Happy New Year, Devi - enjoy your reading in 2014
-
Happy reading in 2014, Claire!
Like you, I'm trying not to plan too much this year - although that's probably a plan in and of itself, in which case: I have a plan!
-
Some brilliant books in your TBR lists, bobbly - have a brilliant 2014!
I read Dune and all the various sequels as a teenager - though devoured is probably a better word than read - those books really stay with you.
I love the first one - it's one of my all-time faves
-
Happy reading in 2014, Sari
-
Thanks all!
Hope you have a good year of reading in 2014, Steve. I may not post in here often, but it's a very entertaining thread to read, and you never know, one day I might be brave enough to try another of the books you rate highly. I'm still planning to read more of the Jim Butcher Dresden Files series after enjoying reading the first one on your recommendation.
You know you're always welcome, Claire
I hope you get to read some more Dresden - it is true, they get better and better as they go along
Best Wishes for 2014 !
Your TBR looks very tackleable, but what would I know.
It's probably tackleable if I don't buy anymore books this year. Oh, wait, that's only another 8.5 hours, I think I can manage that
-
Hang on, have you got a time machine??
It's not 2014 yet
Glad you enjoyed Good Omens
-
I haven't bought any Jules Verne's though so phew!!
Oh but you might like him, cos you love vintage science fiction
I feel a bit bad, cos I got that big hardback with seven of his novels in it last Christmas, but there you go. It still looks nice on the shelf
-
Thanks all
Be aimless .. that's the key
Oh that's alright then, I'm good at being aimless
-
As I'm not going to finish another book this year I guess this thread is drawing to a close. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to read my waffle, or just for a chat, or even to point and laugh (
), it wouldn't be the same without you
A few stats to finish things off:
I finished 77 books in 2013, 19 of which were ebooks, and I didn't give up on any!
I gave eight books 10 out of 10. They were:
The Iliad - translated by Robert Fagles
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
The Coldest War by Ian Tregillis
Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie
A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge
Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel
A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge
Red Country by Joe Abercrombie
My average score for the year was 7.6
My favourite book of the year, bar none, was Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel
As for the rest . . .
My favourite science fiction book of the year was a re-read - A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge
My favourite fantasy book of the year was by Joe Abercrombie, but don't ask me to choose between Best Served Cold and Red Country (they had the best covers, too)
My favourite character of the year was Gretel from Ian Tregillis's brilliant 'Milkweed Tryptich'
My funniest read of the year was Ready Player One
My most read author in 2013 was Vernor Vinge (five books)
My favourite discovery of 2013 was Blood Song by Anthony Ryan
My favourite series of 2013 was between Patrick O'Brian's 'Aubrey/Maturin' and Bernard Cornwell's 'Warrior/Saxon Chronicles' - can't decide, they're both brilliant
My favourite classic was The Iliad (I read two epic poems in the end - and, before anyone says anything, I did read four or five classics this year
)
The book I was surprised I liked as much as I did was East of Eden by John Steinbeck
My biggest disappointment of the year was finding that I don't like Jules Verne much at all
My lowest score of the year was 2, which means my least favourite book was On Basilisk Station by David Weber
Thanks everyone, see you in 2014!

Enough with the lists already!
Welcome to my 2014 thread
I only set myself just the one target last year, which was to get Mount Doom (aka my TBR list) down to 50 (which I achieved for roughly 24 hours last week until Amazon started offering me books for 99p
). Somehow, though, I always end up trying to beat my previous year's total of books read. I didn't manage it in 2013, and I've decided not to try in 2014, as I think it makes me rush some books, particularly if I'm not enjoying them, and I end up enjoying them less as a result
So, no targets this year. I just want to read and enjoy as much as possible, and I hope everyone else does the same and has a brilliant, happy and healthy 2014
And we are open for business

Happy reading in 2014, Kay
-
I probably could, but I wouldn't mind reading it again. I did enjoy it a lot the first time around, and I like re-reading books as you pick up so much more the second time around. Besides, I bought a Kindle copy even though I own the paper-back, so I may as well read it again as I bought it again.
I'd be interested to know what the Kindle versions are like - they'd be much easier to deal with
-
Best get on with them if that TBR pile is ever gonna come down
They're not on my TBR cos I haven't bought them yet
-
Book # 110 Ghost Story by Jim Butcher TBR - 736
Synopsis far too spoilery.
I liked the Dresden Files TV show and wanted to try the books ; I found #13 in a charity shop, so gave it a go.
I can say nothing about the plot, `cos it`s such a big spoiler. What I can say is that I loved the book - it`s a real page tuner, it`s funny, it`s touching, the last 100 pages or so have a real `wow!` feeling to them, and there`s a line towards the end that knocked my socks off.
Ooh, so I've only got another seven of the series to read till I get to that bit, then
Do you think you'll go back and get the others now?
-
Just got home from watching Catching Fire with my 12 year old daughter. We both thoroughly enjoyed it, more than the first film. Looking forward to the final instalment next year!
I thought they were turning the third book into two films?
I started watching Django Unchained last night. Got about 40 mins into it. Haven't decided whether I want to watch the rest of it or not.
-
How many more you got?
I haven't read any since January, so next up is number 7
-
Meh, that could be a while. I kind of get the feeling he's going to do a GRRM.
Spend more time writing blurb for other people's books than writing his own?
-
You're so contrary!
Hang on, you liked it, Tim didn't, I haven't read it, and I'm the contrary one?
(Did it work? Will you read it??
)
Yes I will, when there's a date for the release of the third one

But . . . But . . . But it's Replay!
Mind you, I suppose, being Replay, if you wanted to read it again you should really buy it again
And then give it to Kay again
And then buy it again
Etc, ad infinitum
