Karsa Orlong Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I'll probably start it not long after it arrives! Did you know Steven Erikson wrote a couple of books under another name before his own one? It's the other way around - Erikson's a pseudonym, his real name is Steven Lundin I haven't read any of them yet, though. Ah, you tempt me. It's two years since I read the final book and it'd be great to discuss them with someone. But I should probably continue with Robert Jordan. Not that we can't discuss them anyway, of course, but it'd be nice if my memory was fresh. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I've read Stephen Erikson - Gardens of the Moon many years ago, back when I just started to read fantasy books (when I was a teenager). I found it to be really complicated and didn't enjoy it that much. Maybe now that I'm older I should give it another go! It is complex, for sure! If you try to understand everything immediately your really wouldn't enjoy it - you kind of have to go with the flow and trust that he knows what he's doing. His world is like a giant onion from which he peels back the layers with each successive book. I've read most of them twice, and going back to the earlier books with the knowledge gained from the later ones is a revelatory experience. Gardens of the Moon is almost a completely different book on re-read - there is so much foreshadowing in it I spent most of my time going "Oh my God, I can't believe he planned that so early on" Quote

Devi Posted January 15, 2013 Author Posted January 15, 2013 (edited) I was just going through my lists and realised I had missed some books that were in my TBR pile! Partially updated, I only need to enter in my recent purchases. My new shelves are coming along nicely, I've almost shelved all my runaway books. Sorting through my books as I go, I'm going to cull the book herd. Edited January 15, 2013 by Devi Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I was just going through my lists and realised I had missed some books that were in my TBR pile! That happened to me too I spent ages editing and updating my TBR list, went to post it, and the board crashed on me and lost it all. Next time I'll do it in Word first Quote
Nollaig Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 It's a shame you didn't get your library Letting the BF have the room for gaming - I'm an avid reader and an avid gamer - personally I'd love a gaming room whose walls were lined with books Quote

I'm going to sort the rest of my book and then I will take pictures. Quote

frankie Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I bought the other books that I needed to complete the malazan book of the fallen series today! I think I managed to get the same editions for the set too. I really liked the covers. I didn't realise you were going for the infamous Malazan series! It's quite an undertaking, I've heard it's brilliant, but it's not for the simple-minded and I don't think I would even dream of reading it some day, it might be too much for me. I'm looking forward to seeing how you cope with it! Good luck. Quote

Yeah, that's what I did. I'll probably join you for Gardens at least, just so my memory's fresh. Although that's dangerous, cos I probably won't be able to stop myself continuing after that Quote
frankie Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I will be taking my time with the series for sure. I won't read it all in one go like I normally do with other series. I can't remember, how many books are there to the series? And how massive are the novels? 500 pages? It'll probably take a lot of time. And active effort I'm going to ask ex if he's read the books, I can't remember... See if he would also recommend them. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I can't remember, how many books are there to the series? There are ten books in Erikson's 'Tales' series. . . . but . . . A handful of characters/plots spill over into Esslemont's 'Empire' series, of which there are five books (so far). I've only read the first two, and Return of the Crimson Guard answered a couple of questions I had left from the main series. Then there are five (again, so far) 'Beauchelain & Korbal Broach' novellas, although they don't have any bearing on the main stories, they're just a bit of fun. Oh, and there's the new 'Kharkanas' trilogy and the 'Toblakai' trilogy to follow, too - again, no bearing on the main series, although some characters re-appear (for instance, the 'Toblakai' trilogy is set to be about Karsa and his people). And how massive are the novels? 500 pages? Gardens of the Moon is the shortest at 703 pages. The rest are between 900 and 1,300 pages long. Quote
frankie Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Okay, so I guess there's a lot to read, then, whooh! *wiping perspiration off forehead* I can't wait to see what Devi makes of it Quote

karen.d Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I just wanted to share one of my favourite readings of E.A. Poe's The Raven. I know I know, it's the simpsons, shock horror right? I just love the narrators voice - James Earl Jones, he reads it so well. He is probably more well known for Mufasa's voice in the Lion King. He is perfect for reading The Raven. Please give it a chance! Even though it is the simpsons. I love this and I only read this poem because of 'The Simpsons'! Quote
Devi Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 I love this and I only read this poem because of 'The Simpsons'! The Simpsons got me into Edgar Allen Poe! I was youngish when I saw this episode and fell in love with The Raven. I have this book with some of his best works. Quote
Devi Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 (edited) Look at what arrived today! but there is a slight problem... Three more still coming. Edited January 19, 2013 by Devi Quote
frankie Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Uh oh, they take all the space Would you feel awkward about putting the three more novels on top of those? And one of those titles seems taller than others, what's that? I have to say, the books have pretty nice covers... I like the covers of Gardens of the Moon and Midnight Tides in particular... And House of Chains, but I think at a closer look the doggies will look a lot more terrifying .... Quote
