  1. I prefer physical bookshops - especially my favourite used-books-store in my home-town. But living where I do now, with no book-stores anywhere nearby - I'm grateful for the online book-stores. I'd be quite lost without them.
  2. Inver, what went wrong with I Capture The Castle ? I've been wanting to read this for a while - and have only heard good things about it.
  3. Sounds wonderful, Chrissy, meeting after 16 years - it must be so exciting! In my news, I'm getting ready to take a month-long holiday at mum's in the city - looking forward to meeting old friends, gawking at new shops (staying in the rural sections - makes the occasional city trips so exciting), and visiting my favourite (used)book-store. And NO cooking.

    Hello

Hello Emmy, and welcome! I discovered Christie around 13 too - and still re-read her books. I'm sure you'll fit right in.
  5. Thanks frankie. I'm half way in and its been fun - it had been a while since I'd read romance... How are you finding Mister God This Is Anna ?
  6. Completed Kim. The India that unfolds in the pages was one my grandfather experienced as a boy, - so it was lovely for me to read about it. And the book has a lot of Buddhist thoughts sprinkled with those of Islam - and this made it very interesting for me, as I've mostly been exposed to Hinduism and Christianity. Some of swear phrases were literal translations from Indian languages and these made me chuckle (son-of-an-owl / son-of-a-pig) But most of all I think it was Kim who captivated me. Kimball O'Hara may be one of the more interesting people I've met in a book. Have started on Pride and Prejudice - my first unabridged Austen
  7. A typical south-Indian breakfast for me : Dosa and coconut chutney
  8. Agree. Some of my fav films from books are : The Godfather, Jaws, and The Lord of the Rings
  9. I like your list of favourites, Robin. Glad you're settling in well I just looked her up - loved her picture on wikipedia - and her books sound lovely!
  10. The Hobbit is delicious, isn't it? (so much easier to re-read than The Lord of The Rings) And how are you enjoying your Kindle, poppy? (I haven't seen one, is it similar to reading PDFs on the computer?)
  11. Watched The Princess Bride last night, Had the DVD with me for a while now, and had forgotten about it! Reading about it in the other threadreminded me - and I agree with everyone there - it was delightful. Also watched The Secrets of NIMH this afternoon - I think it was chesilbeach who told me about it when I was reading Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. The film had lots of "magic" elements introduced (which the book doesn't have), and it wasn't as amazing as the book was. But nonetheless, as an animated film from the 80s - seen on its own - it had its merits and was enjoyable. Thank you chesilbeach!
  12. The Dark Is Rising ~ Susan Cooper
  13. Hello again Robin! I like the books by Ezra Jack Keats, and some the ones that poppy already mentioned : AA Milne, Dr Seuss, Eric Carle, Leo Lionni, Eric Hill.
  14. You're a more sincere reader than me, chesil!
  15. Laura, I liked reading your thoughts on this. I read this as a teenager - shamelessly skimming over the entire war bit - I think I'll read it again now. Your reviews have a way of doing this to me And vodkafan, I second Laura's 5 on 5 rating, you should give this a go.
  16. Hello Robin and welcome! I'm enjoy looking at picture books with my almost-2-year-old. What kind of books do you like reading? And which are your favourite picture books?
  17. Such intricate work pickle - amazing! You're very talented.
