pontalba Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 Sounds ominous! Next book on the list is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion ( Love the spelling of his name ).Another Australian Author hits it big ! They have some great talent over that way . Getting great reviews and praise online, so I'll see if it lives up to the hoopla .. I like the first sentence : I may have found a solution to the Wife Problem . Immediately I'm wondering what the problem is ? Does he have one who is giving him trouble ? Is HE in trouble with the Wife ? We shall see ....... Quote
Devi Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 I will be curious to hear what you think of it, i have seen the book numerous times and have been curious to hear if its any good. Quote
julie Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 Yea, it's been plastered all over the place ,so it must be good. I think one article said they have already bought movie rights to it and the author will be writing a part 2 .....so we shall see . Quote
julie Posted October 18, 2013 Author Posted October 18, 2013 (edited) Alright ! That's enough of this lollygagging around . Time to turn on that Kindle and get some reading done ! I am getting really frustrated with this Reading Slump ,so I am pulling out the Big Guns now . I thought maybe if I put some "reading-related videos" on my thread ,maybe it'd get me in the mood to read . Edited October 18, 2013 by julie Quote

Supposedly the most famous book set in each state . Thanks Julie, that looks quite interesting (even though I'm not from the USA). I've read a few of them, and quite a few are books I have heard of and been interested in. I've bookmarked the site. Quote
chaliepud Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 That's really interesting Julie, I have printed it out for closer inspection! Quote
julie Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 Bobbly and Chalie Yes, I thought it looked interesting . It might be a fun challenge to try .I haven't studied the list thoroughly to see how many I've read, but I recognized some right off . Anyhow, I think it's neat the way they set it up with the map . Maybe it'll at least give you a list of some more books to try . Quote
Little Pixie Posted October 20, 2013 Posted October 20, 2013 Yes it certainly is. Trying to get back into the groove now. Plus I'm trying to run an experiment with Pixie -we are both supposed to read on our Fires to see how long we can read til the battery croaks . I`m at 51% today - I`m assuming I`ll get down to 15% tomorrow, do a recharge in the evening, and then crack on with that Kindle reading on Tuesday. Quote
julie Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 (edited) Pixie Thanks for the update. Good grief, my math is horrible. Rechecked my total, I kept thinking that sounded like too many hours. I haven't read that long -- 4 hrs, 10 minutes so far. Battery down to 45 % Edited October 20, 2013 by julie Quote

And I'm reading one of my old Southern favorites : A Short History of a Small Place . Have you read it ? No, I don't know it. Is this it? http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-Small-Place/dp/014200362X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1382297888&sr=1-1&keywords=A+Short+History+of+a+Small+Place Looks very interesting. So funny! The cover shown on Amazon is the same color scheme/design that the old Half & Half Tobacco tins were like. My father rolled his own cigarettes....used Half & Half. Wow. Quote
julie Posted October 20, 2013 Author Posted October 20, 2013 Yea, that's the book. Terrific story. SO funny . I first read it about 20 years ago maybe ? Anyhow, this author is terrific .Writes the old southern ,rambling stories of all the people in this small NC town . I didn't know where the cover design came from, but maybe that's part of the story . The tobacco tin ? The little boy's dad smokes and his mom is always trying to make him quit,so the boy's dad keeps matchbooks stored all over the place in secret . He is "allowed " to carry around the cigarettes ,but not the matches . I guess she thinks if he has no way of lighting them, he will quit ,so he just hides matches all over the place . It's one of my all time favorite books , filled with a bunch of really zany people . Quote
julie Posted October 23, 2013 Author Posted October 23, 2013 A Short History of a Small Place - T. R . Pearson 5/5 Welcome to Neely, North Carolina ! Louis Benfield tells you the story of his hometown, which is small, but chock-full of memorable characters . I first read this book probably 20 years ago or more ,and decided to re-read it now . It's just as good the second time around . I can't say I've read any other books written exactly like this, other than the other 2 books that are companions to this one .. ( Off for the Sweet Hereafter , and The Last of How It Was ) This author starts rambling ,and has sentences that turn into whole paragraphs . It turns out not to be so short , as it is a challenge to keep up with his rambling style of writing ,so you have to read slowly, so as not to miss a thing . The story begins with Miss Pettigrew .,who is the richest lady in town. She's very elderly, and lives with her maid and pet monkey Junius ,who she dresses in a plaid sportcoat and hat . There are so many funny characters in the book. Pinky Throckmorton plays a big role. He decides that to make a name for himself , he begins taking different townspeople to court for some pretty hilarious reasons ,the first being because of a wooden toilet seat . Pinky is married to one of the Jeeter women .One is fat and one is bald, so he chooses the bald one . My favorite characters have to be the Epperson Sisters ,who live across from Louis and his family. They are middle aged spinsters who emerge from their house one day all dressed identically . They have decided they want to be Triplets . None of them are even the same age, but the sheriff directs them to the courthouse ,and they end up being told that if they want to be legally declared triplets, they need to get 100 signatures from the townspeople ,then they can legally declare them as triplets in court. So they end up getting their signatures easily, and ever after ,they dress alike daily. That is until the sheriff has someone from the mental hospital come pay them a visit ,and they are all carted off to the State Hospital and never heard from again . Anyhow, there is no way to write a short review about this book since it is chock full of funny people and stories . The shortest way I can word it is to say READ THIS BOOK . There's a chuckle on every page, if not every paragraph . Quote
Kidsmum Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 Hi Julie A Short History... sounds really funny . What's Pinky's reasoning behind his choice of the bald one over the fat sister does the book tell you ? I had a quick look on Amazon but they don't have it so i'm guessing it's no longer in print so be sure to hang on to your copy Quote
Devi Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 I've added a A Short History of a Small Place to my wish list. Quote
