  1. Yeah, I've boy soldier isn't bad, anyone have any other books or magazines that may be worth reading to my kids? I'm looking for shorter colorful kids books that they can easily understand.
  2. I've read quite a few books to my kids, do you have any young kids? What sort of books do you read them before bed?
  3. It can be quite difficult to find the right books for kids, what do you guys think are worth getting for my kids? they're a bit younger then 11 and i want to get them into reading!
  4. I agree, I'm trying to instill a good relationship between my kids and books early on so they don't end up missing out on that beautiful feeling of curling up in front of the fire with a good book! What do you think is a good way to keep kids into books?
  5. I love reading my kids books before they go to bed so they can grow up to have that same feeling of nostalgia, any books you may suggest??
  6. I started reading the series when my husband bought it for me from the airport. So addictive!
  7. Ok, I saw the bit where the doctor quickly turned off the screen in the TARDIS at the beginning of ep 1...guess I literally blinked and missed a clue! Follow-up: I didn't actually see what was on the screen itself, but one of my kids pointed out something strange
  8. fantastic read, well worth the read and a pretty good time filler on the train to work!! looking forward to my kids growing up a bit and me passing it on to them. Inspirational coming of age novel.
  9. My favourite moment was at the beginnning "ooh, this fell out of her pocket when i accidentally bumped into her. Took me four goes!" btw what is the meaning of the crack at the end...I know about the crack in the wall from the first ep. I guess it's eluding to the big bad of this season?
  10. I was actually thinking about my childhood book whilst reading StoryBox and seeing all the bunnies hopping about. I loved the Beatrix Potter stories because of the beautiful illustrations and the fantastical short stories; I especially loved Peter Rabbit and Miss Tiggywinkle! . I also remember loving Ted Hughes The Iron Man, it was probably the scariest story I read when I was a child and I can't remember why!
  11. I stopped reading magazines because of the Internet. However, magazines such as BBC Wildlife feature great spreads with high resolution photographs (advantage over internet). For TV gossip and film news & reviews, I just go online. I do like buying New Scientist every once and a while when the front cover catches my eye
  12. In episode 2 we'll truly get to see Matt Smith's take on the Doctor...coming out of regeneration the new Doctor always channels the last Doctor i.e. "I'm still cooking!" One of the big criticisms is that Matt Smith's Doctor is too much like David Tennant, so I'll be interested in hearing what they think of Matt after a few more eps! Can't wait to see more of the TARDIS...it's so big that an episode could take place there. If I'm not mistaken, the old Dr. Who shows had some TARDIS eps?
  13. I think books are a much more cerebal experience than watching movies...I think that I sometimes read a book and save it into my short-term memory! As with everybody else, I never forget the throughline and plot threads of a book...they are major developments!
  14. I'm liking the new Dr Who. Sad David Tennant is gone but there is a real freshness to this show. Not just because of new Doctor and Assistant either! I like the shows new and fresh direction. From the previews I think the budget is bigger! The doctor feels like a cross between Jack Sparrow and David Tennant . I hope the show keeps its pulply fiction style some of my fav episodes of past Dr. Who were stand alone stories
  15. It's funny because my kids read a story in this month's AdventureBox Books about a boy who can go to the funfair after he finishes his chores. But the mower won’t get started, luckily Jake finds a leaflet full of phone numbers of superheroes that might just save the day. I thought of Captain Underpants when reading that story! I love superheroes especially when they use their power to save education!
  16. Agreed! I can't wait for it to come out next year! A series I really want to see made is 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' by Haruki Murakami
  17. I saw this on YouTube recently, it's a really cool poem brought to life in video form: My First Day at School by Roger McGough
  18. Has anybody got their hands on Ian McEwan's latest book 'Solar' yet?
  19. I like to use the receipt of the book I'm reading, I find a sentimental value in them because they are very personal to the book and can remind me where and when I bought the book. Also I just hate throwing away receipts
  20. I bet the book was a social commentary and time capsule for the hearts and minds of people in 1949 (1st publication). All the privacy concerns and governmental control issues in the book are now here in some form or another. Of course I'm no history buff, what does everyone else think?
  21. I haven't seen this Google advert on UK TV but I love it!
  22. Not sure about when the repeats are but the Sky Arts Homepage features some snippets from the show: http://thebookshow.skyarts.co.uk/ now I'm interested in Ian McEwan's Solar...the author knows his stuff!
  23. I watched the Book Club and found the show entertaining, I agree that it's a bit light, the show only made me get one of the books. But it talks about books I might have a chance of knowing and eventually loving! It great to see that Books shows are boosting sale of books which are spotlighted in the show: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2010/mar/25/tv-book-club-gok-wan
  24. Hi, Has anyone ever watched a TV programme discussing books (like a reading circle). what are your thoughts on these type of shows? The Book Club on channel 4 has just wrapped up and whilst I admit that I have not been reading the books under discussion, I found it very interesting to hear Gok Wan's thoughts on popular books! There's a new show on Sky Arts called the Book Show that begins tonight, apparently Stephen Fry may get some air time! Would love to hear his thoughts! http://thebookshow.skyarts.co.uk/homepage/447478/the_book_show_is_back.html
  25. Hi, Can anyone remember a scary kids book, I think it had a lot of pictures. Basically I think it describes things that would scare kids at night time. Two particular monsters I can remember include a green slime monster that hides under the bed and grabs the ankles of little children at bed time if they step out of their beds! The other monster was a mound on coats that when piled together on the floor it became a coat monster that grabbed kids! This book was scary for kids but also a good educational tool for parenting. I think the book was published in the early 1990's, Any help would be great, Thanks!
