frankie
Room and cook your own breakfast. I am sooo not a breakfast person. Okay... I will cook us breakfast, but you will do the dinner, okay? Every other day will be sightseeing, cruising down the Mississippi River, touring the French Quarter, or the Plantations along the river. Sounds marvellous! (And every other day is book shopping?) I bet it wouldn't take quite that long. Okay, minus one day! Nice try, missy!! You guys are too perceptive for my own good! That would definitely want saving! It's a good idea My Wife created me a colour coded Excel document for all mine You already knew this, but she's a keeper That is very lovely Frankie I just remembered I had yet to stop in here to post this year. I think I came in earlier as you were assembling your lists, so waited til they were all finalized before stopping by. I'll echo everyone else's comments with WOW to your reading lists . What a huge pile of books ! Best of luck in the new year . Thanks Julie! I'm still getting around to other people's logs, haven't been to them all! I hope you have a great reading year 2014
frankie
I've finished my first book of the year! Shouldn't be so giddy though, I was suppose to finish it ages ago... It was the Reading Circle book, The Secret History. I'm so behind on it (Have had numerous distractions last week so haven't been able to finish it earlier. Also, Mom's coming to town so have to go out with her, and can only get to the RC business later today.) What a great book. I shan't say any more about it, I'll save it for the RC, but I'm very happy to have started the year with such a great read. And coincidentally, 2013 January RC was also hosted by me, and I liked that book, too, so I'm feeling oddly nostalgic and deja vu-esque I'm happy we had snow in 2013 January, because The Tenderness of Wolves book definitely needed some snowy surroundings. The Secret History not so much. Edited January 6, 2014 by frankie

chesilbeach
We watched a baking programme last night where they made choux pastry, and it's second to top of my list of things to try baking this year, and I've said I'll try making chocolate eclairs. It'll probably be a few weeks before I get the chance, but I definitely want to attempt them sooner rather than later!

frankie
I'm glad you enjoyed the first book you read in 2014, Sari! Congrats on your two new books! I hope your mojo will behave himself this year and not go off vacationing with his lover. He's yours! Thanks Athena! I'm currently reading the other book I acquired this year, it's going good. Mojo's been very attentive now that he's come back and I scolded him about being such a naughty boy Oh my! .. I never expected to be attacked by a chocolate eclair in here. That's quite put a dent in my resolve Sorry about the dent! It looks delicious, doesn't it... I think it might have been Julie or pontalba who posted a pic of a choccy eclair on some thread or another last year (it might've been my 2013 reading log, actually!) and the picture stuck in my mind... I'm not overly keen on chocolate and sweets, as you know, liking the salty stuff better, but those eclairs look delicious... *drools* We watched a baking programme last night where they made choux pastry, and it's second to top of my list of things to try baking this year, and I've said I'll try making chocolate eclairs. It'll probably be a few weeks before I get the chance, but I definitely want to attempt them sooner rather than later! I hope it goes well, I'm sure it does! I'm rather annoyed, though, that we are not neighbors and I won't be able to invite myself over to taste them That chocolate eclair is like food porn ´ We need a bit of that in our lives! Happy reading in 2014, wishing you lots of book filled days & a healthy mojo Frankie Thanks Samantha, I hope you have a wonderful reading year 2014, too! with chocolate filling too! or........ served with coffee and chicory, of course. Oooooh... I really like the look of these... Food porn when on a diet...? Not a very good idea
frankie
I have one new aim for reading and TBR management for 2014: I'm not allowed to buy new books unless I know I will be able to read them within 2-3 months of purchase. That ought to keep the total down! Another thing: I'm getting really curious about Marcel Proust. I have a copy of Swann's Way in English, and I love it to bits, but it's in such a fragile condition (bought it secondhand, and it's had to travel all the way from Australia, too!) that I've been thinking about getting a copy in Finnish. I think I'm able to tackle the series in English, too, but as it was written initially in French, I think Finnish would do just fine. I've been wanting to buy a Finnish copy of the first book for quite a while now, but I know I shouldn't really be buying any books when I'm going to re-locate this year. I already have enough books to break a few backs! So I'm thinking, I will allow myself to buy the first book in the series the minute I hear I have gotten an apartment in Lahti

