frankie
I've started reading One of Us by Åsne Seierstad.
anemone
For that reason I haven't yet started this series. I've heard many great things, but I cannot stand huge cliffhangers. I own books 1 & 2 but I'm saving them until book 3 is out so I can read the whole series in a shorter period of time and I won't have to wait so long. I'm glad to read though that you're enjoying the books so much . You've got a point ! I will be honest when I started it I was convinced it would be a finished series, maybe I would not have started it had I known. Then again I dont regret it too much, as it is a captivating series, and anticipation is a good thing too! I hope you (and me) won't have to wait too long for the 3rd one!!!! Brian.
Made a proper start on The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy this evening. Slowly getting into the story and her style or writing.
chaliepud
Finished Blackout by Connie Willis, a great read and think I will break my book buying ban to buy the sequel. Now about to start Only Ever Yours by Louise O'Neill.
Janet
I finished Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford today. Great book! I've started Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. I'm not very far in at all, but so far, so good.
Athena
I'm currently reading Trudi Canavan - The Age of the Five 3: Voice of the Gods. I'm only at page 60, I didn't read a lot yesterday (still, it felt like I read less than 60 pages so then 60 is pretty good). I'm enjoying it so far, I look forward to read how the trilogy ends. Shyora
Started my year finishing the Grisha trilogy - Leigh Bardugo (book 2 and 3). Currently reading Queen of Shadows - Sarah J Maas
Emmabbooks
Having just finished (and loved) A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome by Alberto Angela - where a tour guide takes you back in time to 115 AD and walks you round the city = absolutely brilliant. I've just started something completely different: Death Comes First by Hilary Bonner (a thriller). A promising Prologue, lets hope it continues as such. bobblybear
Making my way through The Girl With All The Gifts. It's not bad, but I don't think it's very well written and some turns of phrase stop me and take me out of the story.
Nollaig
I now have three books on the go, somewhat unintentionally. Two thrillers, one set in Iceland, one in Norway, and my Irish Counties Challenge book, which is slow going due to dense prose. Hoping (somewhat optimistically!) to have all three finished by Sunday evening, so I'll have read 12 books in January.
Anna Begins
Making my way through The Girl With All The Gifts. It's not bad, but I don't think it's very well written and some turns of phrase stop me and take me out of the story. No, no, stay with it, its worth it (at least it was to me). I think the twist is great and different. How far into it are you? Edited to add: I am now 60% into Elizabeth Wurtzel's More Now Again. I am past the worst of it but the next 40% isn't all that pleasant either. Still, I feel like now was the time to re-read it. I'm like the majority, I'm not sure I will do many re-reads this year. chesilbeach
I've just got to the end of book two in The Old Wives' Tale ... it's got four books in total, so I'm just under halfway through the whole thing now. I'm going to take a break so I can read Just William for the group read, and I probably ought to read my book group book too, as it's not a small book, but then I'll go back to The Old Wives' Tale afterwards, as I'm really enjoying it, it's just a slow going read. Alexi
I've finished Love in the Present Tense by Catherine Ryan Hyde (it was alright, but not a lot more), one of her weaker ones maybe? It was due back at the library so I took a break from A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn which I will now return to. It's amazing but what a tome! I will of course be reading Just William alongside it
Athena
I've finished Love in the Present Tense by Catherine Ryan Hyde (it was alright, but not a lot more), one of her weaker ones maybe? I haven't read that one, I do own it, so I couldn't really say. Sorry it was just allright though . I'm just over half way through in Trudi Canavan - The Age of the Five 3: Voice of the Gods, I'm enjoying it.
BookShelfy91
I am currently attempting something I have never done before and reading three books, I am reading The Black Echo - Michael Connelly, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J.K.Rowling and From A buick 8 - Stephen King. Seem to be doing pretty well so far, not confusing at all. Trying to read a little bit of each every day, so I leave HP and Connelly at home and take SK to work with me and read on my break. I started out with the idea of doing one chapter of each a day...but the chapters in Connelly's are different to the other two, instead of being split into chapters the book is split into parts and they're longer than the chapters in the other two. It still works though. Shelfy

There just doesn't seem to be enough pages left to finish the story, unless there is a sequel??

Girl With All The Gifts, I haven't read it but I also know very little about it despite everyone talking about it. You're one of the first I've seen who has been kinda 'meh'. I'm intrigued! Don't think there's a sequel?
Janet
I'm about 22% of the way through Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. It was on my Wish List for years and then popped up as a Kindle Deal last December (I think). I'm loving it!
Alexi
I also bought it in that deal Janet! Glad you're loving it, that normally means I will too

It's not a book I would read again, and I thought it lacked something....I just didn't feel very enthused while reading it. I'm going to start Freakonomics later tonight. I've wanted to read this book for so long (years!), so I was chuffed that the library had it.

bobblybear
Hmm, it will be interesting to hear what you think of it Nollaig. Do you know much about it? There was a twist that everyone goes on about, but a quote from another author on the inside cover kind of ruined that for me. The quote basically said that the book was a cross between another certain book and a particular TV show, so even before starting it, I knew this very specific thing about it (sorry, I'm trying to be vague to not ruin it, but I'm probably being so vague that I'm not making any sense ) which apparently was the twist. It was only reading Amazon reviews that I realised that this 'twist' took people by surprise (clearly they didn't have the same copy of the book I did)....but also a lot of the reviews (especially the negative ones) tell you what the twist is outright. I went to the library today, only intending to borrow one or two books but instead I borrowed four (and that was after putting some back on the shelf). I think my Kindle is going to be neglected for a while!! I borrowed: Take Me With You - Catherine Ryan Hyde (I think/hope this is the CRH that Anna was recommending) Runner - Patrick Lee Sweet Tooth - Ian McEwan Started Early, Took My Dog - Kate Atkinson
Anna Begins
That is terrible that people ruined it for you! That happened to me with The Martian I don't read reviews or anything really, before I start a book, maybe the first bit on Amazon, but I never go too far, because sometimes they tell they whole story Take Me With You is indeed a good book, but I've enjoyed all her books I have read! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. IMO, Don't Le Me Go was my favorite so far. When I Found You was good too. But Take Me With You was great. Nollaig
I don't know a single thing about the story, I thought it was like chick lit/drama for the longest time til someone mentioned dystopia, so I have absolutely no idea what to expect from it! I may start reading it today/tomorrow just to get going before I do see any spoilers! It's a shame The Martian was spoiled for you, Anna. I had no idea what to expect going into that either and wasn't expecting most of it! I've done no reading today, whoops. I put on a face mask thing and dyed my hair instead. I will read this evening, I need to finish at least one more book by tomorrow evening!
