  1. ^^Haha well that's original. At least they're put to good use
  2. Haha, well not much to say really, we put meat in a jar, with some coke, and it disintegrated. It looked pretty ugly. Basically, that's what it does to your stomach. Only, there's also a sort of protection in the stomach, because of the mucus (it's not that simple but no one wants to go there), but still you can't really ignore the acidity. So...it can cause lots of things, starting with ulcers and gastritis...Of course, drinking it once in a while won't kill you, but you know, it sure won't help EDIT: oh, and about the tooth thing - obviously they won't disolve over night. Then all of the people drinking coke would be teethless. But when you add up all the effects of drinking coke (and coffe, and juice, and other stuff) it's bad for your teeth. One can of coke will not make your teeth fall out, but they will definitely be less stronger. And you can't regenerate your teeth. Believe me, it'll be easier for your teeth to go bad, and break, and fall out, and every tooth missing is less food chewed enough which can couse other digestive problems and subsequently affect your whole body and...Ok, got carried away. I'm really serious about this.
  3. ^^To tell you the truth, it took me a long time to read the book, when the shipwreck part started (I loved the first part), but I just wasn't in the mood for it at the moment. I wasn't in a reading mood at all actually. I didn't give up, and ended up loving it to the end. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy it should you try to give it another go
  4. In the spirit of my slow reading style, read a few more chapters of Kafka. I'm really enjoying it, cos it's one of those books that you don't only read, but you stop and think about every once in a while. I stopped worrying about it taking me so long to finish it, because it's more important to enjoy one book than to read tons in a short while. No matter how large your TBR list is

    Hi there

    ^^Thanks, I already am
  6. I use all kinds of things - peaces of paper, pencils, tickets, those sort of promotional bookmarks you find in bookshops (promoting new books), one I made out of a specific kind of paper I don't know how to name in english (), and a plastic one in the shape of a dog, which you can sort of ''clip on'' to the page. And I use the post it coloured ones only for uni books. Don't know why I don't like to use them for other books. Strange.
  7. Double posting, but I thought of how they're making a film based on this book, and I'm affraid it's not going to be good enough to do the book justice. It's just a specific story and I'm affraid it's going to be either boring or just not...touching enough. Or at all. Of course, I didn't think Cast Away (with Tom Hanks) could be very interesting, but I ended up loving it and rewatching it afterwards , so I could be wrong. Dunno.

    Hi there

Lovely bones is also on my TBR list Thanks for the tip, but I'm not sure whether I'll start such a thread or not because I don't think I'd have much to write in it (as far as reading diaries go xD ). I'd feel really lame seeing you guys read X-XY books a month, when I'd be lucky if I managed to read one Although in a ''members thread'' I could hide the embarasing lack of reading with other random posts. A member's thread might be the way to go
  9. No one's mentioned the acidity of Coke (diet or not), which is bad enough itself without the other toxic and cancerous ingredients. We once made a simple experiment with coke and meat...I'm sure nobody want's to know I've learned that etching is a synonime for erosion.
  10. Tried soy milk for the first time ever, and I like it I thought it was gonna smell strange, but turns out it doesn't Yay.
  11. I read a chapter of Kafka last night (as far as reading for fun goes). So far I've read about a 100 pages and am now convinced it will take me an entire century to finish it. Unless I organize my time better. *Sigh*
  12. ^^ I know how you feel. Good question. I'm affraid I haven't read many books by Japanese authors so I can't really answer it. But it could be. It does seem like they have a specific approach to emotions and expresing them which might seem colder to us folks from the West, but as I've said, I can't really judge. I'm sure we could find a lot of Europian authors who describe things such as feelings in such a mechanical/functional/non sensual/warm manner. The epoche of naturalism comes to mind

    Hi there

Oh yeah Actually, before I found this forum I used to write down the titles of books which I wanted to read on post its, which basically looked mental because I would write it down next to notes like ''buy xy,learn chapter yz,find out what xyz means'' and stuff like that. But now I'm being more sophisticated and am actually starting a proper list (I found a notebook which was once ment for that purpose-surprise surprise ). So far I've heard a lot about ''The book thief'' (both on and off the forum) so I put that one on the list.I have a bunch of others I'm considering adding to the list, but I want to read more about them here on the forum to decide (Running with scissors,The 5 people you meet in heaven to name a few). Would you like to suggest something else,or is that a bad idea for book lovers with lack of time and a growing TBR list ? I'm open for suggestions.
  14. I've read it a couple of years ago for school, and I thought it was good. Not one of my fav books though. His jokes and sarcasm are so direct,it seemed unusual for his time,or I dunno, just unusual.Or rather unexpected. But at least it's consistent.I did like how it was mental from begining to end, characters appearing and disappearing...

    Hi there

    Thanks
  16. I hope you'll enjoy it when (and if) you decide to read it.It's easy to read, and doesn't take long. I'm gonna try and get my hands on some of her other books during the summer,or whenever I get some free time. The plots sound interesting
  17. I highly recomend it,especially if you've already read something else by Paulo Coelho and enjoyed it It's an easy read, and I especially loved the ending The story is rather romantic imo.
  18. Interesting point there Andy and I agree about it being cold and all. But you know,I thought of how his characters often get aroused by...whatever.I remember how in ''Hard boiled wonderland...'' the main character is aroused by the ''slightly overweight'' girl, and then a bit later there's the scene with the library (LOL) girl.Which is definitely,as you've mentioned before, described very functionally. The actual process I mean. But why the arousement? Also can be found in Kafka...Just currious.
  19. ^^If you liked that one,I think you'd like The song reader even more But that might just be me.It does sound unusual,it is as far as the idea goes (a woman being a song reader, never heard of that before),but it's a pretty down to earth kind of story.Real people (well, not real real...you know what I mean ) dealing with life. I love the closeness of the sisters (the 2 main characters),and dunno why,but the story just...moved me.They seemed to get hurt so often (nothing like real life, right:roll:),but still managed to get on with life. I'm glad you liked OUaD I personally think that story is more unusual than TSR.
  20. ^^It's the same everywhere with uni books There's also a great policy in our library at uni, where you can only get books (get as in take them with you for more than a day) if there are ''enough copies available''.The required number, however, hasn't been defined xD So I go to the library and ask if they have the book I need, they say ''yes, but only for the reading room'', and I can see they have at least 5 copies left Wohow.Thank God for public libraries.
  21. Bright colours Day or night
  22. I mostly use the library, and buy books only once in a while. University books are expensive dammit, gotta save your money for them But I don't mind. I find most of the books I'm looking for in the library (for free. ok,not completely free because of the fee you need to pay for the membership, but still - cheap), and if I can't find sth there and think I really need to read it, then I buy it.
  23. My thoughts exactly. What's so great about it? Even if it was wow at the time it got published (and I'm pretty sure it wasn't) by now there have been tons of other ''rebelious'' stories written. I just don't get it.
  24. Read 3 more chapters of Kafka. It's getting even better
  25. I haven't finished that one either But I have it at home,so I'm hoping to finish it someday... Anyway,I sometimes start reading a book and don't finish it for random reasons (lack of time, interest, too many books to choose from and I can't decide which one I want to read....), but mostly I pick it up again some time later and finish it eventually.Depending on how well I remember what I've read, sometimes I start all over again, and sometimes I just pick up where I stopped. You can't always be in the mood for anything/everything, so...why waste precious reading time
