  1. I used to just pick what I felt like at the time, but as a result a lot of books tended to linger around unread as I seemed to go for more recently purchased ones. Now I've decided to do a reading plan of 6 - 7 books at a time, and stick with it. I thought I would find it too restrictive, but it actually takes the stress out of trying to pick the next book (and yes, I do get stressed over it, silly as it sounds :P ).

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about Honey; it sounds like you did the right thing and that she had a great life. :console:

They really aren't with us long enough, are they? Lovely photo of a lovely doggy, and I like the idea of the paw print as well.

  3. I hate spiders. I don't kill them though, and try to remove them with a glass and bit of cardboard. They just freak me out. They have too many legs, and their legs are all spindly. Ugh, makes me feel funny just thinking of them. :hide:

  4. Great review of The Shock Doctrine. I've had it on my shelf for a few years now, after very much enjoying No Logo (which may be a wee bit dated now). I did attempt it a couple of years ago, but put it aside for something 'lighter'. I shall be sure to pick it up in the near future though, as it sounds well worth a read for anyone interested in the state of the world today.

  5. Is he on steroids BB?  They make them soooo hungry!  If not maybe it's boredom.. Maybe you could hide treats and make a game of it, stuff a kong, or use a treat ball if you have one? Poor Reuben, he won't understand why he can't have a good run. :)

He's not on steroids; he seems to have settled down, hungerwise. I mean he still begs regularly (he's a lab after all :giggle2: ), but he's not frantically hungry like he was after he was ill. He had his stitches out on Wednesday, and we took him straight out for a run through the woods. He got bullied by another dog, but lucky it was muzzled, so no harm done, though he was a bit nervous around other dogs he met later on. :banghead:  He's been for a run on the beach today, and this evening he had another run in the woods. He's zonked out on the floor now, bless him. Oh, and he's still trying to hump the odd pillow, so I guess the neutering doesn't have any effect on that. :giggle2:

All the best for Honey and Mabel. All my digits are crossed for them both.   Re: Mabel, you may need to find the right kind of food to settle her stomach - trial and error.

  6. I'm about 25% through The Crimson Petal and the White. I wish I had more time to read but I'm up to my eyeballs in studying at the moment. :banghead:  Still, I manage to get about 30 minutes a night of reading so that's pretty good. I'd probably get more time if only I could drag myself away from the internet.

  7. I'm so glad to hear she's made an improvement! :boogie: I've never heard of vestibular disease; I shall have to google it.

Reuben is pretty much back to normal but his appetite seems to have shot through the roof. I wonder if it's because he went without food for a day and a half. He's certainly eaten enough since then to make up for it, so I don't know where this hunger has come from. It can't be from the neutering can it?? Or maybe he's just antsy because he hasn't had a proper run, and it's translating itself via food? He's constantly begging and running to his food bowl. He's outrageous!

  8. Oh no, Chalie I'm so sorry to hear about Honey. :( How is she this morning? I agree with your mantra, though it doesn't make it any easier. All you can do is be with her, and make sure she is as comfortable as she can be.  Their time with us is too short, so I always try to take comfort in the thought that I have given them the best life they could have possibly had. Please keep us updated with how she goes today. :friends0:

  9. The Rats - James Herbert

Given the recent passing of James Herbert, I thought I’d bump this up my list as it’s often referred to as one of his most popular books.

Set in London, the city is suddenly being over run by super-sized black rats, attacking and eating it’s inhabitants.

It was a pretty quick read and I finished it in a few days. I didn’t find it particularly scary, but I’ve never had a phobia about rats like some people do (now if it had been about spiders it would be different thing entirely). It was quite dated, which I found a bit distracting from the story. It was a bit over the top but I often find the horror genre is not one to be understated.

I thought the idea of using the puppies as bait a bit distasteful, but I think that was the point.

There are two sequels and I shall read them eventually but I won’t rush to get to them.
