Your Reading Year So Far

Recommended Posts

Now we're a quarter of the way through the year, I wondered how it was going for you, reading wise. Has it been a good start, or a bad one? Do you seem to be reading more books, or less? Which have been your favourites?

Personally, I'm surprised by the amount of books that I've read so far.. according to LT, I've finished 30 books already! (Last year I read 51 in total.) This may be down to the fact that quite a few of these have been review books, either from authors or publishers, so I've felt quite a bit of pressure to get them read. Plus, thankfully, the majority have been pretty good reads! :D

Although there have been many good reads, my absolute highlights were:

Notes From An Exhibition by Patrick Gale

Blood Ties by Sam Hayes

Emotional Geology by Linda Gillard

Well I've re-read Memoirs of a Geisha, read Crime and Punishment for the first time (which was amazing!), re-read sevral books I loved as a child (The Worst Witch and 12 R. L. Stine books), re-read The Shining, read my first James Petterson novel, plus numerous short books to my children. Currently reading The Timer Game.

Not an incredibly long list but in that time I've also organised and executed 4 large parties, 2 charity benfits, written several short stories, and maintained a household for seven! So I think I'm doing well! Haha!

I have had quite a bad start, but I had an awful lot to do at the start of the year to do with my finances, Katie's 1st birthday and having the new baby, amongst other things. I am currently reading The Vampire's Secret and it is the first book I have really enjoyed in a long time, which saddens me somewhat. I hope things will pick up from now on. :D

I have had a really good start to the year. I have managed to read 77 books so far this year and going to try to read about 150 by Christmas. I mostly read romance books that are quite easy to read and don't take long. I read on the bus to and from work, also at lunch times. Then I spend most evenings reading. I just love reading and escaping from everything.

I've not read a lot this year, but what I've read has generally been excellent, whether it's The Kite Runner or a history of St Pancras station.

I'm taking a long time, it's no surprise, to read Thomas Pynchon's Vineland. But, although it's completely and utterly barking mad, like a Californian Murukami after too much strong dope, it is brilliant.

I think I'm slightly up on last year too, this last few weeks I seem to have read more and more :smile2: 25% of books read this year have been by Tess Gerritsen, she is fast becoming a favourite author of mine :011:. The only book I wasn't keen on was Boy A by Jonathan Trigell, I couldn't get certain things out of my head and it spoilt it for me.

Highlights have been:

Water For Elephants by Sarah Gruen

Footprints In the Sand by Sarah Challis

Blood Ties by Sam Hayes

Harvest & Vanish both by Tess Gerritsen

The above books I've scored 9/10 and to press Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes will be up there too. :D

I've only managed 11 so far this year (compared with just 8 in the same period of 2007) but that's because I'm doing A level English (2nd year) so I'm reading lots and lots of World War 1 poetry, Shakespeare and John Clare poetry at the moment.

It should pick up significantly after June 11th!

Out of those 11, I've read a couple of crackers, notably The Book Thief and Mister Pip. My least favourite so far has been Casino Royale.

My highlights so far:

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco

Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire

My reading seems to have slowed down considierably since becoming pregnant (probably due to a lack of concentration and an inability to sit comfortably for any length of time.

By the end of April this year I had finished 29 books and abandoned 5.

Compare that to:

2007: 52 finished / 1 abandoned

2006: 35 finished / 3 abandoned

Looks like last year was a bit of a bumper year for the first quarter (and a big improvement on 2006) but I've had a massive fall-off this year for the same period.

So far this year I've read 17 books which has been helped in part by The Series of Unfortunate Events series which have been quick reads--I can't really identify any particular favorite but The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and The Knitting Circle by Ann Hood have been particularly good

I've not read as much as I would have liked to so far this year but that has a lot to do with increased work load and trying to pass my driving test.

Hopefully I'll get some long weekends in during the nice weather and catch up a bit.

I seem to be having good months and bad months this year, read 26 books so far and my aim is 70 -

Jan 08 ~ 5

Feb 08 ~ 2

Mar 08 ~ 8

Apr 08 ~ 9

May 08 ~ 2 to date

At the moment I just cant get into reading. I think Mount TBR is overwhelming me, I keep picking up books but cant make a decision on reading any of them. I had a bit of a sort out and listed a load of books I decided I would never read on RISI but the result is I now have loads of books I actually do want to read. I seem to be finding other things to fill my time and no reading space left :D

He ho, I am sure my reading mojo will recover before my hols.

Highlights

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossini

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Vanishing of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell

I feel as though I have been plodding very slowly through books this year. So far I have read 9 completely and given up on 3. Highlights I think have included I am Legend - see Book Ring threads! and the Tenderness of Wolves. Looking back to 2007 however I had only read 9 by this point anyway so perhaps I am not so slow after all!

I have read 12 so far this year and am on the 13th. I abandoned 2.

Most enjoyed

Sense & Sensibility

Pride & Prejudice

A Traitor to Memory

Plain Truth

But I The Historian is going to be my favourite so far. I am half way through it.

I read The Historian a while back & my wife read it recently. It's very good isn't it?

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Persuasion by Jane Austen

A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin
