That sounds interesting! I might read that next now reading the poison study books. the first one was good, but the other ones are really predictable and disappointing. It somehow became a teeny novel starting from the 2nd book.

Of course you are right chesilbeach... I didn't really think it through haha. This is a silly question, but how long do books stay within copyright from the moment they are published? And if anyone knows a website for a bit older French books, fire away. I only know the amazon kindle store, but I am guessing there must be French equivalents to project Gutenberg and all the others.

@Brian: I alsready have Calibre, and the issue is that when I try to add the book to my kindle, it won't let me. @chesilbeach: oh no, does that mean if you have a kindle you wont be able to borrow library ebooks on it, and that if I had a different ebook reader it would work?

Hi everyone. Me and my sister gave my mum a kindle for christmas. The issue is, she mainly reads in French - and most free ebooks are in English. Now she wanted to borrow some books from the French library. I made her an account, we got to the page where you chose your e-book, and I downloaded it. Now the big joke is that I can open it on our computer, but if I try to copy it onto her kindle, I get an error message saying it's protected. What's the point of borrowing ebooks if you can't put them on your kindle? Does anyone know how to deal with this? We asked the librarian and she said she had no idea (how helpful). I would appreciate any help.

Does anyone have some advice for books in French that are free? My mum being French, she finds it very hard to read in English, but we always find that all the free books are in English except some French classics. The thing is, she would also like to read some more recent books (last 15-20 years). Does anyone have some advice on that? I know it is very specific, and I tried on French forums but to no avail. Thanks for your advice!

Oh god, and I thought I was an avid / fast reader. I think I read about 25 books this year - and that was because I had lots of time. When I work full time I probably get to 5 maximum. I wish I could just do that for living - read lots and lots of books

It's gotta be Peter S. Beagle for me. The last unicorn is still to date my favourite story in the world, and it has filled my childhood (and life) with magic. The story goes so much deeper than a kid's story, and as I grew older I saw all the hidden messages about life, love, and human nature. It is just so beautiful. It made me dream (and still does).

I like your rule of only listening to them while working out Emmabbooks! It's a really good incentive to do things you normally don't enjoy that much (and working out definitely applies to that rule for me - lucky people who LIKE jogging). My issue with using audiobooks on my ipod are that it's a 4GB one (yup, one of the really old ones), so I'd have to take a lot of my music off first, which I am too lazy to do plus worried I might never be able to retrieve it. I normally just listen to them on my PC, which has the disadvantage of having to carry it around when I cook haha.

Anyone else reading the Cormoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith (aka J. K. Rowling) ? I loooove them, so much suspense and so well written. I just love the characters. Again, I am waiting impatiently for the 4th one to come out - why do I always get myself in these positions haha.

Thank you Yeah Maupassant's stories are always a bit grim / depressing ! But I still like them Bel-Ami for example is less macabre. But une vie is very sad too. It's all about how unfair life is for some people... Not something you want to read when you need cheering up!

So how many books can you get per month with your credit? (it's sad it's not unlimited, I would go for it in a heartbeat if it was)

Thank you guys so much for clearing this up for me, I totally got the wrong impression of audible it seems. I think I will check it out today then Nothing better than having a captivating audiobook to get you through a tough work week. Yes the voice is so important! So thanks for the tip of listening to a clip first - I didnt know you could do that. And will also check with the local library - I think last time I checked they only had classics which is fine too but of course newer books would be great.

You've got a point ! I will be honest when I started it I was convinced it would be a finished series, maybe I would not have started it had I known. Then again I dont regret it too much, as it is a captivating series, and anticipation is a good thing too! I hope you (and me) won't have to wait too long for the 3rd one!!!!

Oh ok, sorry I just thought the way Audible worked as that you get one free book (and you can only pick from a selected list), and after that you pay full price. Maybe scam is the wrong word, but I remember wanting to get Harry Potter and of course that one was not part of the "first free book" promotion. So after that I just never tried again. I really wish there were more freely available audiobooks, I really love listening to them especially since I can do so while doing something else (cooking, cleaning, etc.). My favourite audiobook remains Harry Potter - have listened to all of them several times now, and it never gets old, especially with Stephen Fry. But I sometimes find it tricky when the voice or accent of the reader is not appealing to me - it really plays a big role when they are impersonating different people in a book. I have sometimes stopped listening to an audiobook for that reason. Anyways if anyone has some advice let me know, I know audible but it looks like a bit of a scam (sorry).

Hi there, I am Eleonore. I am 25 and actually a scientist - so not working in literature or anything related but it has always been a passion of mine. I am French but I live in Scotland at the moment. Although I really love writing, I don't think I have any out of the ordinary talent, its just something that I like to do for myself. My favourite authors (there are so many!) are among others Jean Giraudoux, Jean Anouilh, Beagle and Maupassant. I'd say I am quite the classical type! But I am always on the lookout for new authors (one of the reasons I subscribed here).

Anyone else waiting for Patrick Rothfuss' new book? I wish there was any indication on how long we will have to wait for it I finished the wise man's fear so quickly, I really regretted reading it so fast. Has anyone read something about its publication date? I know Rothfuss website does not give anything away sadly, but maybe I missed something somewhere?

Hey everyone, My favourites are: Harry Potter more than anything, dont judge me I grew up with this book and it has shaped who I am, The name of the wind by Patrick Rothfuss, if course the Lord of the rings series, The last unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (yup), the Pricess Bride by S. Morgenstern, The Game of thrones series, His dark materials by Philip Pullman, the Bartimaeus Sequence, and the Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I feel like I have asked this a million times before but what are your best fantasy novel recommendations given my taste? Some that are NOT only about fighting? (I am female, so I would prefer a balance of fighting, love, etc). I don't mind violence or gore, just hate when the whole story is a single big battle or if the story is so complex to begin with that you can't even bother to keep up with the names.

I just started The 2nd book of the kingkiller chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, the wise man’s fear. I really liked the name of the wind - I heard it was a good book and I always had a thing for good fantasy books so I thought why not. So far I think it is quite good, but the very beginning was a bit slow to start with. It is much better now that the story properly "kicked off". I actually want to know what will happen next! But Im so sad the 3rd one is not out yet , I really hope it will not take too long. I hate having to wait for new books!
