  1. I felt exactly the same about this book. The story started off ok, but it turned into a whaling encyclopaedia and this spoilt it entirely for me. I find whaling to be an interesting subject but I'd sooner read it in a reference book and not in the middle of a novel. I'll also give Lord of the Rings a mention. It's a brilliant concept and I love the films, but I have tried to read the books several times and they don't hold my interest. The Catcher in the Rye is the only book I have ever thrown across a room.
  2. I've read three of these: Hundred year old man ... was my favourite book that I read last year. I'd like to see the film adaptation! The Life of Pi I read several years ago, it took a few attempts but I enjoyed it in the end. The Unlikely Pilgrimage was a bit of a let-down for me though.
  3. I just finished reading The Devil Wears Prada. I loved the film but the book didn't have the same effect at all.
  4. I can read anywhere and noise doesn't bother me at all. I like reading on trains and in parks and other places that are always busy. If the TV is on I will often watch a programme and read during the breaks. I'm not a fan of silence.
  5. I do this sometimes. Very often if a book isn't holding my attention I'll skip to the last chapter and read that. If it has a good ending, sometimes I'll skim through the bits I missed out to see how the story played out. More often than not though if I feel the need to skip bits it's a sign I'd be better off reading something else.
  6. I saw an advert for this on TV at the weekend, it's on in the next couple of weeks I think. I will be watching this as I didn't get on well with the book and abandoned it today.
  7. I picked this up from the library today, having read 'The Winter Ghosts' recently and thought it a good read. I've been thinking of reading this for a long while but I think I was put off a little by its hugeness.
  8. My book-buying habits haven't changed at all since I joined this forum - I hardly ever buy books! I prefer to get fiction books from the library. My bookcases are for maps, cookbooks, notebooks and factual stuff.
  9. I avoid romances, especially Mills & Boon. Historical novels - I try reading them every so often but I don't think I've ever finished one Novels written in the present tense Another thing that I don't necessarily avoid, but I've noticed that the more quotes there are inside the cover praising the novel, the less likely I am to get past the first few chapters.
  10. A bacon sandwich (made with toast) and loads of brown sauce.
  11. Chip buttie for me tonight; I've been busy writing and just realised what time it is! It's either that or a pizza and it's too cold and windy to go outside again!
  12. I gave up with this about half way through. I wasn't finding the story that exciting and I didn't like the main character. I'm reading 'Cloud of Sparrows' by Takashi Matsuoka next. Again, another type of book I don't normally read (historical).
  13. thank you for the welcome
  14. Hi there! I joined the forum a few days ago so thought I should introduce myself. I decided to join in as all the book-related discussion here will hopefully encourage me to read (and write) more. I do read a lot, but I'm not very good at finishing books if they don't take my interest straight away. Hence I don't buy many books but I'm a big fan of the library! I read most kinds of book, although I don't get on that well with crime novels but I give them a try every now and again. I've also started properly drafting out a book I've had in mind for a while, and it's taking up a lot of my time at the moment!. It would be good to chat with some like minded people!

  17. I think that will be the next Stephen King book I read; a few people have recommended it
  18. I thought the original one was creepy! I won't be watching the newer one then! I read "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman over the weekend. I thought it was a good light-hearted story, with some interesting characters and it was very imaginative. I'm just about to start "Hunter's Run" by George R R Martin, Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham. I don't read much Sci-fi so I'll see how I get on with it.
  19. Just one. I find if I'm reading one book and start reading another at the same time, it generally means I've lost interest in the first one.
  20. I've just finished rading Salems Lot. I quite enjoyed it and thought it was written very well, but I found it more entertaining than scary. It's the second SK book I've read (I read Needful Things when I was about 15 and enjoyed that aswell) and I'll probably pick up a few more.
  21. I'm from England but moved north of the border 7 years ago.
  22. I have a copy of The Ingoldsby Legends from 1907. It's probably the oldest thing in my house!
  23. This is one of my favourite books. I studied it in A level English and have read it several times since.
