theMadHatter Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Hello, I'm theMadHatter (or you can call me Meg!) I love reading and I want to make more of a habit of it! I enjoy reading fantasies, romances, and sci-fi. Also, fairytales are still near and dear to my heart. Any and all recommendations you have would be most appreciated! A little about me: I'm an artist, an aspiring dungeon master, a writer, a gamer, and a lover of all things cute and cuddly (and maybe even a little ugly.) I'm very excited to get started here and read with you all! ❤️ Quote

Hayley Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Hi Meg, welcome to the forum! I also love fairy tales. I’m currently making my way through The Watkins Book of English Folktales. It’s a beautiful book and really interesting! Do you have a favourite book? 1 Quote
theMadHatter Posted August 15, 2024 Author Posted August 15, 2024 (edited) Hi, it's nice to meet you @Hayley! That sounds lovely! I'll have to check it out! For the longest time, my favorite book was The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic by Jennifer Trafton. It's humorous and witty and it has beautiful illustrations. It is an easier read, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Now that I'm older and have read a lot more books since, it's got to be Dracula by Bram Stoker. I love how the story is told in epistolary form, the characters all feel very alive, and how mysterious Dracula is as the story unfolds. Edited August 17, 2024 by theMadHatter 1 Quote

Have you read Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice? I’ve just finished watching the TV series of the same name based on her books (but you do need a strong stomach!) 1 Quote
theMadHatter Posted August 15, 2024 Author Posted August 15, 2024 @lunababymoonchild I have not! It's a series my dad got into and enjoyed, but I haven't read it myself. I will definitely have to add it to my list! (I can imagine! I loved watching The Walking Dead which was also quite visceral, so it may be up my alley.) How was the TV series? Quote
Madeleine Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Hi MadHatter and welcome to the forum The TV series of Interview with the Vampire is quite different to the books, the book starts in 1791 with Louis and Lestat's first meeting, though the interview is in the present day, so the books go back much further with much more history to cover. The first 4 books are the best in my opinion, the second one, The Vampire Lestat, is my favourite, as you get Lestat's side of the story, plus his background, told in his voice, which just jumps off the page. Sadly Lestat hasn't been in the 2nd series that much so far, and there's been too much background music! Hoping it will get better soon. 1 Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 @theMadHatter I absolutely love the TV series. @Madeleine is right, Lestat isn’t in it often enough for my liking either. It’s been 12 years since I read the book and I only read the first two, so don’t remember much about it but there is going to be a third series in 2025, concentrating on Lestat who is a rock star, literally, he becomes a rock star in the book, I do remember that! - the actor who plays him is just right. I do have trouble hearing what some of the characters say, I just thought that they were mumbling/it was the accent and since I view alone I can have the volume as loud as I like. The series is on Sky Catch Up and since its’s BBC there’s no adverts. 1 Quote
Madeleine Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 Yep he's a rock star in the 3rd book. I'm glad it's not just me who can't hear the actors, I've had the subtitles on for the new series! I can understand Lestat better than Louis, wasn't sure about the actor playing Lestat at first but he's grown on me, he has his quirks and mannerisms right, which are in the book. 2 Quote
theMadHatter Posted August 16, 2024 Author Posted August 16, 2024 Hello, @Madeleine! Thank you for your recommendation! I have been intrigued by the 2nd book since my dad told me a little about it. It was actually the first book he read, so it gave him a different perspective going into the first one in the series. Which I think is pretty cool! I'm glad you've been enjoying the show, @lunababymoonchild! Too bad about the sound quality though. Wow, he must be quite the character! Makes me want to read about them even more. 1 Quote
lunababymoonchild Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 @Madeleine you should see the trailer for the third series! Featuring only Lestat - visually, you can hear Molloy talking and various other sounds, all of which are really clear. @theMadHatter I truly think that it's the actors who are mumbling, rather than the quality of the sound. Nobody is in any doubt about what Santiago has to say, the actor starting his career in the theatre and not needing to adopt an accent. 1 Quote
Madeleine Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 wow they've made the 3rd series, great! I agree about the actors, the actor playing Santiago was perfectly clear, and has a lovely voice too. I can understand Lestat better than Louis (maybe it's the French accent, though the actor is actually Australian). Yes you get a completely different perspective in the second book. 2 Quote

Did you hear Jeremy Irons when Santiago spoke? I couldn't get away from it. I thought that it actually was Jeremy Irons the first time I saw/heard him. Quote
Madeleine Posted August 16, 2024 Posted August 16, 2024 I am familiar with the actor playing Santiago, but yes he does have a similar voice to Jeremy Irons now you mention it. Quote
