  1. I'm glad you were pleased with this one, Mac . I loved it, although I must confess I didn't notice the Americanisms - go figure! It almost felt to me like Kostova is a painter herself. She was so familiar with the birth of a painting and the feelings an artist has for their own art and others.
  2. I'm a big Matthew Pearl fan, Mexicola, so I would highly recommend it! 'The Dante Club' is my favorite of his, but 'The Last Dickens' is still superb .
  3. I'm glad you're enjoying it! It's a big book though so I can see how switching between that and something more bag-friendly is a good idea . I've read it a few times, and honestly I think the first time took me about 2 months at least. It's a lot of story packed in there! Good luck . Oh, and I loved Great Expectations! I don't remember, have you read Matthew Pearl's 'The Last Dickens?' You might be interested in it since it's historical fiction about Charles Dickens and his book tour he went on in the US and the UK (amoung other things).
  4. Are you still reading Monte Cristo, Mexicola, or did I miss you finishing it and your thoughts? I hope you liked!
  5. Mostly my mom, since she stayed home with us while dad worked. We went to the library once a week without fail for storytime and checkings-out of books, and she was always encouraging me to look things up in our set of encyclopaedias whenever I asked a question. My favorite books that my parents read to me when I was little was my set of Dr. Seuss stories .
  6. Baseball . The Twins are barely ahead right now 2-1 over the Phillies. Go Twins!
  7. I have about 100 pages left of The World to Come, so I'm hoping to finish today. It might take me longer though, as all of a sudden I'm a bit confused! It's embarassing, really, but it's like I turned a corner this morning and read something that I was absolutely clueless about! I might have to back-track a bit...
  8. Rolling in on a Burning Tire - The Dead Weather
  9. Sinister Kid - The Black Keys
  10. Aww one of my faves, Kylie! Such good musical numbers in that one. I can never get tired of hearing Bing and Grace sing 'True Love' and of course anything else with Sinatra. I've got Saturday Night Live on in the background but I'm about to turn it off. I really don't know why I give this show so many chances...
  11. We went out for Greek before hitting the festival today, so I had lots of yummy spanikopita and koupepia! So delish .
  12. TJ's chive crackers and hummus. Mmmm .
  13. I watched the first disc of season 1 of Bones, so the first 4 episodes I think . I'll send it back to Netflix today and will hopefully receive the next disc on Tuesday...
  14. I met my friend for a late lunch today, and was just munching a bit on the leftovers - fish tacos! Yum .
  15. Just finished watching the season 1 pilot episode of Bones, and am about to start the next ep on the disc . It's neat to see how the whole thing started!
  16. I've only read the first two books Charm, and I thought the show was loads better. I'd still like to read the rest of the books though if I can find used copies. Love the show!
  17. Giving up the Gun - Vampire Weekend
  18. It has gotten better and better, Stephanie, I agree! I love the show . We'll have to discuss then after the finale. It's pretty nail-biting!
  19. I dug some veggie egg rolls out of my freezer tonight for dinner. My cupboards are close to bare! Thank goodness tomorrow is shopping day, because those egg rolls were grody!
  20. I read more of The World to Come tonight after work when I got home. I was afraid to turn on my computer since it was thundering and lightning (nasty power surges) so I'm just about halfway finished now. Still love it!
  21. Are new shows of VD still airing for you guys in the UK? I just wondered what you all thought of the season finale (and the rest of it for that matter). Also, I discovered that one of my fave bands that I've been so obsessed with lately actually had a song in one of the eps! I think it was the episode called 'Bloodlines,' and I can't believe I missed it when it first aired!
  22. Sinister Kid - The Black Keys
  23. Breakfast! Scrambled egg (my last one, it's good I'm going shopping tomorrow ) and some toasted sourdough.
  24. Working my way through The World to Come and finding it really fascinating. It's shifting between the early 1900's and present day, the common thread being Marc Chagall .
