A Land More Kind Than Home - Wiley Cash It seems this one has been on my Kindle a l - o -n - g time ,so I thought I'd give it a go . It turned out to be a surprisingly quick read . Started it yesterday and finished it today . It's a story set in NC and leans heavily on the old time snake handling churches. I guess I shouldn't call them old time ,as there still are some out there . Anyhow, the belief was that if your Faith was strong enough you could pick up a serpent and wouldn't be harmed if bitten . This church happened to be run by one of the charismatic, powerful sorts of men who have a hold over people and can convince them to do things they normally wouldn't have done, but as time goes on, and he gains more control they seem to lose theirs . The story is told by 3 people's viewpoints ,so you get bits and pieces of each one ,all building up to a sermon that goes too far and the horrible consequences that everyone is left to deal with . A very well told story ! I 'll give this one a 4 . .

Hi folks Long time , no post, huh ? Thank you SO much to everyone who came looking for me and sorry for the MIA once again. As most of you know by now, when I disappear for long stretches, usually something has come up to knock me down . This time is like all the others . The main problem started with the car we bought last summer that broke right after we got it . To make a long and really boring story short, we had it in THREE garages for TWO months and the bill was STAGGERING ,only to get it back and be told to "unload it " as quickly as possible because it had other problems that would also be big money. We ended up selling it at a huge loss, but the guy who bought it was told in detail ( plus given all paperwork from the repair bills ) , so it's not like we sold him a pig in a poke . He has a best friend who repairs VW's ,so my guess is their friendship will be needed ! We then bought another used car which has been great and runs well . On the health front, I ended up in ER last weekend . After multiple tests this week, I have pneumonia , and a kidney stone . (which is currently not causing any blockage so they are leaving it alone for now ) I had pneumonia last year , but the doc says she thinks they caught this earlier and are trying to treat me at home, hoping to keep me out of the hospital . Tomorrow I will start round 2 of the antibiotics . On the Reading front, I have virtually come to a standstill on that , other than to just finish up this little gem : It was a nostalgic look back at all the decorations, toys, candy, foods ,tv shows and music during my growing up years and brought back lots of good memories . Hoping to keep up in here more lately and read up on what everyone else is up to . Thanks again for all your posts , Very nice of you ! I hope you are all well yourselves .
  10. This will really date me, but Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was published the year I was born ! I also have, but haven't read , Warlock by Oakley Hall ,which was also published the same year . So far, I believe I'm winning ( or losing ) for oldest on the list .
  11. I've never written in a book or highlighted . It bothers me to read a book that someone else has done this to . Maybe underlined certain parts or some such thing. It really distracts me from the book if I'm paying attention to what someone else noted .
  12. I never pay attention to where an author is from before reading a book .Sometimes after I read one that I really enjoy, I'll look up more about the author in case I want to find other books by them .
  13. I only read one book at a time . I guess I have a one-track mind, or I like to keep organized and if I am reading several books at once, I can't remember what is happening in each story at the same time .
  14. I thought I'd go through some of the older posts and bump them back up onto the board. Maybe it'll get some responses going . As for the title it's usually really important to me when I'm choosing a book . I like it to be something that makes me wonder what the book is about ,so if the title is different in some way, it tends to catch my attention . A couple that I really thought were funny, but didn't read either : Are You Hungry Tonight ? ( A cookbook with Elvis' favorite recipes ) I Still Miss My Man, But My Aim is Getting Better
  15. Hope your new computer arrives soon . You sure can get addicted to these things ,can't you ?
  16. Kate I agree , you have such a varied list of books . Never know what you will come up with next !
  17. Great that you enjoyed your trip so much ,but sorry you hurt your foot or ankle . At least it didn't stop you from doing the things you had on your list ! Good for you . Also glad you enjoyed 11-22-63 . I thought it was a pretty doggone good story too !
  18. Great news on the Vit. D ! Now are you on pills or shots for the Vit B or just told to eat foods that have it ? The pups are getting cuter every day. I like the one with the black racing stripe down his back. Very neat ! What type dogs did you say they are ? I like the challenge you listed. Those are best, the ones that have several books that would qualify. That way you aren't locked into reading one specific book !

