Charm Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 I think she gets a vague mention in the first book, just to say that she'd gone off the rails I think, but it's just a brief paragraph at most. Oh I see, thanks for that chesilbeach . Its been quite a while since I read the first book so that probably expains why I don't remember. I have a mind like a sieve Quote

Charm Posted July 16, 2009 Author Posted July 16, 2009 Chesilbeach is right, it is really brief Charm (I forgot too!), just like when Sookie mentions her Auntie too who passed away, blink and you miss it Gosh it must have been. It talks about when Mr Catalaides went to Sookies house to tell her about Hadley and everything. You'd think it would have gotten more of a mention, especially when Sookie was down on her luck and could have done with the inheritance. I suppose it's obvious now that Ms Harris was saving it all up for Definately Dead! Quote

Charm Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 All Together Dead ~by~ Charlaine Harris Synopsis Courtesy of Waterstones: Sookie's beginning to get used to being surrounded by all varieties of undead, changeling, shapeshifting and other supernatural beings - but even she has her limits. She'd really like to take a while to get over being betrayed by Bill, her long-time vampire lover, and get used to her new relationship with the sexy shapeshifter Quinn - but instead, she finds herself attending the long-planned vampire summit, the destination of choice for every undead power player around, as a sort-of human 'Geiger counter' for Sophie-Anne Leclerq, vampire queen of Louisiana. But the job is fraught with difficulties. Sophie-Anne's power base has been severely weakened by Hurricane Katrina, and she's about to be put on trial during the event for murdering her king. Sookie knows the queen is innocent, but she's hardly prepared for other shocking murders: it looks like there are some vamps who would like to finish what nature started. With secret alliances and backroom deals the order of the day - and night - Sookie must decide which side she'll stand with, and quickly, for her choice may mean the difference between survival and all-out catastrophe. My thoughts: There was a lot more action in this one from the word go. Sookie has to attend the Queen's trial and vampire summit but this isn't the only ordeal she as to endure. A lot of vampire politics and betrayals with a fast paced storyline filled with intrigue and deception. Another great Sookie read. 9/10 Quote
Charm Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 From Dead To Worse ~by~ Charlaine Harris Synopsis Courtesy of Waterstones: The supernatural community in Bon Temps, Louisiana is reeling from two hard blows: the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina, and the manmade horror of the explosion at the vampire summit in the up-north city of Rhodes. Sookie Stackhouse is safe but dazed, and she's yearning for things to get back to normal. But that's just not happening. Too many vampires - some friends, some not - were killed or injured, and her were-tiger boyfriend Quinn is among the missing. It's clear that things are changing, whether the weres and vamps like it or not. And Sookie, Friend to the Pack, blood-bonded to the leader of the local vampire community, is caught up in those changes. She's about to find herself facing danger and death and, not for the first time, betrayal by someone she loves. And when the fur has finished flying and the cold blood has stopped flowing, Sookie's world will be forever altered ... My thoughts: There is a lot goes on in this book but I wouldn't describe it as action packed. We get to hear a lot more about more recent characters like Amelia and Quinn and meet a mysterious man from Sookie's past. A lot of the regulars are there of course but the storyline appears to be tying up a lot of loose ends by the second half of the book as if it was the end of the series. I'm very interested to see what the next book is about and how some of Sookie's new relationships pan out. 7/10 from me, just because it wasn't as action packed as some of the rest and I felt as if it wasn't really going anywhere at some points. Charm Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 I finished Dead And Gone ~by~ Charlaine Harris last week, forgot to do this! Synopsis Courtesy of Waterstones: Now it's the turn of the weres and shifters to follow the lead of the undead and reveal their existence to the ordinary world. Sookie Stackhouse already knows about them, of course - her brother turns into a panther at the full moon, she's friend to the local Were pack and Sam, her boss at Merlotte's bar, is a shifter. At first the great Were revelation seems to go well - then the horribly mutilated body of a were-panther is found outside Merlotte's. Though Sookie never cared that much for the victim, no one deserves such a horrible death, so she agrees to use her telepathic talent to track down the murderer. But what Sookie doesn't realise is that there is a far greater danger than this killer threatening Bon Temps: a race of unhuman beings, older, more powerful and far more secretive than the vampires or the werewolves is preparing for war ... My thoughts: The weres and shifters have seen how well it went when the vampires revealed themselves to the world so now they do the same. All seems to go well until a shifter is found crucified in the parking lot of Merlotte's. Sookie uses her ability to try to help even though she has her own problems at the min, her new relatives have just told her that a very dangerous supernatural is out to kill her ... This book seemed a bit slower paced than the norm but I still enjoyed it. We discover a lot more about Sookie, her heritage and what makes her and her brother Jason so desirable. Sookie is her fearless, determined self who is loving finding out about her new family, complete with attached danger and even appears to sort out her love life at last! 8/10 I've really enjoyed the whole series and hope there are more Sookie books to come Quote
Weave Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Glad you enjoyed it Charm, I did like the end when her grandfather told her 'that the vampire loves you' and Sookie is left thinking, 'which one?' Quote
Charm Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Ah but does he love her cause she's part fairy or because she's just Sookie? I hope she stays with Eric, I think he really does love her and that's who her grandfather means .... well, I hope! Quote
chesilbeach Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I can't wait to read Dead and Gone, so I'm glad you enjoyed it Charm - it makes me look forward to it even more! Unfortunately my library doesn't have it listed yet, as they are waiting for the paperback version to come out, but that isn't due until April next year according to Amazon, so I'll probably have to splurge on the hardback version! I'll treat myself before my holiday, so I've got something good to take with me The authors website has the following comment: "The next original Sookie Stackhouse novel will be on sale in May 2010". I guess that's probably USA release date, so we may have a little longer to wait, but at least we know there is more to come. Quote

