  1. Nice!! one of my favourite books last year. I managed to pick up a few books in the library Lee Child - Bad Luck and Trouble as well as buying another from Waterstones The Hard Way ( I know I am obsessed ) also picked up a batman graphic novel and a new to me Scandinavian crime writer Camilla Lackbergs - The Ice Princess. I still have my Chine Mieville to read and a new audio book which I can't remember what it is as its still in the car
  2. Glad you're enjoying it I read it last year and am a big fan of Mieville currently I am trying to read Iron Council, have you read any of his other books?

  5. I started reading Even - David Trevellyan and admittedly I have only just started I just hope it gets better so far he seems to have taken a Lee Child book (the reason I picked it because I thought it might be on a similar vein) and converted the 'hero' into an English black ops guy who has been framed for a murder and been picked up by the NYPD and FBI the brits have turned theor back on him and he is going to have to solve it on his own...now this I got from the first 20 pages and my heart is rapidly sinking, this is Jack Reacher and someone has simply changed the name and nationality and its not even a good imitation of him. well I will continue but if it doesn't improve I will be returning it to the library tommorow. I have also started Barbara Nadel - A Chemical Prison I am very fond of this series of books so I will continue with this one and it will hopefuly be as good as her others. I am saving my continuation of Iron Council - Chine Mieville until I have no distractions as it requires my complete concentration
  6. I have just finished a re-read of the Watch series this year and am so looking forward to Snuff Vimes is my hero
  7. Since I bought one for my dad he gives me daily updates on the % he has read of his book still I am glad he is enjoying it
  8. 27. Don't Tell - Karen Rose I did enjoy this book but I wasn't overwhelmed with enthusiasm partly because I had read a book years ago which had a virtually identical plot line to the extent the abuser was the husband and in law enforcment there was a period of hiding and finding. But my main gripe and its a big one is the relationship the main protagonist Caroline Stewart/Mary Grace Winters starts with Max it happens over the space of days that she after years of not trusting and hiding from men manages to fall in love or at least have feelings for a complete stranger who is her boss. Don't get me wrong I will try some more of her books but it might not be my first choice unless they have a different plot line.
  9. Baked potato, 3 bean salad (home made) and salad.
  10. I have watched most of it unfortunately am gonna have to catch up on the last half hour on Iplayer as I was distracted. I love it when BBC 4 do this kind of thing only wish they did it more often.
  11. lol....I worked my way through Focaults Pendulum and liked that but thats because I had an obsession with numbers for a while. Never been tempted to try any of his others
  12. I finished Don't Tell - Karen Rose this evening I did enjoy it although parts of it were a little far fetched.
  13. I only managed one of Barker's books years and years ago (probably about 20 ) Weaveworld but I know someone on here recently read Cabal. I would say these were more horror based fantasy to my recollection but really not sure. I can't remember who just read it will have a look around the forum when I get a mo and see if I can track it down as they also did a review of it.
  14. I remembered a few more when I looked at my bookshelves last night Philip Pullman Diana Wynne Jones Clive Barker Simon R Green all very different styles happy reading (oh and studying )
  15. For Classic you have contemporary and friend of Tolkien, C S Lewis Also China Mieville he certainly has played around with the genre I will try to think of some others as well, in fact there are similarities between Gaimans Neverwhere and one of China Mieville YA books called UnLundun.
  16. just said goodbye to one of my best friends feel a little deflated :-(

  17. I hope you enjoy it I finished at the end of last year and thought it was really good Started Don't Tell - Karen Rose only part of the way through and although goo I am reserving judgement as I am sure I have read a storyt very similar to this in the past.
  18. I think you need to have a dad who does a great eyeore impression which he still does on occasion and I am 38
  19. If you know prehistory its a must not I did read the first 3 years and years ago but since then never really bothered and probably won't with this one. I did love them but just no longer my cup of tea.
  20. I think its The Island of the day before - Umberto Eco as its actually mine I inherited a few of my grandad's but they stricly speaking weren't my buys. I have tried to read this on a number of occasions but never got through it, shame really its a lovely looking book, hard backed beautiful picture on the front.
  21. I finished Gone Tommorow - Lee Child when I got in this evening. Its my last unless I go online and order a few more ...Oh the temptation
  22. Nice! I love this series shame its on so late though
  23. Yeah me too and none of this staying in cheap places and buying crappy clothes all the time, I guess I was not cut out for the lone hero material...Almost finished Gone Tommorow its quite good avtually ok yeah there are a lot of reaches in terms of the plot and the Afghan connection but its quite enjoyable and for once you ahve a proper female baddie.
  24. 26. - The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Graphic Novel. This was the best of the graphic novels I have read recently to my mind it was by far the most traditional. I have to say I was only familiar with the characters from the 2003 film although obviously most of them appear in books but here they are heroes or anti heroes really fighting a mysterious enemy. The quality of the graphics was great much more what I would associate with this type of book, I liked all the little details and will probably go back at read it from the begining again to pick up more of these as you miss some for the sake of the continuity of the plot. There was a bizarre story at the end of the graphic section primarily about Allan Quatermaine which ended with the start of the main graphic novel and how he got into his opening sequence, it didn't really give him any back story but it was interesting although the type print was so small it was hard to read and the author had obviously decided that because there were only 1-2 accompnying graphics that everything needed to be described to the nnth degree. Overall though I liked it and will continue with my education into this genre. I am part of the way through Gone Tommorow - Lee Child to continue with my Jack Reacher Obsession and started Chine Mieville - Iron Council last night as well although I know this will be a slow read, you really need to be completely isolated and concentrating to read any of his non YA books.
  25. I went and looked it up as I knew I had read in one of them how he got his money he has an account with a bank but no ATM at least in the early books he has money wired to a local branch and he picks it up he has to use a password to get it...this is in Without Fail by Gone Tommorow he has an ATM but these are set post 9/11...he also carries around his old passport in this later one. His money source I guess is old army pension and the sale of the house mentioned in book Tripwire I am a positive mine of all things Reacher now