Hi guys Thanks for the well wishes . Will update after Friday's Dr apt . As for the car situation, believe it or not, we have never been shafted by a car repairman before. We always take our car to a little place here in town and the guy is very honest and does good work. He tried fixing this one, but said right up front that he didn't know much about these cars so might not be able to repair it , These other guys were crooks in every single area. As old as I am, you'd think I'd behave myself better, but I was SO angry at them Friday , I called them everything but a Milk Cow and cussed worse than a drunken sailor. I think they deserved it though .

Hi gang I'm back . Been stopping in to read posts here and there ,but haven't been much replying to any of them lately . The therapy is going well and the knee is "almost " where it needs to be . Dr apt this coming Friday so I'm hoping he will say good enough and leave it alone . 8 weeks of therapy and I've had enough . My new (used) car broke 3 weeks after getting it, so it's been a fiasco trying to get it repaired. I think we took it to a bunch of SCHEISTERS who gave me a line of crap regarding it . I'm assuming most ladies are like me and know very little about car engines, etc . but even I picked up on some of their lines. They tried to tell me that I wasn't driving it properly and that a car like mine is not meant to drive to the grocery store at 35 mph once a week, it's meant to take out on the highway and FLOOR IT . ( apparently it can go pretty fast, but I drive like an old lady and never go over 50 .) My husband told me they were just telling me that and it's not true ,and I've only had the car 3 weeks before it broke ,so I doubt my little old lady driving is what broke it . To make a long story short, they had the car 9 days, refused to give me a loaner car ,so I had to rent one ( A LOT OF MONEY for 9 days ) ,then they told me Friday that they put some parts on, it didn't fix it and they wanted to put MORE parts on. Seeing that our bill was already over ONE THOUSAND BUCKS , and that it needed FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE WORK . I told them give me the keys, I will take it home . It's drive-able but still broken ,so we are dropping it off tonite at a local guy who works on this brand of car . He said that the dealer where I took it was a crook and that none of the things they mentioned were broken . He also advised me to stop payment on the check, which I did. Not sure if that was a wise idea . I'll log on from the Jail Library if I can and let you know . Anyhow, on the Reading Front, I've finished a few more books --will list them below and on my 1st post ,with just the ratings beside them . Any questions just ask I hope you are all doing well, healthy and happy and finding lots of good books to read ! Read since last post : 29-Every Day is a Holiday - George Mahood 4/5 30-The Tale of Halcyon Crane -1/5 31- Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey - 4/5 32-The Skeleton Crew - Deborah Halber 2/5 33-Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea - Morgan Callan Rogers 6/5 (Best of the year ) 34 -We Are All welcome Here- Elizabeth Berg 2/5 35 -The Visitors - Sally Beauman 4/5 (Very much like Jane Harris if you like her books ) 36 -That Bear Ate My Pants - Tony James Slater 4/5 ( SO FUNNY) 37 -Shadow on the ill ;The True Story of a 1925 Kansas Murder - 3/5 38 -Deaths on Pleasant Street - Giles Fowler 3/5
  21. A belated Happy Birthday , Devi ! Your cakes looked delicious , your presents looked really neat, and I love your new baby pups. Are you selling all of them or going to try to keep any ? I'm glad the Kindle is working well for you to read your heavy books on . Hope you get rested up soon from your busy day !

Hi folks Sorry for the MIA . Things have not been very good here . I had an allergic reaction to the heparin I was taking post-surgery which ended up in a trip to ER and my Dr, who put me on 2 meds to counteract that . Those made me really ill, so I have been sick as a dog from them . I am done taking those and seem to be improving from that. Had my one month checkup Thursday and my knee is not straightening properly. The Dr moved my therapy to his office ,so I have 2 weeks to get it to straighten. If not, I will be re-admitted to the hospital , put in surgery to have my knee manipulated, which means he has to break loose the tendons and muscles in the back of my knee so it will straighten, then it's back to more therapy . Sorry I haven't responded sooner. Just really discouraged right now . Thanks to those who have checked in to inquire .
  23. I haven't ridden a bike since bellbottoms were in style, so I can't see me doing it now ! The Husband takes our grandson sometimes ad goes on the bike path . when our other grandkids are in town, he will take one of them at a time .(there are 6 ,so he wouldnt be able to keep track of them all at once ). He also takes them fishing but makes their parents go. He can't help them fish and keep track of the others so he won't have to FISH them out of the lake . We aren't used to keeping track of that many kids at one time .
