Could it be Lyra's Oxford [Philip Pullman]? I haven't actually read this book but have read 'of it' and it sounds as if this may be at least the 'sort' of book it could be?

My guess is The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber.

Is it a series? And what century? Around maybe the 1800's?

Yes it is a series of six books and they are set. In the twentieth century.

Is it Elizabeth Peterson.....or Elizabeth Peters I think? It might be the I dunno Vicky Bliss series but don't remember the book title maybe someone else knows? Am I at least close this time?