So I'm thinking, I will allow myself to buy the first book in the series the minute I hear I have gotten an apartment in Lahti Since I've read some of Alain de Botton's Proust book, it's spurred me on to get back to my Swann's Way (Merci Alain mwaa! mwaa!) . A Finnish translation of Swann's Way could be a good start for you to the Proustian task . Heck, I've only read 30% of the first book, and started that 2 years ago! poppyshake
Sounds like a very sensible plan and what's more achievable (but, all the same, good luck my love ) Have always fancied reading In Search of Lost Time .. but it's just such an undertaking ... I guess the way to do it though would be to get Swann's Way and see how one gets on with it. I saw Marcel's grave when I went to Paris .. I think I remember telling him that I would definitely look into his books one day Hope it's not long before you hear about an available flat in Lahti

frankie
Good luck with your aim! And that sounds like a good idea, I hope you get the apartment. Good luck frankie! Thanks gals! Since I've read some of Alain de Botton's Proust book, it's spurred me on to get back to my Swann's Way (Merci Alain mwaa! mwaa!) . A Finnish translation of Swann's Way could be a good start for you to the Proustian task. Heck, I've only read 30% of the first book, and started that 2 years ago! Oops! Do you think you'll go back to where you left it, or start it all over again? I should google and see how many pages all the different books have... Surely they can't be very long. I remember my English copy has the first two books together. I think. But I'm such a beginner, I don't remember if there are seven books altogether, or if there are seven books that each contain two different books. I'm going to google and make a note of it. Maybe I should create a post for this Proustian task on the first page... That Alain de Botton book is marvellous, isn't it? By the way, while we are on the subject, I went to the different Finnish online bookstores after my previous Proust post and found out that the paperback editions are out of print! I don't know if I should go for the hardbacks instead... Or see if I could find the paperbacks in actual bookstores. I went to the local bookstore yesterday and couldn't find one. I did find a hardback copy of Sodom and Gomorrah but it's only the fourth book in the series. Have just wikied the book series: In Search of Lost Time (À la recherche du temps perdu published in seven volumes, previously translated as Remembrance of Things Past) (1913 - 1927) Swann's Way (Du côté de chez Swann, sometimes translated as The Way by Swann's) (1913) In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower (À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs, also translated as Within a Budding Grove) (1919) The Guermantes Way (Le Côté de Guermantes originally published in two volumes) (1920/1921) Sodom and Gomorrah (Sodome et Gomorrhe originally published in two volumes, sometimes translated as Cities of the Plain) (1921/1922) The Prisoner (La Prisonnière, also translated as The Captive) (1923) The Fugitive (Albertine disparue, also titled La Fugitive, sometimes translated as The Sweat Cheat Gone or Albertine Gone) (1925) Time Regained (Le Temps retrouvé, also translated as Finding Time Again and The Past Recaptured) (1927) So there are seven books. No wonder I've been confused, though, because of all the different English titles! I hate it when books have multiple titles in one language... It only ends up confusing people! frankie
Sounds like a very sensible plan and what's more achievable (but, all the same, good luck my love ) Thanks, I will need that I think I forgot to add that I'm allowed to buy that first Proust book even though I might not get to reading it in the following 2-3 months. Hee! Have always fancied reading In Search of Lost Time .. but it's just such an undertaking ... I guess the way to do it though would be to get Swann's Way and see how one gets on with it. I saw Marcel's grave when I went to Paris .. I think I remember telling him that I would definitely look into his books one day I know it feels like a big undertaking... I feel the same way. But lately I've started thinking, the books are 400-500 pages each (I haven't checked each copy, but I've seen them all in the library and the books looked all pretty much the same), and there are 7 books in the series. So it's a bit like Harry Potter. The earlier Harry Potters were shorter, but the latter ones made up for that. Sure, they are easier to read, and there isn't as much print on one page, I assume, but you know where I'm getting at. It's doable! When I was googling the books, I saw a picture of the grave on the wiki page. It's odd to think that I've seen some particular spot on the world on a wiki page and think that you've once been there! I think you should make good of your promise to Proust sooner rather than later Hope it's not long before you hear about an available flat in Lahti Fingers crossed for the flat. Hope there`re plenty of bookshelves. Thanks I keep checking my e-mail every day in the hopes of an offer but so far, nothing Edited January 11, 2014 by frankie
