  1. I haven't read Speaker for the Dead but I've read The Book Thief a couple of times and loved it. I have a pretty wide range of genres I read, but I generally tend to avoid chick-lit and fantasy, though I have read and enjoyed some of those as well. I'll basically try anything with a decent storyline.
  2. Guess you didn't like it then? I won't be downloading it, even if it is free!
  3. I've also heard of The Water Babies. My parents had a copy when I was a child but I have never read it.
  4. Having just finished this one, I have to second this recommendation.
  5. Hi there. Welcome to the forum! What kind of books do you like to read?
  6. Wow - that looks amazing. Must be quite incredible to see it in person!
  7. August already - terrifying! Still reading While We're Far Apart (for some reason, I can never remember the title. Everytime I comment on it, I have to check what it's called ). I wish it would get a move on already!
  8. I look forward to hearing what you think of The Death of Grass. It's been on my wishlist for a while, but unfortunately my library doesn't stock it and it's not available on Kindle. I attempted Brave New World many years ago (I was still a teenager, or probably just out of my teens) but didn't really 'get it'. I mean to read it again at some point as it is such a talked about book, that it must be worth reading!
  9. Welcome to the August Reading Circle. This month we are discussing Summer by Edith Wharton. It is assumed that you have read the book before reading posts in this thread, as the discussion might give away crucial points, and the continuous use of spoiler tags might hinder fluent reading of posts. Here are some questions below which will hopefully aid in the discussion. Who was your favourite character? Who was your least favourite character? Was there a particular part you enjoyed more than the rest? Was this the first book you've read in this genre/ by this author, has it encouraged you to read more? Were there any parts/ideas you struggled with? Overall, was reading the book an enjoyable experience? How has Charity changed (come of age) throughout the novel? What were Harley's intentions? Did he have feelings for Charity, or was he simply using her? Were Royall's intentions purely honorable? How do you feel about the ending? Did Charity make the right decision? Hopefully these questions will fuel some discussions. You are more than welcome to add your own. May the discussions begin!
  10. While We're Apart is moving a bit too slow for my liking. The story itself is interesting, it's just that things seem to move at a snail's pace.
  11. Chicken Goujons with guacamole. It's my "can't be bothered" lunch.
  12. John Sandford has written quite a few books in the 'Prey' series. Many years ago, my friend and I were really into those books and were constantly keeping an eye out for any in the series. They are a pretty easy read though, not too complex and quite fast paced, if I recall.
  13. Awww, bless her....I just want to kiss that button nose!
  14. Hi there, and welcome to the forum!

    Hi.

Hello and welcome to the forum! That's some heavy reading you have on your wishlist there.
  16. I've added The Shrinking Man to my wishlist. Shame it's not available on Kindle yet. I'm surprised I haven't read it before as the title is so familiar to me. Maybe I have heard it mentioned a lot previously - I suppose it's a sort of classic, isn't it?
  17. I plan on reading Walden on Wheels over the next month or so. I like the idea of getting away from this spend-spend-spend mentality that seems to pervade everything. Even if you try to be frugal, it's so easy to fritter money away on something that you don't really need. It will be good to read his insights and hopefully it will help put things in perspective about necessary v. luxury spending.
  18. Still re-watching The Walking Dead.
  19. Ella Minnow Pea is a very unique and clever book. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it.
  20. I've just bought a few. My TBR list is supposed to be getting smaller!!!
  21. Thanks all for the congrats and sorry for my tardy replies! I must check this thread more often! Good luck for the new job. It's always daunting starting at a new place but I'm sure you'll be fine.

    Cars

I currently drive a poxy little 1.0L Toyota Yaris. It's too small for anything (dog, shopping, etc) but it's cheap and reliable. My dream cars are pretty tame, considering I'm not really a 'car person'. It would be either a 3 door Suzuki Grand Vitara, or a VW Sirocco.
  23. Awesome Athena!! I hope you enjoy it. Have you played any of the Animal Crossing games before?
  24. New Reading Plan: While We're Far Apart - Lynn Austin Origin - Randolph Lalonde Chicken, Mules, and Two Old Fools - Victoria Twead The Tommyknockers – Stephen King The Crime of Julian Wells - Thomas H Cook A Long Way Down - Nick Hornby The Snow Child - Eowyn Ivey The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price, Purveyor of Superior Funerals - Wendy Jones The Etymologicon: A Circular Scroll through the Hidden Connections of the English Language - Mark Forsyth Where'd You Go, Bernadette - Maria Semple Walden on Wheels: On The Open Road From Debt To Freedom - Ken Ilgunas The World's Greatest Idea - John Farndon - currently reading Megacatastrophes! - David Darling & Dirk Schulze-Makuch - currently reading Born Liars: Why We Can't Live Without Deceit - Ian Leslie There are a few there from my 2011-and-earlier list, which will be good to read. The Tommyknockers is a re-read. I don't particularly want to re-read books when I have so many unread ones on my pile, but I fancy some old-school King and this is one that I can't remember too much about.
