frankie Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Having read it a few weeks ago, the thing that sticks in my mind is the portrayal of the family, especially those nice depictions of family life around the table. BTW, you`ve got a much nicer cover in Finland - the UK one looks all ` Phantom of the opera`. I agree about the portrayal of the family, yes I don't mind the UK cover at all, but I have to say the Finnish one is really, really beautiful A belated happy BCF anniversary! Thanks chesil! We have different priorities... But I don't want my guests to sit on my piles of books... Congrats on 5 years with BCF!! I haven't hit two yet. Lets not say things we can't take back Thanks! But I thought it might be a good thing, not having commando days.... Congratulations on your 5 years! And may I request that you stop posting such excellent reviews? My TBR pile / wish list can't take the strain any longer. Thanks Chrissy! And as you asked so nicely, I will oblige you and stop posting reviews... (But that's only because I got back on track and have now done all there was to be done My mojo's very much waning so I don't think I'll have anything to review in the near future... ) I'm glad you enjoyed The Help, frankie. I thought it was excellent. I really enjoyed the film version too - it's a good adaptation, in my opinion. I hear that's pretty much the common consensus. I've yet to hear anyone complain about the movie Wow, someone's been catching up on reviews! I'm so proud of you for getting your TBR pile down. Thanks Kylie. It's been hard, but also rather easy Quote
frankie Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 I have to tell you because this is too funny and too cute not to tell. As I was doing my reviews yesterday, I was looking for a picture of the cover of Pig Island on google image search. The cover of the book didn't appear for long long ways, but instead all I got were these brilliant pics of happy pigs swimming in the clearest, most beautiful water I've ever seen, and lying on the beach and enjoying their asses out of life I have to show you some of the pictures (and if you want to see more, just image google 'pig island' and there you go!) Quote
chaliepud Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Wonderful pics, who'd have thought pigs would like clean water?! Quote
chaliepud Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 That first one on the second post reminds me of Babe.. Tra la la!! Quote
frankie Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Happy anniversary frankie. Thanks chalie! (and some more Pig Island pics... I'm mesmerized!!) Quote
frankie Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Wonderful pics, who'd have thought pigs would like clean water?! I know, right?! I'm just so happy that there's still beautiful, clear water like that somewhere in the world and that humans haven't yet quite reached it to spoil it, and so pigs can enjoy it to the max The pigs are wild and apparently they are known to bite! That first one on the second post reminds me of Babe.. Tra la la!! Yep Such cute piggies... Oink oink! Quote
Kylie Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Frankie, I think you're onto something: You should make a book of piggie pictures! It'll be the next bestseller, like 'Underwater Dogs'. Quote
frankie Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Frankie, I think you're onto something: You should make a book of piggie pictures! It'll be the next bestseller, like 'Underwater Dogs'. That would be nice. Maybe I should get a piglet. I'm not allergic to them, at least to my knowledge. I had a great but rough time at the doggy show. When I was at the canteen, having a snack, I almost started to cry because everybody had dogs but me. It really got to me Quote
Janet Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Awww, they're very cute! I like the 'Ring 'o Roses' piggies! Quote
pontalba Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 The Donna Leon you mention is the only one of hers that I've read...I really want to read more, and have a few on the shelf in fact. I enjoyed the combination of his home life and the low key detecting. Love the piglets. Quote
chaliepud Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Aww frankie, your time will come and you will be a fab dog owner.. I didn't have a dog of my own until I met Steve, up until that point I used to beg and borrow other people's dogs, including taking them to dog training clubs and competing in obedience competitions.. I also used to go to the local dogs home and walk the dogs that were waiting for homes to keep them socialised and do a little basic training to make them easier to rehome.. I used to always make a beeline for the black crossbreeds as they are notoriously difficult to find homes for. There must be people in your local community that would be grateful for a little help with walking and maybe feeding their dogs if they want to go out for the day.. I know if you lived near me you'd be the perfect person to pop in to check on my doggies if I had to be out for longer than I like to leave them. Quote
poppyshake Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Love the pics frankie .. I love piggies .. always wanted to have one but where would you put it in a two bed terrace? They are as cute as anything though and highly intelligent. I'm sorry you haven't got a dog but it's only temporary. You will own the finest dog in the land one day Quote
