Lilywhite
Coming soon to the BBC! Looks quite good this one although Tess is forever tainted due to A-Level English Lit. It's one book I will never be able to enjoy again, although I hope this adaptation turns out well
Janet
I'm going to give this a whirl.
scottishbookworm
what night is this on?
Janet
It starts on Sunday 14 September (BBC1) but I'm not sure of the time - probably 9pm at a guess.
KW
Will it air only in the UK? Does anyone know? I loved the movie....
Lilywhite
It's on the BBC here KW so it's probably only in the UK. They do tend to go to DVD quite fast, so you may be able to pick it up that way.
Janet
KW - I'd be happy to tape it for you and send it to you in the USA, but I think your video system is different from ours?
KW
DANGit! Janet, that's a lovely offer. I'm pretty sure the systems are different, tho. Guess I'll have to watch the thread, see how you all like it and WAIT...
Michelle
Do you not have an American BBC channel over there.. would that show it?
Lilywhite
There are also ways of acquiring it.... although I would never condone such behaviour
Angel
I can't wait for this! It's one of my favourite Thomas Hardy novels and it's ages since I last saw the film
Stephanie2008
I haven't heard of the book, but the TV series looks good.
Prof.
Hi, I was wondering if anyone was watching the new BBC adaptation of Tess that started airing on Sunday? I saw the first episode and thought it was pretty good. Gemma Arterton's performance was quite vivid and reduced me to tears several times... I haven't actually read the book so I'd be interested to learn how accurate the adaptation is and what others thought of it.
LucyD
I thought the TV adaptation was fab too - I thought the actress playing Tess was excellent. I haven't read the book for a while but it seemed to follow the book pretty faithfully from what I could remember. Looking forward to the next instalment! NiceguyEddie
It was very good. And the actress was excellent. Tess was one of my A Level texts & it was at the time that the Roman Polanski film was released with Nastassia Kinski.
KW
Roman Polanski film was released with Nastassia Kinski. An engaging if not tortured story - at least in RP's version. Again, I wish I was in the UK to see this version!!
Angel
I remember the RP adaptation. This version seems to be following the book fairly well so far. Looking forward to the next episode

Michelle
That's possibly only available in the UK though?
Prof.
Difficult for me to say! But I don't see why, it's on a public website so surely globally accessible?
Janet
Yeah, Michelle's right - Iplayer is only available for viewing in the UK. I thought it was great. Darker than I was expecting. Alec is a real and gave me the creeps. Roll on next week.
Prof.
Yeah, Michelle's right - Iplayer is only available for viewing in the UK. Oh, well that sucks. On behalf of the BBC, I apologise.
Janet
Do you work for the BBC? I have a 'friend' (from another forum) who tried watching in Australia and she got a message saying it was only available in the UK. Hopefully the BBC will get some kind of worldwide deal. angelofboox
I read an amusing review in the Metro of this (did anyone else catch it?) and then watched it later the same day (I sky plussed it). The article remarked that the first scene with the dancing girls looked as if it were out of America's Next Top Model and the guys were in general were too cleaned up - so not as gritty as the book was, really (and the only previous adaptation I've seen that came on TV several years ago? I was quite young, but remember it vaguely). I didn't think it was too bad, but Arterton's accent did make me laugh. Still, it's very different to the role I saw her in St. Trinian's, so her difference in character makes me think she could be a good actress. Michelle
I thought that there was some restriction on the iplayer, as it had been discussed in a Dr Who forum.. I didn't know if it was for certain programs only though. I suppose it's to do with licences?
