My book activity today consists of reading notes for biology this morning and then the very thrilling Cemistry: The Central Science in the afternoon. Spectacular writing, so very much fun to read!...

Does predictibility spoil a book for you?
Skírnir replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
My thoughts exactly. -
Oh we'll try our best! The real question is whether the other, bigger volcanoes will be "triggered" by the one erupting now and go off soon... I hope not.

Nice review, it's definitely on my TBR list now!

Nice! Have you been here before? And where do you plan to be travelling? Surely not the southern areas? I warn you, my sister lives there and everything's so covered up in ash right now that they're evacuating animals who are becoming burned under their own skin because of the fluorine in the ash. It's not a very desirable place to be backpacking either, as they all have to wear glasses and masks over their faces... I see you mentioned Skaftafell though, I hope that's far enough - The scenery is beautiful, I can imagine it'd be fun walking the routes there. However, there have been a lot of earthquakes in the biggest volcano here this week under Vatnaj

H.G. Wells -
Ah thanks! I could google him now and I see that he was on Lost too - which is probably where I know the face from. Have been wondering that for a while though.

A Fantasy book for a psychopath girl...
Skírnir replied to Sheeta's topic in Book Search and Reading Recommendations
The moment you mention elves, I start thinking of the Inheritance cycle (i.e. Eragon) - have you tried that? Perhaps you're looking for something more "adult" and if so, I have to say A Song of Ice and Fire... unfortunately, they're like 800-1000 pages EACH. There have only been 4(5?) books published so far though, and if you're interested in dragons, old kingdoms, royalty and general awesome fantasy, you won't regret checking it out! I saw you talking about His Dark Materials before as well and I just wanted to say that the second and the third book in these series are much better than the first (in my opinion). It may have spoiled the first one a bit that I saw the movie beforehand but anyway, you should check out the next two if you've only read the Northern Lights, like you said. -
Since this thread is about crushes, I must take advantage of the situation and ask who this guy is, I've seen him in more than one avatar here on BCF: You all seem very crushed on him - and I've no idea who he is.

What Pokemon Are You?

I am... Pikachu! I dunno about how accurate it is though, I don't "live" for friendship and I actually think I should learn to respect other people's opinions more... -
Well, I definitely love Running Up That Hill, the Placebo version.

If they're my own, yes. If they're something I borrowed at the library or exchange books you buy for school - it's pretty much unavoidable. They either all have broken spines by the time I get to them, or they will, soon enough. I can't stand the broken spine on the books on my shelf so I try to be careful with them when I read them. I also loan people my books if they're interested but I often ask them nicely to be careful and often I just take the paper cover off when I'm loaning it to my friends who don't mind, it's usually in the way anyway.

Hah, exactly! Out of all the things they did differently in that film, moving Brom's death scene around stood out for me. It was completely ridiculous.

What she said.

Depends on the mood entirely... What I'm interested in at that exact time. If I have books from the library or ones that someone else borrowed me, I usually try to be done with them first. I also try not to start two at a time - that way, they seldom both get finished. I lag behind on one until I've forgotten what I'd already read of it and then I may never finish it...
-
Thanks for that - I'll check it out when I have the time!

Unfinished books.. will you pick them up again?
Skírnir replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
I'm not sure what to say here. There have been books I got put off but I don't put them down with the intention of starting them again. I usually just give up on those forever... As for the books I have put down and meant to pick up again when I'm in the mood - I'm still convinced I will, at some point. Mostly because I didn't start them and eventually disliked the story, it's usually because I didn't have the time, got interested in another book at the same time or had to give the book back to the library or something... At least two books come to mind when I'm writing this...two that I mean to start again next summer. Firstly, The Lord of the Rings. I never got through the first book, I was 200 pages in when I became absorbed in something else. Same goes for A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin - truly great series, I just got a little lost on the way! -
Depends on what I'm reading. I usually prefer silence, a cup of coffee and the sofa - when no one's at home. Otherwise, I get comfortable in my bed. If I manage to get easily absorbed in the story, all other noise just fades away - the TV could be on and family members can be talking as well. I wouldn't hear it anyway.

Hmm, Arnaldur Indri

Today I've mainly been reading my history book for the upcoming exam. I did sneak a peek in the Colour of Magic while I was at it but hey - learning about the Vikings and their laws and ways is fun as well. I did fall for the temptation to go to the library recently. I borrowed the Kite Runner - something I've been wanting to check out for a while.

I saw Angels and Demons at the cinema and I found that I was counting the scenes and facts they changed throughout the film. I didn't expect it to be as good as the book but I always feel like I must see the films made after books I have read. There were several things. If I remember correctly, they changed the name of the girl's father and even though the former part of the movie was all right, everything started going downhill as I came back from the break. It was the same with the DaVinci Code really - they changed the ending completely and such. And if you want to discuss movies gone wrong - Eragon. For those who have seen it and read the book as well, you know what I'm talking about.

Nice list - and reviews! I actually bookmarked this page, you're officially my new favourite BCF-person! Love history as well.

5 random facts: 1. One of my very best friends is my older sister. Even though she's 11 years older than me and probably as different to me as a sibling could be. 2. My mom was working as a "housewife" until I was 14 years old. Therefore, I have never learned to use a washing machine and cooking porridge/boiling water is as far as my skills in the kitchen go. She even cleans my room if I leave it too long. (I never expect that of her or ask her to, though! Just so that's clear, I'm not completely spoilt. ) 3. It's my dream to get a university degree in either mathematics/physics or history. It's also been my dream to become a teacher since I was 7 years old. 4. I absolutely hate dressing up and going to parties or school festivals. I really only do it for my friends who nag me until I agree to go. I prefer small groups of friends at the cinema or dinner. 5. I'm extremely "nerdy" compared to all the other members of my family. They really do not share my need for knowing everything about anything that comes to mind. "Nerd" is almost becoming a nickname for me in the house, even though I'm not extremely smart at all.

Thanks piecefield. And I totally agree with this! They're not how I pictured them at all. Jasper also has a pretty awesome character in my head, the films do not portray him right at all.
