Time for a few beers instead !

I'd love a beer, but I've promised myself I will abstain from alcohol this month, in order to boost my weight loss. Sadly, this is the month when the ice hockey worldchampionships are played  What an unfortunate coinkydinky!

Have you tried re-reading a favourite book ? or taking a break from reading for a week or so ? sometimes these help kick start my mojo

Thanks Easy Reader, I tried to start reading The Shadow of the Wind last night, it's on my top 5 books list, but I couldn't get into it. I think I'll try just taking a break. Forcing myself into reading isn't obviously doing the trick and I don't want to feel forced to read something, reading should be enjoyable!

Frankie, I think you should go shopping and buy some books. ;)

I took delivery of 4 books today. Deets in reading thread soon. My reading is still painfully slow these days. I just have no time to read. :( Still, I managed a few pages of Rescuing Patty Hearst today.

I'd love to, but I have no extra money at the moment, I'm saving for some bills I know are coming my way next month, and the gym card. I also need to be saving money for the two weddings I'm attending this summer, and the bachelor party, and what else... I'm going to be so broke! Money worries are definitely a stress factor at the moment, contributing to my lack of concentration when reading books

How's Patty Hearst going?!?

I'm still plugging on with Starmaker by Jay Bernstein. I was hoping to finish it over the weekend, but didn't have chance. I am enjoying it though :)

Popped into a charity shop today and got three books: Rhett Butler's People by Donald McCraig. It's a sequel to Gone With The Wind, but as far as I can tell from the blurb on the back, it's more from Rhett's point of view, than Scarlett's. (EDIT: After further investigation, it appears that this book is the story of Rhett's life up to and during the events of GWTW.)

Also got Santa Evita by Tomas Eloy Martinez. It's a novel, but based around the true life case of Ea Peron's body being stolen by the Argentine Army, after her death. I had a copy years ago, but never got round to reading it, and now have no idea where that book is. So I was pleased to pick up another copy.

Also got 100 Greatest Women in History by Deborah G Felder. It looked like an interesting read.

I think this is going to have to be my next read I think.

I'd put it in my top 5 favourite reads I enjoyed it so much

Had an amazing find in the charity shop today No Name by Wilkie Collins, I had no idea that he'd written anything other than the Woman in White & The Moonstone so it was a real find.

Finished Wicked by Gregory Maguire today, and went to start The Olive Route by Carol Drinkwater until I realised that's the fourth book, not the third, and although I don't think it will matter, I'd rather read them in order. Will swap them over now, and make a start on The Olive Harvest instead!

I've made great progress with Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods over the past two days. I find myself in the midst of chapter 11.

I have found one great disadvantage to reading the book...Must not read in public! I have drawn awkward stares on more than one occasion with my chuckles and titters of amusement. The book really is laugh out loud funny. :giggle2:

I'm reading a new book called Enchantments by Kathryn Harrison which is a story based around the 2 daughters of Rasputin who are invited to live with the Tsar and family after their father's death in the hope that Rasputin's favourite daughter, Masha, can carry on the work that he left off in the healing of the Tsarevich. It's a good concept as they live in their own worlds because the boy is confined to his room so much due to his illness, and she tells him tales of her father which keeps him entertained. My own concern about the book is that a relationship develops between the two which I find uncomfortable seeing as he is just 14 and she is 18 but it's another platform to expose the famous story of which we already know the ending!

Just reading White Cat (curse workers book 1) by Holly Black not bad although there are moments when I am convinced there must have been a book before this as it assumes you know morw. I have the second book Red Glove to read after this as well. Trying to just read library books at the moment as not spending any money.

Only got 18 pages left of Elephants Can Remember - Agatha Christie

was up late last night reading it and read some more again this morning before leaving for work, just waiting for lunchtime so I can finish it (although I bet something happens so I don't get chance to) in case you haven't guessed I am really enjoying it, think I know what happened/who done it.

I read that a while back, pickle, and I felt the same, but all becomes clear by the end!

Going well with The End Specialist. It's an interesting read, with all these negatives about living forever - ie. you can never retire, you will always get your period, you will probably end up divorced, etc. Not things I've ever given much thought to.

I finished it and started the second one straight away, still its a wierd style and a little frustrating when you are sure there is a back story you don't know about. Have you read Red Glove?

I had three books arrive today, but like a couple of others on here, I am going to cut back on my book spending for now. I think I have enough stock for winter! :giggle: I will list the books in my reading blog.

Just back from a lovely holiday - just lots of exploring and dreaming and no reading!

Looking forward to getting back on A Tale of Two Cities.

^No, not yet, but it's on my wishlist for when I'm buying books again :) I thought I had enough revealed by the end of the first one to be satisfying enough though.

I am part way through it as of last night and actually it gets better, I do like Cassel he is a great main character.

Let us not forget the immortal words of Boney M, Sue:

Rah rah Rasputin, lover of the Russian Queen

There was a cat that really was gone ...

Wise words indeed, I think you'll agree.

Ha yes Roland - that basically is what the book was about. I've finished it now, an OK read but not a writer I'll particularly look out for again. One thing I gained from it though is that I think Rasputin just had a bad press and wasn't as mad/bad as people made out.

I've started Devil's Beat now about a case of hysteria in the woods of a Nottinghamshire town in 1910 ...... quite interesting so far.
