  1. I'm not sure why it felt like such a slog, it wasn't that it was uninteresting or that the writing wasn't quality. It is of course pretty bleak but I've read bleaker books with more enjoyment. I'm thinking that it probably came at the wrong time for me .. perhaps I needed to concentrate more. It ticks along quite slowly and builds but I couldn't seem to sustain interest. 3/5

You've summed up the same reason I didn't like Brick Lane. I just couldn't stay interested even though the blurb suggested it had everything that I would enjoy. I never ended up finishing it - it was just such a struggle!

  2. Updated reading plan:

    Hyperion - Dan Simmons

While We're Far Apart - Lynn Austin

The Sisters Brothers - Patrick DeWitt

    Safe House - Chris Ewen
    Plague - Lisa C Hinsley

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 - Sue Townsend

The World's Greatest Idea - John Farndon - currently reading

    Megacatastrophes! - David Darling & Dirk Schulze-Makuch

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry - Rachel Joyce

World War Z - Max Brooks

Born Liars: Why We Can't Live Without Deceit - Ian Leslie

  3. Was this your first time reading Adrian Mole? I would recommend the whole series. Great stuff, and can be read time and a time again :smile2:

I read it when I was an early teenager myself, and didn't like it or understand it. But reading it now as an adult, I enjoyed it and 'got it'. Aside from describing people in their 30's as old ( :Tantrum: ) it was great! :P

  4. I have The Lady & the Unicorn & Remarkable Creatures on my TBR pile as well so i hope they come out on the enjoyable side rather than the mediocre one  :D

I haven't read The Lady and the Unicorn, but I did enjoy Remarkable Creatures.

  5. I like the two Tracey Chevalier books I have read, so hopefully Falling Angels will be just as good. From the sound of things, it will be!

I'd like to hear what you think of The Long Song, when you get around to it. I really enjoyed Small Island and Never Far from Nowhere.

  6. Nice review, Tunn. I agree with you that there were questions unanswered. I would have liked to read more about what happened from a more wholesome/global point of view, rather than bits and pieces here and there. I definitely preferred the interviews with the civilians rather than military personnel. The military ones in my mind all started to sound alike.

  7. I have periods where I love to cook and try new recipes, but usually I stick to our routine meal plan. It's just easier for shopping and planning. Occasionally though, something will catch my fancy or they will talk about something at work and I'll give it a go. But for the most part, I tend to stick with what I know (which isn't a great deal :D ).
