  1. Sorry bulldog, I would love to be able to help but it didn't ring any bells for me. I am in the same position as you, I read loads of great 50s an 60s scifi when I was a teen and can't remember any of the titles or authors. One I did remember was Brit author Leonard Daventry. Wrote a handful of novels now forgotten. But worth a look up! Good luck with your search.
  2. Hi Julie, sorry to go on about the health thing again, but it does seem that US docs will offer some strange things (like the botox) that seem just about getting money rather than any true health benefit. One thing about our health service, everything is cut to the bone so you only get offered what you REALLY need , although things have got a bit iffy. I had no idea old Truman was gay, or that he was little with a squeaky voice.
  3. Hi Julie, sorry to hear about the knee and the kidnies and the asthma med let down. That's terrible. I don't know how you cope but I guess it is just a case of having no choice. Nice review of Truman Capote.
  4. Hi Julie yes the same author. She has a very irreverent style. STIFF was ok but Packing For Mars was much better. Lots of fun and trivial information. OK I have finished both Fasting , Feasting and Sightlines. I could not help myself, I started reading one from next years TBR pile, Anna Dressed In Blood. I have a few left from my "old" TBR pile but none of them jumped out at me. If I don't get them finished this year I will just carry them over.
  5. Interesting will check this out out on Amazon thanks Steve
  6. Hi Julie glad you are still about. Going back to have a good read of your reviews now.
  7. Hi Kylie, sounds like a good day. You probably needed that pie just to give you the strength to carry that load of books. The only book from your haul I have read is Concrete Island, which was very good and is sort of an allegory too.
  8. Laptop has been broken so have got quite a lot of reading done...devoured and enjoyed Packing For Mars by Mary Roach, now reading Sightlines which was a kindle book of the day a couple of weeks ago, also reading Fasting, Feasting by Anita Desai at the same time.
  9. Had a bit of a Mitford Marathon last night after the kids went to sleep so that is done and dusted, hurrah! Going to review it now in my Genre Challenge section.
  10. Hi bobblybear yes it was a bit dear but I was getting desperate to fulfil my Genre Challenge. I am sure the price will come down presently. About the length, on my kindle with fairly small font size it goes 313 pages I just checked. Maybe it just seemed a short book to me as it was a one-day read
  11. Bashed on with the Mitford book . On the last 1/5th of the book now.
  12. This Is Me Jack Vance! Sorry to say, but I am so glad that I bought this as a kindle book for £2.99 (albeit devoid of any photographs) rather than lashing out pounds on getting the book itself from America. Jack Vance had a very interesting life without too much unhappiness, it seems like he had a good happy marriage and was close to his son and his mum. He also travelled widely and lived in a lot of different places. But he skims through the most important events which left me a bit frustrated. For instance, about meeting his wife Norma he deals with that in one sentence, something like " I liked her and she liked me so we got married" (I am paraphrasing from memory). About his marvelous books he says almost nothing at all. I had been prewarned about that by other reviews but I was still surprised by the paucity of information offered. It is also a very short book. My all time favourite author, but not the best autobiography I have ever read.
  13. Wonder R J Palacio This is basically a feel-good book. It is about a little boy, August who has a seriously deformed face , who has been protected from the reactions of the outside world by his family. But now he is seven years old and it is time for him to go to school and be with other children his own age. The book is about his first year and how it changes him and how he changes others. I liked this book although I did find it a bit overly sentimental at times. Also the seven year olds seem to speak and think in much more older ways than I considered realistic, but then again a book written in a seven year old's vocabulary would not be a good read. If this had been a film I probably would not watch it because the thick treacle would be unbearable. I liked the author's method of having different people as well as August telling their viewpoints. For instance his elder sister's take on things was a much needed balance. It was a short book and an easy read.
  14. I have watched several last week, some with the kids.... Men In Black Men In Black II just to catch up. Never really liked this one though. Men In Black III. I enjoyed this but Tommy Lee Jones looked shockingly old and ill ! Angel's Share Fantastic low budget Scottish film about a group of misfits on community service. Beaten down by their harsh Glasgow upbringing, one of them wants to make good and have a new start but his only way out is through one audacious caper..5 stars!! Perfume..I have seen this once before and watched it again with my 14 and 16 year old..they were rivetted by it and really got into the character. Leon. good old Jean Reno fun. Watching this again it was obvious that Natalie Portman was going to be a good actress even at that young age. Friends with Kids. This one from the director of Bridesmaids ( which I found to be surprisingly quite deep, a cut above most chick flicks) and with a few of the same people in it. This one again was a satisfying film, an interesting situation and not at all fluffy. It made me think about my own impossible situation so I wouldn't say I found it funny , but a good film which didn't shy away from any issues.
  15. That was very funny bree
  16. I have Rivers Of London to read so am looking forward too it even more now.
  17. Great title Pixie !
  18. I guess I like Deborah the best as she seemed the most unaffected by politics and the least nutty.
  19. Got all my books and DVD I was waiting for in the post today. My reading plan for next year is taking shape, but it is a little too early to talk about it yet. Suffice to say, what with the paperbacks I have carefully selected from charity shops and stuff waiting patiently on my kindle I have enough for next year already. (around 80 + books) Read 40 pages of the Mitford sisters today. Unity has died and also their brother Tom, the only son.
  20. Finished the Jack Vance book last night then read Wonder all in one day, which is one of my Genre Challenge books . Will do some reviews on Saturday. Will read a chunk of the Mitford sisters tomorrow. Also want to return to the book Diane sent me although it is getting a bit menacing where I last left it.
  21. Thanks for putting your thoughts Easy Reader! Hmm another positive review!
  22. I am 1/5 of the way through Letters Between Six Sisters but I am having to put it down and do lighter reads in between. Nearly finished This is Me! Jack Vance . (autobiography). November may be a decent month but no matter I will smash my target of 72 books for the year no problem
  23. I saw Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I thought it was OK, bit of no-brainer entertainment. The only bit that niggled me was once again we have bad vampires and a "good" vampire. I do think that concept is very silly. Once you become a vampire you are undead; you lose your human soul and any sense of right or wrong; you only care where your next feed is coming from.
