Rhiannon Giddens is probably the best performer that you have never heard of. She has won several grammies, been nominated for numerous others and has won a Pulitzer. Loreena McKennitt - Canadian singer/songwriter, probably more in the folk genre, I first heard of her during a walk in Scotland back in 2013, when a member of the group played us her version of "The Highwayman", in the middle of a wood somewhere.  Very haunting, she's also set "The Lady of Shalott" to music which is worth a listen.
