Guest radjack Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I thought it was six? "Although generally known to readers as a trilogy, Tolkien initially intended it as one volume of a two volume set, with the other volume to be The Silmarillion" in Wikipedia Quote
Seiichi Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I would have thought the longest novel was Quote
Raven Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 "Although generally known to readers as a trilogy, Tolkien initially intended it as one volume of a two volume set, with the other volume to be The Silmarillion" in Wikipedia Thanks for that! I'm not saying don't believe it, but I'm sure how accurate that article is. I'm sure I heard a slightly different account of how it came to be published around the time the films came out, and I'm pretty certain The Silmarillion was never seriously in the frame for publication at any point. Either way, the full volume of LotR only runs to 1193 pages in the copy I have, that's a bit shorter than some of the other books mentioned here! Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Mine would be Breaking Dawn at 754 pages I was actually mistaken, mine would be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at 766 pages Quote
Stephanie2008 Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I was actually mistaken, mine would be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at 766 pages That would be mine too Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I didn't realise it was so long before! Quote
Heather Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I was actually mistaken, mine would be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at 766 pages Me too I forgot about our Harry he's sitting there right in front of me. Quote
Freewheeling Andy Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 I've read A Suitable Boy and War and Peace, both of which are actually really good books - although A Suitable Boy is a bit family-romance for my tastes and felt mostly like soap opera to me. Quote
Lucybird Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Mines probably Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix too, I started A Suitable Boy too but never really got into it and gave up, I still have a bookmark where I stopped though! Quote
Chimera Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Probably The Count of Monte Cristo. Around 1500 pages, depending on the editions. I wonder why I cant find the time or energy to read such massive books anymore? Quote
Ravenwood Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Possibly The Quincunx by Charles Palliser - 1248 pages Quote
Seiichi Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 The longest book I have is The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu. The story itself occupies 1184 pages. Quote
shnnntam Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 The longest book currently on my shelf would be Les Miserables by Victor Hugo at 1463 pages Quote
Mazer Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin...I think. 1216 pages. Quote
Ben Mines Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 The Man without Qualities, the brilliant but unfinished novel by Robert Musil, can attain a rather weighty page-count of 1700, depending on the edition. Quote
Kell Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 List of longest novels over at Wiki. Gives almost all the lengths in no. of words rather than pages, though. Quote
Kell Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 The Stand by Stephen King unputdownable I absolutely agree - one of my all-time favourite novels of ANY genre! Quote
sadya Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Thanks for the Wikepedia page. Well, I think the longest book I own right now is perhaps 'Verander de Tijd' which is a Dutch translation of 'Redeem the Time' by Sue Frost with about 560 pages, that's very meagre compared to the more than thousand pages of some of your books.
