frankie Posted September 19, 2013 Share Posted September 19, 2013 My progress has slowed a bit - only up to page 160. Hmm, think I'll go and read a chapter now before I buckle down to work. I love that the chapters are short - it suits me because I'm only able to snatch a few minutes here and there to read. I agree about the short chapters, I love it Makes such a nice change. And it feels like it's easier to keep going when you notice you've just read through another short chapter I'm happy to hear you're about half way now! I finished reading Anne Mreijen & Marco Pauw - Unlimited: Chronisch Boek Zonder Beperkingen and have started Helen Fielding - Bridget Jones 1: Bridget Jones's Diary. I love the film so thought I'd try the original book. On the Kindle I'm reading Eileen Roth & Elizabeth Miles - Organizing for Dummies I hope you enjoy the Bridget Jones book, it's fabulous! I didn't do much reading today but instead I wrote a lot of my books of my wishlist into my notebook. I made a lot of progress with that. I think I might watch the last two films again, as I've only seen them once or twice, and now the books are fresh in my memory, it would be interesting to watch them and see how the film versions stand up.I need to find another audio book to listen to, as I've got used to listening in the car, and even a little in bed before I go to sleep over the last couple of weeks. I'm still thinking that Mansfield Park would be a good one to try, and might help me jumpstart my Jane Austen challenge again, and maybe even try and finish it this year.In tree book news, my reservation at the library came through today, so I've been to collect The Kraken Wakes for the next reading circle discussion. Hope some of you will be joining me to read and discuss it then (it definitely wouldn't have been my choice, so hoping those who voted for it are going to be reading it too! ). By the way, when you're reading the book, do you imagine the actors playing the roles as the characters in the book? I can't quite help seeing Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones etc. But I don't mind at all, the cast was amazing I'm also looking forward to hearing what you think about the second book, because the movie differs from it quite a lot I didn't do much reading today but instead I wrote a lot of my books of my wishlist into my notebook. Have just started The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner and I'm already all at sea .. not that it's a sea-faring book .. no it's definitely land locked, but it's realllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy difficult. The abandon ship klaxon was definitely going off when I decided to read the short intro (I saw it as more of a help guide ) and it said that the first sixty pages are narrated by an imbecile (and it didn't help that it was being read by one ) and it's quite stream of consciousness .. not very coherent and the time frames are jumping all over the place. Okay then .. I'll stick it out .. at least until I get past the sixty pages. It's a classic and on the 1001 so I don't want to just chuck in the towel but oh my! .. not the book for an absent mojo I can tell you. Mitchell was a journalist who joined the "New Yorker" in 1938, and this is a collection of the pieces that appeared in the magazine. The final piece here was published in September 1964, and bizarrely, Mitchell went into the office almost every day for the next 31 years but didn't submit another piece for publication. Mitchell specialised in writing about outsiders - the people who wandered the city's streets, lived in the waterfront flophouses, haunted the dives and all-night restaurants. It's an excellent book, packed with vivid description and engrossing anecdotes, and, although many of the characters Mitchell describes are living on the very outermost fringes of society, his warmth and lack of condescension shine through.
