she and her husband can't seem to get pregnant, and your mother is driving cross country in an RV with a younger man, and you can't seem to be able to find an affordable studio apartment anywhere in the five boroughs, it might seem like things can't get any worse. They can. Because the T.O.D. might make you fire Ida Lopez, the most popular employee in the paper's senior staff dining room. And Ida might sue for wrongful termination. And you might just find yourself giving a deposition in front of Mitch Hertzog, scion of one of Manhattan's wealthiest law families, "a soulless corporate drone" who embraces everything you most despise... but also happens to have a nice smile and a killer bod. The last thing anybody - least of all Kate Mackenzie - expects to find in a legal arbitrat My Opinion: Like the previous Meg Cabot I read this is also in the e-mail form, although mixed with phone messages, diary entries and here and there when the protagonist didn't have any other paper nearby, thoughts writtin on menues. I can't say anything wrong though. What am I to do, I love her books. Not better than the previous not worse. Still I think it's best to read when you don't want to think to much. I call these books Quick Reads cause you don't need to keep track of anything story is not that compelling just a love story. Good beach read maybe if you like thise chick-lit kinda work. bethany725 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Hi Rosalind! I noticed you had a Robyn Sisman book on your TBR list.. I have one of hers to read, "Perfect Strangers." I started it a while back but had a hard time getting into it.. Have you read this one of hers? Quote

Rosalind Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 Hi Rosalind! I noticed you had a Robyn Sisman book on your TBR list.. I have one of hers to read, "Perfect Strangers." I started it a while back but had a hard time getting into it.. Have you read this one of hers? I haven't read anything yet by Robyn Sisman - I am a totally bad book shopper, I do tend to go for nice titles and covers, sometimes recommandations. This one was bought on my last trip to london, where I spend most of the week in book shops and this was one of 20 books that came back home. Ok it has been on the shelves since then (christmas) but I think of starting it as soon as I have a free weekend. I hate to lug around hardcover books;) When I've finished it you'll hear it here:D Quote
Rosalind Posted June 25, 2009 Author Posted June 25, 2009 Ooh, you've got Shadow of the Wind to read! It's wonderful. Did you like The Time Traveller's Wife? I'm actually still in the middle of it (likewise with sense & sensibility) but so am not going to put it down till I finish. I love the book. I really do, it makes you want to read on and on and on to get the story. At first it was a bit weird getting my head round to the timeline, but now I get the flow and LOVE the book. Shadow of the wind was bought together with The Time Traveller's wife and on a recommandation of someone. Never read any other book by that author (lost his name for a sec) but I'm hoping it to be a good read. Otherwise it would have been a waste of money;) Quote
bethany725 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 When I've finished it you'll hear it here:D Great; thank you! I'm with you.. I'm totally a sucker for pretty and inspiring covers. Nothing wrong with that! Quote
Rosalind Posted June 28, 2009 Author Posted June 28, 2009 Blurb: Audrey Niffenegger - The Timetraveler's wife (from FantasticFiction) This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. His disappearances are spontaneous and his experiences are alternately harrowing and amusing. The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's passionate love for each other with grace and humour. Their struggle to lead normal lives in the face of a force they can neither prevent nor control is intensely moving and entirely unforgettable. My Opinion: This is one of the best books I've read in the last 5 years(reason for the grade I'm giving it). It completely moved me. The story is compelling and grips you from the start. For me personnally once the pieces started to fit together I got so sad, I could predict what was going to happen. Would recommend it to anyone, and those of us that cry easily with books don't forget your tissues. Grade:10/10 Quote
Rosalind Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Blurb: Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen (from Wikipedia) The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances. The novel follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak. The contrast between the sisters' characters is eventually resolved as they each find love and lasting happiness. This leads some to believe that the book's title describes how Elinor and Marianne find a balance between sense and sensibility in life and love. My Opinion: You can't knock a classic in my book. The story is good, but I had the feeling that toward the ending it started to get too messy. She tried to wrap up the story too quickly. Still not saying a bad word about it in general though. It's a nice story. I just missed the feel that I got with Emma or Pride & Predjudice. Maybe that's because this was the first one written and published. Grade:8.5/10 Quote
Rosalind Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Blurb: Tumbling through Time by Gwyn Cready (from fantasticfiction) In her sparkling and hilarious debut, author Gwyn Cready introduces Persephone "Seph" Pyle, a total control freak who plans for everything -- until a pair of killer heels sends her back in time and into the arms of a ruggedly handsome sea captain straight from the pages of a romance novel. Wandering the Pittsburgh airport before a business trip, Seph decides to kill time with some preflight shopping -- anything to get her mind off Tom Fraser, her irresistible, dimple-chinned coworker turned travel buddy. So when a pair of to-die-for pink stilettos calls her name from a store window, she tries them on -- only to be swiftly transported back to the eighteenth century and flung aboard a turbulent ship sailing the Mediterranean! There, Seph is stunned to meet Phillip Drummond, an arrogant British pirate and the spitting image of Tom. Phillip has summoned her back in time to straighten out his complete mess of a life -- for he is the burly hero in the romance novel she someday hopes to write, and she is responsible for his destiny. But in the midst of turning things right so she can get back to reality, Seph starts to fall for the smolderingly sexy Phillip. And when Tom is thrown into the mix, she doesn't know what -- or who -- she wants. Seph soon realizes that spotting the perfect pair of shoes may be easy, but finding the perfect man can be a real trip. My Opinion: A good summer read, it has all the elements to get swept away to venice(present) and a big privateer ship(1706). Beside that it's the romance story/triangle between Seph, Tom and Phillip that is evenly gripping. I liked it, it was an easy read in my eyes and I think I'm going to read the previously released book "Seducing Mr Darcy" by Gwyn Cready as well now that I liked her writing. Grade:7/10 Quote
