ian Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Just read about this on the news http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-22015175 Very, very sad. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Yeah, I posted about that here. Very sad news Quote
Raven Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Probably the best sci-fi author in the UK today, that's going to be a big loss. Quote
sophiagia10 Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 It is sad news. I did see an article earlier saying that he was pushing his publishers to get his last book out while he’s still around to see it. Quote
chesilbeach Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 (edited) Just seen the news that Iain Banks has died today. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22835047 Edited June 9, 2013 by chesilbeach Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Crikey, this has happened so quickly R.I.P. Iain Quote
Pat W Hendersen Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Very sad indeed. Not just a great writer. And Inspirational one! Quote
frankie Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 It happened so soon after the first news of his condition, it was very surprising. RIP. Quote
Raven Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 My introduction to Iain M Banks was in a book shop in Guildford in the early nineties, when my brother pointed out a copy of Consider Phlebas. I'm not sure if I bought my copy then, or shortly afterwards, but I quickly finished that off and then The Player of Games and Use of Weapons in quick succession. I've not read all of his books, or even all of his science fiction books, but I'd rate Banks as being on a par with the likes of Wells, Wyndham and Orwell for his contribution to British Science Fiction. He will be missed. Quote
Hal76 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 For anyone who hasn't read any of his books, I'd recommend The Crow Road or Espedair Street as starting points (I've not read many of his Culture books I'm afraid). The Wasp Factory is his first and the first I read by him but it's perhaps a little too dark for some and might put new readers off. The Bridge is also great (once you're into him). I'd perhaps avoid A Song of Stone, The Business and Canal Dreams as none of these are his best works. Still, he was a great author. He will be sorely missed. http://chrishallamworldview.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/iain-banks-where-to-start/ Quote
Hyzenthlay Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 I was extremely saddened by this. One of my favourite authors in the realm of sci-fi, living or dead. He has a very special place for me, thanks to a few of his books and quirks. If anyone is interested, here is Neil Gaiman's blog post about Iain's death: http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2013/06/iain-banks-with-or-without-m.html Quote