frankie Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Awww, they're very cute! I like the 'Ring 'o Roses' piggies! They're darling, aren't they? It was the funniest thing, seeing the pics, when I was looking for a pic of a cover of a book that was quite disgusting and not very pig friendly, either. Not what I expected, but better Oink oink! The Donna Leon you mention is the only one of hers that I've read...I really want to read more, and have a few on the shelf in fact. I enjoyed the combination of his home life and the low key detecting. I agree, it was a great combo I'm certainly hoping to read more. Why don't you do a bit of digging in the shelves... And let me know if the next book is a real winner, if I should get to it sooner than later Love the piglets. Yap! Aww frankie, your time will come and you will be a fab dog owner.. I didn't have a dog of my own until I met Steve, up until that point I used to beg and borrow other people's dogs, including taking them to dog training clubs and competing in obedience competitions.. I know if you lived near me you'd be the perfect person to pop in to check on my doggies if I had to be out for longer than I like to leave them. Thanks chalie, if anyone, you would know how I feel. I didn't know you didn't have a dog of your own unti you met Steve, did he already love dogs or did you have to talk him into owning one? I guess I feel more awful about this because I know I can't have just any dog, I will have to be so much more careful and patient with finding a dog that doesn't give me any allergic reactions... I have no idea what kind of a process that might turn into, and it might take a really long time. I tried looking into rescue dog homes over here but only found one and they had nothing about wanting volunteers over to walk the dogs. I don't know how well I would do with that, though, because I'd hate leaving the dogs behind... Knowing some of them might never find a home. I don't think I'm up for that kind of an experience at this point in my life, when all I would want to do is take them all home... Thanks chalie for your kind words You know how much I would just love to fly over and come and visit you and your precious dogs Love the pics frankie .. I love piggies .. always wanted to have one but where would you put it in a two bed terrace? They are as cute as anything though and highly intelligent. I don't know... Maybe you could let him bunk in the upstairs room which you were at first renovating and keeping nice and tidy for me and Kylie? I mean let's face it, I can be a bit of a pig! So it would be just perfect... I'm sorry you haven't got a dog but it's only temporary. You will own the finest dog in the land one day Yes, that's what I have to keep in mind And I'm responsible enough to realise I can't just jump into it, I have to have stable income and a bigger apartment etc. I've lately realised that I've been groaning and moaning on this thread about my personal life. I'd love to talk about books, but what with mojo having a life of his own, there hasn't been much to talk about... But it doesn't mean I should now dedicate this thread to complaining about everything So I'll try and pipe it. And talk more BOOKS! Quote
frankie Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Okay, this is again not to do with books... but it's brilliant news and it's taking the gloom away from my coming autumn and I wanted to share it with you guys: I got the translating job, it's a work practice thing, and I've got it for a month (and if I do a good job, they might extend my position for a longer period). And the pay is absolutely ridiculous for someone without any work experience for this kind of job. I'm over the moon, and I still can't quite possibly believe it's true. Quote
julie Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Frankie Congratulations !! I'm so happy for you . I hope it works out well and you love it and they will keep you on permanently . Oh ,and could I wager a guess that some of that paycheck will go to purchase a few books ? Quote
poppyshake Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Woohoo .. brilliant frankie You're so suited to it .. you'll be fantastic I cannot keep a pig in the attic ... it gets so hot up there that he'd soon be .... ham Anyway I'm keeping it nice for you .. and a pig would mess it up I know he would .. rearrange all the cushions and un colour code the books etc. Also I do my ironing up there .. he would so get in the way!! (can pigs be taught to iron? ) Hope your mojo soon comes home .. mine came home but I'm still having trouble with it .. chatting back and sulking etc Quote
frankie Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Frankie Congratulations !! I'm so happy for you . I hope it works out well and you love it and they will keep you on permanently . Thank you I can't believe it, still. Soooo unreal!! Oh ,and could I wager a guess that some of that paycheck will go to purchase a few books ? Well.... I shouldn't really, should I? I think I might buy me a nice cheap couch Actually I have a list of things I want to buy when I have money, and now might be the time to look into them. A couch, a new frying pan, an electric toothbrush and a saddle chair for good ergonomy. Oh and I did say I'd join the gym if I ever got a job. Oh and I promised myself I would go get a massage. I can see the money slipping away... Maybe I could buy something really nice and decent for my parents for Christmas, for once! Quote
julie Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Miss Poppy If you put a pig in the attic and he turned into HAM, you could use him for your holiday dinner later this year . Sorta like killing 2 birds with one stone . ( Or one pig with high heat . Leave the iron on and he will cook up a bit quicker ) Quote
Chrissy Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 That is great news Frankie - Well done & Congratulations! Quote
Brian. Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Congrats on the job, I'm sure you will be a translating goddess. Quote