Charm Posted July 27, 2009 Author Posted July 27, 2009 I'm sorry Harvest wasn't as good as you were expecting, it's one of Gerritsen's I've still to read, if you've not read it already her last stand alone book 'The Bone Garden' is really good Thanks Lexie, I've read The Bone Garden and thought it was really good, I loved the switch between the two different times. I still think her Isles/Rizolli series was her best so far. Yeah he played Vinnie thank you! I've been wrecking my brain trying to think who it was he played! I don't watch it now so I don't know any of them. Result! Also, this author's been recommended to me quite recently - like Friday! It's funny when things keep popping up. It's almost like a sign that I need to get off my backside and locate one of her books. Which one should I start with, Charm? Hope you're lovely and well. Hey Mac, I'm good thanks fer askin I would start with The Surgeon, its the beginning of a fantastic series. It carries on with The Apprentice, The Sinner and several more. They are all great reads Quote
Charm Posted August 5, 2009 Author Posted August 5, 2009 After finishing the Sookie Stackhouse series my reading mojo has been less than accommodating, but I did manage to read Skin Privilege ~by~ Karin Slaughter this week Synopsis courtesy of Waterstone's: Lena Adams has spent her life struggling to escape her past. She has only unhappy memories of Reece, the small town which nearly destroyed her. She's made a new life for herself as a police detective in Heartsdale, a hundred miles away - but nothing could prepare her for the violence which explodes when she is forced to return. A vicious murder leaves a young woman incinerated beyond recognition. And Lena is the only suspect. When Heartsdale police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, Lena's boss, receives word that his detective has been arrested, he has no choice but to go to Lena's aid - taking with him his wife, medical examiner Sara Linton. But soon after their arrival, a second victim is found. The town closes ranks. And both Jeffrey and Sara find themselves entangled in a horrifying underground world of bigotry and rage - a violent world which shocks even them. A world which puts their own lives in jeopardy. Only Jeffrey and Sara can free Lena from the web of lies, betrayal and brutality that has trapped her. But can they discover the truth before the killer strikes again? My thoughts: Jeffrey Tolliver is the Chief of Police for Grant County. He and his wife Sara are again in a position where they have to help Jeffrey's detective, Lena Adams. While trying to help her stepfather, Lena has found herself right in the middle of a violent world of organised crime and she wants to make sure the whole organisation gets brought down ... It took me ages to get into this book. I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I didn't like one of the main characters - Lena Adams. I find her very irritating in so much as I think at this stage of the series she should have at least grown up a bit, not be so self centred and thoughtless, and have calmed down. The storyline did appear to be well thought out with an interesting topic, although it began to get a bit complicated. At several points I had to flick back to different parts of the book to get the story straight in my head and I thought more could have been revealed as the plot unfolded to keep up my interest. Not one Ms Slaughter's best in my opinion but still not a bad read, if you like the rest of her books you may enjoy this one too ... 6/10 Quote
