  1. I thought the book of The Shining was far, far better than the film (which was good too!); to me, it's one of Stephen King's best books.
  2. I have that on my shelf to read, look forward to hearing what you think of it, Brian
  3. I bought Phantom the other day and am really looking forward to it, too I have been a big Stephen King fan over the years but had gone off his stuff for a while, but I really liked 11/22/53 as well
  4. Across The Universe sounds really good, Chrissy; is it noticeably YA, or an enjoyable read for all would you say?
  5. Hope you enjoy it when you finally get it, chaliepud You're very welcome, julie, thank you too I hope you like The House on the Strand, it is a bit different to her other books due to the subject matter, but just as well written and enjoyable I think

  7. The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier Synopsis - from Amazon Dick Young is lent a house in Cornwall by his friend Professor Magnus Lane. During his stay he agrees to serve as a guinea pig for a new drug that Magnus has discovered in his biochemical researches. The effect of this drug is to transport Dick from the house at Kilmarth to the Cornwall of the 14th century. There, in the manor of Tywardreath, the domain of Sir Henry Champernoune, he witnesses intrigue, adultery and murder. As his time travelling increases, Dick resents more and more the days he must spend in the modern world, longing ever more fervently to get back into his world of centuries before . . This was one of my favourite books when I was a teenager and I was a bit nervous about reading it again in case I just didn't enjoy it as much. However, I needn't have worried, as I loved it! It has historical romance and political intrigue mixed in with time travel and 1960s England, and I found it a thoroughly gripping read. It is the first book this year that I have found hard to put down and really looked forward to getting back to.
  8. Looks like I thought some of it was a bit dry, too! Found my review: "Two contemporary academics discover a mystery involving two Victorian poets, and this book unravels the mystery by intertwining the present-day stories with those from the past. The writing is beautiful and brings both past and present to life, and I became more and more involved in the book as it went on, until I reached the ending in tears. As I had expected this book to be a bit dry, that came as something of a surprise to me! The book includes the correspondence between the two Victorian poets, as well as their (sometimes very long) poems, and I can applaud the writer's skill in bringing such true voices to her characters. However, to me, I actually found these hard going to read and would have enjoyed the book more without them - when I come to reread it, I will just skim over the letters, and probably not read the poems at all. Overall, though, a lovely book and a greatly enjoyable read. "
  9. Oh, yes, that is the one I have frankie - I think it is probably the most beautiful book I own! (kindle? pah!)
  10. While you are waiting for poppyshake's thoughts, I will just tell you that Possession is one of my favourite books of all time, I absolutely loved it. I also enjoyed The Name of the Rose very much indeed!
  11. The House on the Strand was one of my favourite books in my teens and I read it several times so was a bit wary of reading it again in case it didn't live up to my memories, but I'm enjoying it just as much this time around. It's unusual for du Maurier in that it involves time travel, but I think it's a great book. I read quite a few of hers over the last couple of years and enjoyed them all (some more than others, of course!). I am looking forward to reading Rebecca, as I thought I had read it, but actually think I have just seen the film many times! I will look forward to hearing which of her books you choose next time.
  12. Ow! Ow!! Ow!!! I'm not sure what hurts most, being physically pulled apart or thinking of putting down my book and picking up the kindle But, oh? Adjustable print size? Now, that sounds good ...
  13. Has anyone read the Xeelee books by Stephen Baxter? I have read Moonseed by him and liked it, and am in the mood to try some more SF this year.
  14. I'm over half way through I Capture the Castle and am enjoying it, but because I can only manage to read up to about 20 pages of it at one time, it has relegated to second place in popularity - first is the paperback I have started, The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier.
