  1. Just like when your favorite guitar player leaves their band that they've been with almost since the beginning to 'go another musical direction,' Ned. I'm talking to you Fru!
  2. Headed out for a work happy hour tonight, so methinks I'll have a bunch of appetizers! Calamari, lettuce wraps, yum .
  3. Acceptable Risk by Robin Cooke Synopsis via Barnes & Noble: When neuroscientist Edward Armstrong begins dating Kimberly Stewart, a descendant of a woman who was hanged as a witch at the time of the Salem witch trials, he takes advantage of the opportunity to delve into a pet theory: that the "devil" in Salem in 1692 had been a hallucinogenic drug inadvertently consumed with mold-tainted grain. In an attempt to prove his theory, Edward grows the mold he believes responsible from samples taken from the Stewart estate. In a brilliant designer-drug transformation, the poison becomes Ultra, the next generation of antidepressants with truly startling therapeutic capabilities. Acceptable Risk is a story of quest: a researcher's quest for the ultimate drug and a woman's quest for self-understanding. Unbeknownst to either person, the two seemingly separate quests collide with devastating consequences. I had this book recommended to me because of the subject matter having to do with the Salem witch trials, and from that standpoint I loved it. The rest of it however left far too much to be desired! I haven
  4. Excellent review, Mac! I've never read a Murakami (I know, for shame) and have had this one recommended to me as a first-read. I'm looking forward to it!
  5. I wasn't really a fan of 27 Dresses, Kylie, so I vote for True Blood! The only thing I planned on turning the TV on tonight for was CSI: New York. Gotta love Gary Sinise!
  6. Your reviews are always so excellent, Chesil! Would you be interested in ghost-writing mine?! I pay in coffee . I've added to my wish list the Carbon Diaries and Three Men in a Boat (and the Armstrong of course!), and I loved your review of Bel-Ami! I agree with you completely about what you said in the spoiler, and am interested to see how they portray the story on film.
  7. I finished Acceptable Risk by Robin Cooke last night, and read the prologue of Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong this morning . I ended up not being as annoyed as I started out whilst reading Acceptable Risk, so I was glad it didn't end up being a complete waste of time. I'll try to collect my thoughts and post my review before I leave work today, since my internet is acting up at home .
  8. Great to hear, Lilywhite! Can't wait until the book gets to me .
  9. Glad you enjoyed Bel-Ami, Chesil! Are you excited for the film? I have about 75 pages left of 'Unacceptable Risk' and boy am I glad about that! I think I might pay money to be able to slap some sense into these main characters .
  10. Sounds like an interesting read on the Vikings. My gr-grandfather came over from Norway so I've always been interested in his background. I didn't get much reading in of 'Acceptable Risk' over the weekend, but I'm a little over halfway finished. Tbh I'm kind of bothered because I really don't like the main characters for some reason! Both the man and woman seem so wimpy that I'm finding it really hard to enjoy it. I love the subject matter, but I just want to scream at the characters!
  11. I've never had any personal expriences, Denise, but I have family and friends that have. There's most likely a rational explanation for what you heard, but you never know! I'm kind of skeptical, but would love to see something with my own eyes.
  12. Just returned from a run to 1/2 Price Books, and came home with Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong and The Family Tree by Carole Cadwalladr. Oh, and also got a DVD of one of my fave thrillers, The Others .
  13. Tonight we're headed out for dinner at a local Italian place. I'm going to try my hardest not to have what I had last time (parmesan-crusted Sole) so I can have sometime new! Can't wait .
  14. Well wtg to you for finishing it during that time! Probably would've taken me half a year...
  15. It's so exciting, Chesil!! The trailer makes me want it to be 30 June tomorrow! Great news, Fi. Yes I'd heard the 8th of June thrown out as well for a release date of the soundtrack. I want to know who'll be on it, darn it! Hopefully they'll let us in on the big secret soon. I liked RP in 'Remember Me,' but for the most part disliked the film itself. Oh well!
  16. Have you read the Armstrong series before, Lexie? How long did it take you to read Under the Dome, Ned? The thing's a behemoth! I read a bit more of 'Acceptable Risk' this morning in bed, and to tell you the truth I had to go back to almost the beginning because I forgot what was going on! Oops. I'm liking it so far though.
  17. Last night we watched two horrid pieces of filmmaking, '2012' and 'Ice Twisters.'
  18. A Lebanese feast! We're making meat pies, kibbeh, stuffed grape leaves, babaghanoush and tabbouleh. Good times .
  19. Ooh wtg, Frankie! Yes, I did have quite a laugh at this one, and am definitely looking forward to seeing The Neck in period clothing (I'm so shallow sometimes ). I hope you get a kick out of this book as much as I did! All in all an excellent sounding haul! Especially if they were so reasonably priced. I approve .
  20. Starbucks latte and a banana
  21. Yes! A good source of fiber and vitamin D . Tomorrow night I'm headed out to eat at the Indian place though so I'm looking forward to it!
  22. I know . I got off work late though and headed straight into traffic to visit my mom at the hospital, and I wasn't up for eating vending machine food! I normally never miss a chance to eat though, believe me!
  23. Yeah, Mr. Willis was pretty smart, Stephanie! It was interesting to watch too since we're now in the middle of taking the 2010 census here in the US. It's very educational! I love the episode 'The Supremes!' There are so many good arguments in it, and I especially love seeing Glenn Close and the other guy being appointed go back and forth with all their constitutional knowledge. I love too how excited the Senior Staff get at having these two on the bench .
  24. Being that I just walked in the door at 9pm therefore missing dinner, I just polished off a bowl of cornflakes .
  25. Welcome to BCF, haggard_hannah! Do you have any favorite reading genres and/or authors?
