Kell Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 If you're just starting out, get hold of a cross stitich magazine - they often have a free kit for a simple design attached to them as well as charts for other designs and ideas for projects inside. It's a cheap way of "testing the waters", as it were, and seeing if you like it. Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 I ordered this kit: And it arrived today, so I'm excited to get started on it Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 Thanks, I thought so too, I adore Geisha's, and I was torn between this one and another Geisha one, but I thought I'd start with this and get the other when I've finished this one Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 I'll let you know when I'm done Quote
Kate Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I have just finished a cross stitch. My favourite collection of cross stitches come from Michael Powell. This is the one I have just finished Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 Ohh that's awesome From browsing the last week or so, my favourite collection I've stumbled across so far is Maia, which the Geisha one I got is from and I want several more from that collection too Quote
Inver Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I have just finished a cross stitch. My favourite collection of cross stitches come from Michael Powell. This is the one I have just finished Loving the colours Kate. lexiepiper - looks like one mega job there, it will be beautiful when you have completed it though. Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Yeah, I have a feeling it's going to take me forever, but it's a nice way to pass an evening and like you say, it's going to look lovely finished and framed! Quote
Angel Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 This is the cross stich that I am doing - I've just started it and its great fun - lots of half and quarter stitches Quote
Angel Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 If you like all kinds of embroidery / x stitch take a look at http://www.wye.co.uk. I've been to the shop a couple of times and it's a treasure cove!!!! Quote
Nici Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I would imagine that it's quite relaxing doing cross stitch? I have often thought about taking it up myself. Quote
Nollaig Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I've never tried it, I don't really even know how it's done I must look into it. Quote
Kell Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I would imagine that it's quite relaxing doing cross stitch? I always found it very relaxing - almost meditative. I've never tried it, I don't really even know how it's done I must look into it. It's quite easy once you get the hang of it. The basic cross stitch is just done in rows - You do all the stiches one way: / / / / / Then go back the other way doing the cross over stitch: You can get very simple starter sets to try - I always suggest getting a cross stitch magazine with a free kit on the front to see if you enjoy it before forking out for any more stuff. Nollaig Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 That's a good idea. They do look gorgeous when done. Quote
Janet Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I've got a small cross-stitch kit of a dog 'hidden' in my desk drawer that I was going to do for my daughter about 3 Christmasses ago! You've just reminded me! Love the bookmark, Kell. Can't wait to see the finished article. Quote
Lilywhite Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I love cross stitch but it's one of my hobbies that falls by the wayside as I just don't have time. I can't wait to see the finished project Kell. Quote
Loopyloo100 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 That looks a really nice bookmark Kell. You're right about it being relaxing and it's odd that lots of people have been mentioning cross stitch on the forum of late as it's something I have recently decided to take up again. I've started on a Louis Wain picture of a cat - I really like his pictures! Quote
Kell Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 (edited) Janet - Get stitching! Lilywhite - Yes, I started running short of time to do cross stitch too, which is why I ended up not doing it any more - reading took priority. Now, of course, Xander takes priority, but as I get limited reading time, it's going to be reduced even more now. But I can always do cross stitch while while I'm watching telly with Dale (obviously, I don't read when I'm doing that - LOL!), which would mean I'm not cutting into book time too much after all... Loopyloo - I LOVE that cat pic! A bit advanced for me right now (I'm pretty much starting almost from scratch as it's been so long - LOL!). I think tiny projects will be the way to go for some time yet, till I get more time to myself again. Nici - I hope you'll find a good one with a decent kit as a free kit. Let me know how you get on! I finished the gold edging and started on one of the leaves at the bottom today... Edited February 17, 2009 by Kell Quote
lexiepiper Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 I like the bookmark kit Kell, been thinking about getting one for myself, seen ones with Disneys characters and thought they were cute, but it'll have to be after I've finished my big Geisha project, which is going to take me months I think Quote
BookBee8 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I like the bookmark kit Kell, been thinking about getting one for myself, seen ones with Disneys characters and thought they were cute, Ooh, I'd love to try it.
