  1. NickB, you guessed correct and win the prize. Here's some cookies for you! :JC_cookies: Sorry, Frankie! Maybe Nick will share with you?

I'm having trouble staying focused on any one book right now. (For some silly reason ;)) But I have read, in no particular order, about half the essays and book reviews in Arguably Essays, by Christopher Hitchens. Was a bit shocked to discover in one I read last night that he seemed to be pro-life as opposed to pro-choice. More than a little odd coming from such a hard core liberal as he was.

Oh, still plodding through the Rushdie book. It's actually better than my slow reading might indicate, but again... Does reading about MS count as literature? :giggle:

Yay :D Of course I will share!

  2. :D So where do you live, then? I'm guessing the UK? We have lots of snow, too, and we're known to have temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius at our worst, but I think our buildings and apartments have better insulation. So I've never had to face being cold inside any place I've lived.

We don't call them provinces in the UK, we call them regions. I'm guessing Canada. :D

  3. How many books a year do you think you roughly read per year?I'm reading Stephen King - On Writing at the moment and he says he reads between 70 - 80 books per year and considers himself a slow reader. It got me thinking how many I read at my current pace I would probably end up between 40 - 50 books. Do some of you really read two books a week? That seems a lot to me!

  4. Christian the lion! Christian the lion! :exc:

    :D

I just searched amazon for this book as I have watched the documentary, which was great. There are two choices though; A Lion Called Christian or Christian the Lion. Are these the same book with different titles? Christian the Lion was published 2009, and A Lion Called Christian 2010.

  5. I do some Heavy Intensity Interval Training on the cycling machines at the gym. I know that's not the same but I enjoy it regardless and it has definitely helped my cardio fitness. I have done some cycling in the past, but I always get frustrated at flat tires and end up stopping.

  6. Just out of curiosity, why is keeping a Leopard Ratsnake a pain? What's the difference?

Awwwww, Chester is a real darling! :smile2:

Well, some species of snake are prone to going off food in captivity. In this country we always try to feed snakes on pre-killed defrosted rodents. Leopard Ratsnakes are a species that are prone to going off food for some time, for the most part it doesn't do them any harm. Some snakes can go over a year without losing much condition. However it is of course a little worrying. When I was keeping mine, my female was a great feeder but the male did have one spell of refusing to feed. Although I found a trick to get him to feed (which is often the way, you have to find what makes the individual's feeding response trigger) which for this individual was sticking him in a dark box with a mouse (dead) and taking him for a drive. People think this activates the gut flora when a snake hasn't eaten in a while due to the vibrations, I don't know but it works!

They're also quite a shy species, which isn't a pain lots of shy species are very popular. It's just a little boring, I like active snakes which you see exploring etc. regularly.

Perhaps the thread tite can encompass the contents - Pets (including piccies of snakes).

They are gorgeous Nick, athough the last photo from Paignton Zoo made me think of Harry Potter! :giggle2:

Hehehe Nagini in the films was a reticulated python, I haven't read the books though.

Wordsgood - All I can say is wow! Had me chuckling into my coffee this morning. Have you ever tried your hand at writing? :)

Nick - My son loves snakes. I can admire how beautiful some of them are - but cannot really feel I want to cuddle them :) They are really beautiful though.

Hahaha no, they're not cuddly animals!

  7. Oh, I'd have to name them all! We have a cat too but it's my Mum that's the sticking point! :D

Hehehe, a lot of people have this problem!I post on a reptile forum too and you quite often get people posting with the mum dilemma hahaha

Maybe your Mum needs a bit of house-training... :giggle: Only joking! I'm terrified of snakes too, I can imagine your getting one would stop her coming over. And I don't even want to think about your dogs having to socialize with a snakey-pakey...

The dogs are more of a risk to the snakes than the other way around, the only time this might reverse is with the venomous snakes (you have to be licensed to own in this country) or the giant snakes. Burmese Pythons, Reticulated Pythons, Green or Yellow Anacondas, Indian or African rock pythons and perhaps large boa constrictors if it was a smaller breed dog. Lots of snake owners have dogs though, and it's quite hard to lose a 13 - 19ft snake if you do keep the giants! So you don't have many escapes. I personally prefer the smaller species though, with my boa being the largest I keep. My snakes range from under 2ft - 5.5ft.

Here are a pair of Leopard Ratsnakes I used to own. In my opinion they are one of the most beautiful snakes on the planet. A bit of a pain to keep though.

My more conventional pet and best friend, Chester.

and to show you a giant snake. This snake isn't mine, photo was taken at Paignton Zoo. The snake is roughly 14-15ft, an African Rock Python and a bit of a chubby one too!

  8. She's beautiful Nick, I love snakes but my Mum is terrified and would refuse to visit if I had one, I'm not sure what the dogs would think either! :). Does she have a name?

I have a dog and have dogs to stay. They don't tend to pay any attention to them, cats on the other hand will sit and watch them which can be a bit of a pain. She doesn't have a name, I have and have had lots of snakes and I just gave up giving them names. Here are some more...

Infact I do lie, this is my only named snake. Casper.

It won't let me post all of my photos, that's a shame.. I'll have to keep adding them to this thread gradually :/

  10. .

Um...By that I hope by that you don't mean the cats downsized for you?

Aside from that, welcome aboard fellow animal slave...er, lover I mean. Yes, that's what I meant. :giggle2:

Lol, no although I'm sure they would love to. As would my boa constrictor love to downsize my number of cats!Hehehe.

  11. Herpetocultute (Keeping reptiles, more specifically in terms of myself snakes)

Dog Training (I'm doing a degree in canine behaviour but I've been dog training for a fair few years now)

    Fitness

    Hip Hop

I also follow The Mentalist (TV Series) pretty religiously but I don't know if I would describe that as a hobby.

  12. I recently read War Horse and I don't know if I will bother with the sequel. It seems like a book for the money riding off the success of the original book. I don't see why there was any need for a sequel. Having said that I think it's unfair to judge the book before I've read it.

I've only ever read two major series (shock horror I know) and they both came highly recommended to me, by my now brother in law who has similar reading tastes. Hunger games and Game of thrones will be my next two, but as odd as this will sound, it never really occurred to me to read a series until I had met my now brother in law.

The game of thrones series is on my wish-list. It seems to have a lot of followers so it's got me curious!

  13. I've figured out how now, here is the ending if you did want reminding...

Michael ( the child, main character) sends a bottle with a message that he is still alive out to sea. Kensuke finds out he did this and is sad for a period of time. He then agrees to let Michael go if a boat comes. Michael's parents come and Kensuke makes Michael promise not to tell anyone about him for 10 years so noone comes to kill the wildlife on the island. Michael was split about whether to leave throughout as he had became like a son to Kensuke and vice versa.
